Iroquois Chiefs End Playoff Run

The Varsity Chiefs played three games this past week. The final two playoff games were against Starpoint in back to back meetings on Friday and Saturday night. The final local game of the season was on Monday. Both of the Starpoint games were highly physical, littered with penalties, and non-stop action. The Chiefs finished their playoff run with a 3-1 win on Friday and lost 7-1 on Saturday.

Friday’s game brought a strong defensive battle from the Chiefs, and enough offense to secure the win. Steve Kaufmann provided the offense with 2 goals and an assist with Ryan Marshall adding the third. Strong defensive performances were shown by Richard Karalus, Andrew Wilson and Aiden Abraszek in the 3rd period to minimize a Starpoint comeback. Maverick Blachowicz was stellar in net making many point blank saves throughout the game to keep the Chiefs in the lead.

Saturday brought a 7-1 loss to the Chiefs who couldn’t pull out the win. The lone goal of the night was scored by Mark Morganti off an assist by Kaufmann.

The Chiefs played their last game before their state tournament on Monday night versus Southwest/Maplegrove. The Chiefs came out with a poor start going down 3-0 early before Aiden Abraszek netted the first goal to cut the deficit to two. Andrew Wilson added the second to bring the Chiefs within one but Southwest would add a late second period goal to lead 4-2 after two periods. Southwest would add a 5th early in the 3rd, but then goalie Rob Bauer shut the door for good. Richard Karalus scored the 3rd Chiefs goal on the power play, assisted by AJ Takac and Aiden Abraszek. A minute later Iroquois struck again, making the score 5-4 on a goal by Abraszek assisted by Ryan Marshall. Andrew Wilson tied the game off assists by Marshall and Abraszek. The two teams headed to overtime tied at 5, where Mark Morganti netted the game winner, off an assist by Aiden Abraszek, taking the game 6-5.

Kingston Voyageurs 6, Buffalo Jr. Sabres 5 – Shootout

AMHERST, NY – Cole Bolton scored the winning goal in the shootout to lift the visiting Kingston Voyageurs over the Buffalo Jr. Sabres, 6-5, at the Northtown Center at Amherst on Monday evening.

Nolan Sheeran evened the score 6:47 into the second period, but then Alex Tonge scored twice to put Kingston up, 4-2. Buffalo’s Pat Egan scored his 30th goal of the season late in the second period to cut the lead to 4-3.

Buffalo tied the game just under two and a half minutes into the third period on Ben Casale’s goal. Brett Seney put the Voyageurs back in front, 5-4, halfway through the third period. Then, with a power play awarded to Buffalo and Jr. Sabres goalie Joseph Pianta pulled in favor of an extra skater, Michael Ederer fired a low shot from the point that found its way through traffic and evened the score.

Overtime could not determine a winner. In the shootout, Ederer scored Buffalo’s only goal. Tonge succeeded on his shot before Bolton put in his winner.

Pianta made 34 saves for Buffalo (29 wins, 14 losses, 3 OT losses, 3 shootout losses) while Brooks-Potts made 40 stops for the Voyageurs (38 wins, 11 losses, 1 OT loss, 2 shootout losses).

Raiders Remain Ranked at #19

Men’s Hockey Faces Road Test at Princeton & #5 Quinnipiac This Weekend

HAMILTON – The Raiders settled for two ties against Rensselaer and third-ranked Union this past weekend and has remained in the USCHO National Poll at No. 19.

Colgate (14-11-5, 10-5-3 ECAC) is ranked for two weeks in a row for the first time this season and clinched a home-ice series in the upcoming ECAC Hockey Tournament in March. The home series has yet to be determined if it will be a first round or quarterfinal matchup. If Colgate finishes in the top-four of the league the Raiders receive a first-round bye and hosts a quarterfinal series.

The Raiders are one of five teams in the league that are in the top-20 this week. Colgate is also receiving votes in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine National Poll.

The Raiders sit in the third spot in the league standings with 23 points and are three points clear of Cornell and Clarkson.  They are unbeaten in their last three games after the two ties this weekend and 7-2-3 since the start of 2014. Colgate has averaged 3.3 goals per game since the beginning of the new year. The power play has improved at a 26.2 percent success rate with 16 goals in 61 chances.

The penalty kill has been a strength as of late, allowing only seven power play goals in the last 50 opponent chances. The Raiders have not allowed a goal on the kill in the last five games and the streak is up to 22-straight penalty kills without allowing a goal.

The Raiders are back on the road this weekend to face Princeton and No. 5 Quinnipiac. The Bobcats are two points ahead of Colgate in the standings for second place. Colgate split the weekend series with these two schools earlier in the year with a win over the Tigers and a loss to Quinnipiac.

Ott Recognized by ECAC

Ott wins seventh rookie award, Amanda Lucky to honor roll

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Another strong week earned SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey
player Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Rochester Edge) her seventh ECAC West
Rookie of the Week award in 14 weeks, while teammate Amanda Lucky (Kanata,
Ontario/Clarkson University) was named to the honor roll.

Ott was clutch again for Potsdam with two goals and two assists. The
freshman scored a goal in Potsdam’s 4-3 overtime loss to Canton on
Saturday and then notched the game-winner on the power play to go along
with two assists in the Bears’ 5-2 win at Canton on Sunday. The two goals
gave her the program’s single-season record of 19, topping Bears’ all-time
leading scorer Annmarie Lewis’ 2012 mark of 17.

Ott is second on the team in scoring with 30 points on 19 goals and 11
assists. The forward ranks eighth in the nation in scoring (1.36 ppg)
overall and second among rookies. She’s third in overall goals-per-game
(0.86), second in the NCAA in power-play goals (9) and fourth in
game-winning goals (4).

Lucky broke out with seven points against the Kangaroos last weekend. The
senior recorded a goal and an assist in Potsdam’s overtime loss on
Saturday. She then exploded for a hat trick and two assists in the Bears
5-2 win at Canton on Sunday. The five-point day marked a personal best for
the senior assistant captain.

Lucky is third on the team in scoring with 11 goals and 14 assists for 25
points. She has amassed 43 points (17g, 26a) for Potsdam in less than two
seasons in a Bears jersey.

Potsdam has matched its single-season bests for overall and conference
wins at 12-8-3 and 7-4-3. The team has clinched its fourth playoff spot in
five seasons. The Bears are currently in fourth place with two games
against Utica to play. A Plattsburgh sweep of Oswego combined with a
Potsdam sweep of Utica would give the Bears the third seed and a home
playoff game on March 1. A split with Utica would give the Bears fourth
place and bring the Pioneers to Maxcy Ice Arena for the playoffs. A tie
and a loss or two losses to Utica would put Potsdam in fifth place and
send the Bears back to the Utica Auditorium for the playoff matchup.

Potsdam hosts Utica at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The Bears then head to Utica
for the regular season finale at 4 p.m. on Sunday.LuckyA_hs2013_color-2

The sophomore collected a goal and an assist in the 4-0 shutout on Saturday night and then dished out three assists on Sunday when the Lakers skated past the Nittany Lions 4-1.

Janiga has scored at least one point in four straight games and in nine of her last ten contests. She ranks second on the team in scoring with 38 points this season on 15 goals and 23 assists. She is among the top four in the league in all three categories.

The Lakers (21-7-3, 14-3-1 CHA) will entertain Lindenwood University (5-23-2, 5-12-1 CHA) this Friday and Saturday, February 21 and 22 to close out the regular season with Saturday’s contest serving as Senior Day at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. With Mercyhurst clinching the CHA regular season title, the Mercyhurst Ice Center will play host to the conference semifinals and championship for the second consecutive season. Those games will be held on Friday, March 7 and Saturday, March 8 at times to be determined

Elmira (17-4-1, 12-1 ECAC West) and Cortland (2-18-2, 1-11-1 ECAC West) will meet again in Cortland on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Cortland sophomore Laura Drew (Andover, MA/Canterbury School) scored her first goal of the season seven minutes, 42 seconds into the second period to give the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead. Her shot from a tough angle ricocheted off goalie Lisa Marshall’s (Powhatan, VA/Wayne St. Univ.) shoulder and off the cross bar before going in. Freshman Makenzie Wright (Burlington, ON/New Jersey Rockets) assisted on the goal for her first collegiate point.
Elmira tied the game with just 11 seconds left in the second when Brooke Wilgosh (Regina, SK/Notre Dame Hounds) scored off assists from Cassidy Delainey (Edmonton, AB/Edmonton Thunder) and Ashton Hogan (Shelburne, ONT/SUNY Plattsburgh). The Soaring Eagles then took the lead only 13 seconds into the third period when Tanis Lamoureux (Canton, MI/Victory Honda) scored off a feed from Erin Weston (Ajax, ON/Etobicoke Dolphins).
The game remained at 2-1 until Weston tallied with 8:40 remaining, assisted by Lamoureux and Ashley Ryan (Rochester/Rochester Edge). Lamoureux now has 99 career points (42 goals, 57 assists). Cortland freshman goalie Kelly Farinella (Marlton, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) made 27 saves, while Red Dragon senior forward Gina Tomei (Bronx/South Shore Warriors)won 11-of-16 faceoffs.

The Soaring Eagles added two goals in the last seven minute of the second period. Ashley Ryan scored with 6:44 left, just as a Cortland power play had expired, and Cassidy Delainey found the net on a power play with 1:39 remaining.

Potsdam’s Lucky Has Hat Trick

0

CANTON, N.Y.-Senior assistant captain Amanda Lucky (Kanata, Ontario/Clarkson University) scored three times and recorded two assists as the SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (12-8-3) downed SUNY Canton (8-14-3) 5-2 at the Roos House on Sundayafternoon. The victory ties the program’s single-season of best of 12 wins set in 2012. Bears senior forward Jessica Silviera (Brampton, Ontario/Brampton Thunder) and Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Rochester Edge) each had a goal and two assists to reach the 30-point plateau for the season.

The Kangaroos had the momentum early, aided by a Potsdam penalty. However, Canton didn’t score and Lucky drew first blood helpers from Silveira and Ott at 14:40. The Kangaroos outshot the Bears 9-8 in the most even period of game, but trailed 1-0 at the first intermission.

Canton tied the score just 56 seconds into the second period on the power play. Abbey Diabo centered a pass from behind Potsdam’s net that went off the skates off a Bears defender and into the net. Silveira got the Bears back in front 13 seconds later with assists from Lucky and Ott. After Potsdam killed off a Canton power play five minutes later, the Roos were called for four straight penalties and six of seven. Canton killed five, but Ott made them pay on the sixth with 32 seconds remaining in the middle period.

Lucky made it 4-1 51 seconds into the final period with assists from sophomore defenseman Katie Marsman (Wantagh, N.Y./Wyoming Seminary) and senior captain Brittany Lucky(Kanata, Ontario/Ottawa Senators). At 7:31, Karley Cree scored a shorthanded goal off a turnover at the Bears blue line to cut the gap to 4-2. Less than two minutes later, Lucky closed the scoring and completed the hat trick on an assist from Silveira to make it 5-2.

In goal, Potsdam sophomore Alexane Rodrigue (Monkland, Ontario/Bemidji State) made 20 saves for her 10th win of the season, improving on her own program record for single-season wins. Shayna Dominique made 34 stops for Canton.

The Bears outshot the Kangaroos 39-22 and were 1-7 on the power play to Canton’s 1-6.

Silveira has a slim 31 to 30-point team lead in scoring over Ott this season, just one point shy of Annmarie Lewis’ 2012 record of 32. Silveira now has 78 career points (34g, 44a) and needs eight more to pass Breanna Roy ’12 for second place on the program’s all-time scoring list.

Potsdam wraps up the regular season next weekend with a home-and-home series with Utica College. The Bears host the Pioneers on Senior Day next Saturday at 3 p.m. Potsdam then travels to the Aud in Utica the following afternoon of for a 4 p.m. contest. The Bears, currently in fourth place, have already clinched a playoff spot and could finish anywhere from third to fifth in the ECAC West.

Oswego Women Sweep Utica

0

Oswego, N.Y. – The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team completed the weekend sweep of Utica College with a gritty 2-1 win over the Pioneers on Sunday afternoon in the Campus Center Ice Arena. Oswego’s 2-0 weekend has large implications on ECAC West standings as the Lakers now sit four points ahead of Potsdam with one weekend left in the regular season.

The women currently sit in third place with 21 points as Plattsburgh and Elmira are in a tie for first with 26 points apiece.

Against the Pioneers on Sunday, Oswego was again powered by Melissa Seamont, as the senior scored both of the Lakers’ goals for the second-straight day. After scoring two shorthanded goals on Saturday to push Oswego past Utica on the Pioneers’ home ice, Seamont scored an even strength goal in the 14th minute of the first period to knot the score at 1-1 before nailing the game-winner on a power-play at 9:33 of the final period.

Seamont’s first goal at 14:30 of the first came on passes from fellow seniors Emma Smetaniuk and Olivia Boersen. The three classmates connected again for the game-winning goal as Oswego took advantage of Utica being whistled for elbowing just 56 seconds prior.

Nothing was more impressive than Bridget Smith‘s performance in net for the Lakers, especially the final 3.5 seconds. The junior stopped a shot that came with Utica breaking on a 2-on-1 situation after the Pioneers had pulled their goalie for the last minute. Utica would win a faceoff in Oswego’s zone and got two shots off in the final three ticks, with Smith turning the first away with her knee before stuffing a Pioneer attempt by the post as the buzzer sounded.

The goalie finished the day with 28 saves, earning the victory between the pipes for the second-straight day.

Oswego will return to action at 7 p.m. on Friday when No. 1 Plattsburgh comes to town for a two-game weekend series. The squads will face off against at 3 p.m. on Saturday for the regular season finale and Senior Day as Oswego will recognize its nine seniors after the contest.

Canisius Falls to Air Force

0

The Canisius College hockey couldn’t overcome a slow start in a 4-2 loss to Air Force on Saturday night. The Griffs are now 11-16-3 on the season and 10-10-3 in Atlantic Hockey play, while the Falcons improve to 18-10-4 and 13-7-3 against league foes.

“We had a positive response from a poor first period but the margin is very small this league and we couldn’t fully recover,” said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. “We got it to a one-goal game and were pushing when they got that late power-play goal. It kind of stung us and we weren’t able to find the equalizer.”

Senior Patrick Sullivan (Derby, N.Y.) and junior Cody Freeman (Toronto, Ontario)both scored goals for the Griffs.

Senior Tony Capobianco (Mississauga, Ontario) stopped 31 shots in net.

The Falcons controlled the contest in the first period, outshooting the Griffs by a 16-5 margin in the first 20 minutes of the contest. Air Force was able to take advantage when Adam McKenzie fired a shot into the back of the net through a screen from the blue line for the 1-0 lead with 3:06 remaining in the period.

Air Force then stretched its advantage to two with 12:26 remaining the second when A.J. Reid knocked a rebound in.

The Griffs responded from the sluggish start and pulled to within one when Sullivan scored his 10th goal of the season. Junior Doug Jessey (Langdon, Alberta) fired a shot toward net and the puck hit off Sullivan’s back and into the net for the 2-1 score. Sophomore Chris Rumble (Seattle, Wash.) also registered an assist on the goal with10:03 remaining in the second frame.

Canisius, however, was unable to pull any closer and the Falcons scored a pair of goals 77 seconds apart in the third frame to seal the victory. Chad Demers scored when wide open on a power play with 8:14 remaining in regulation and Ryan Timar then knocked in a rebound with 6:57 left for the 4-1 score.

Freeman cut the deficit to two with 4:42 remaining in regulation, connecting on the power play for his sixth goal of the season. Seniors Kyle Gibbons (Westlake, Ohio) and Ben Danford (Stillwater, Minn.) both registered assists on the extra-man tally but it was too late as Air Force earned the 4-2 win.

The Falcons finished the game with a 35-20 advantage in shots on the night. Both teams scored one power-play goal in four chances for Air Force and three for Canisius.

Jason Torf recorded 18 saves to earn the win in net for the Griffs.

Canisius continues Atlantic Hockey play next weekend with a two-game series against Robert Morris. The schools begin in Pittsburgh, Pa. on Friday at 7:05 p.m.

Sophomore forward Billy Pascalli (Deer Park, N.Y./New York Bobcats) roofed a backhand shot over Morrisville senior goalie John Azzano (Oshawa, Ontario/Wentworth) to tie the score just 42 seconds later. Senior forward Adam Place (Scarborough, Ontario/Bowmanville Eagles) and freshman forward Tommy Telesca (Selden, N.Y./New York Bobcats) assisted on the goal. Two minutes after that, sophomore forward Matt Thompson(Anchorage, Alaska/Kenai River Brown Bears) gave Potsdam its first lead on helpers from freshman forward Vinny Caligiuri(Shoreham, N.Y./Hartford Wolfpack) and Simon. The Bears outshot the Mustangs 13-7 in the first period.

At the 8:32, junior defenseman Max Fogel(Williamsville, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) scored on a shot from the point to give Potsdam the lead for good on assists from Caligiuri and freshman defenseman Nick Casacci (Ft. Junior forward Zach Blake(Campbellford, Ontario/Plattsburgh State) and Place assisted on the goal. With 5:30 left in the period, Potsdam was called for a five-minute contact-to-the-head major. The Bears killed the penalty and took the two-goal advantage into the break.

Just 54 seconds into the third period, Arnold picked up a loose puck into the neutral zone and ripped a shot between Azzano stick and side. The goalie got a piece of the puck, but it trickled over the line for a 5-2 lead. At 5:14, sophomore forward Zach Baker (Denver, Colo./Bozeman Ice Dogs) blasted a shot between Hall’s pads to get Morrisville back within 5-3. However, the Mustangs weren’t able to build momentum. Midway through the period, Morrisville was whistled for back-to-back penalties. Simon made the Mustangs pay with a power-play goal with 3:01remaining. Junior forward Trevor Cope (Swartz Creek, Mich./Atlanta Jr. Knights) set up the tally with a perfect pass across the slot. With a three-goal lead and time winding down the Bears were called for simultaneous minors, giving Morrisville a five-on-three power play for the last 1:28. With nothing to lose, the Mustangs pulled Azzano for an extra attacker. With 30 seconds left, junior defenseman Erick Ware (Huntsville, Ala./Kenai River Brown Bears) launched a shot from Potsdam’s defensive end and hit the empty-net on the far side of the rink for a 7-3 lead. Just 10 seconds later, sophomore forward Zach Bayer (Glendale, Ariz./Lindsay Muskies) answered on the power play to close the scoring at 7-4.

Union (20-6-4, 14-3-1 ECAC) saw four different skaters score goals with Vecchione recording a team-high two points.

The Raiders got off to a great start with two goals in a span of 1:13 early in the first frame. Goulakos gave Colgate the first lead with his eighth of the season on a nice stick handle in front of Stevens after he was left all alone on the right side of the ice. Black made it a quick 2-0 lead with his seventh of the year with a great feed from Tim Harrison. Wilson and Harrison battled along the boards and Harrison hit Black at the near post. The rookie put it inside the near post for the two-goal lead.

Union didn’t go away however and tied the game with two quick goals of its own.
