 Cortland led 1-0 late in the second period before nationally third-ranked Elmira scored the game’s final four goals to defeat the Red Dragons, 4-1, in an ECAC West matchup at Alumni Arena.
Elmira (17-4-1, 12-1 ECAC West) and Cortland (2-18-2, 1-11-1 ECAC West) will meet again in Cortland on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Cortland sophomore Laura Drew (Andover, MA/Canterbury School) scored her first goal of the season seven minutes, 42 seconds into the second period to give the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead. Her shot from a tough angle ricocheted off goalie Lisa Marshall’s (Powhatan, VA/Wayne St. Univ.) shoulder and off the cross bar before going in. Freshman Makenzie Wright (Burlington, ON/New Jersey Rockets) assisted on the goal for her first collegiate point.
Elmira tied the game with just 11 seconds left in the second when Brooke Wilgosh (Regina, SK/Notre Dame Hounds) scored off assists from Cassidy Delainey (Edmonton, AB/Edmonton Thunder) and Ashton Hogan (Shelburne, ONT/SUNY Plattsburgh). The Soaring Eagles then took the lead only 13 seconds into the third period when Tanis Lamoureux (Canton, MI/Victory Honda) scored off a feed from Erin Weston (Ajax, ON/Etobicoke Dolphins).
The game remained at 2-1 until Weston tallied with 8:40 remaining, assisted by Lamoureux and Ashley Ryan (Rochester/Rochester Edge). Lamoureux now has 99 career points (42 goals, 57 assists). Elmira finished the scoring on a power play goal by Anna Tude (Stockholm, Sweden/Balmoral Hall Blazers) with 3:17 left off assists from Katie Gaskin (Pickering, ON/Wayne St. Univ.) and Ella Stewart (Mississauga, ON/Notre Dame Hounds).
Cortland sophomore goalie Deanna Meunier (Parsippany, NJ/New Jersey Rockets)finished with 30 saves, while Marshall stopped 16 shots on goal for the Soaring Eagles. At 12-1, Elmira sits a half game ahead of Plattsburgh (11-1) in the ECAC West standings.
Game Two
Six different players scored goals and Kierra Pietramala made 17 saves for the shutout as nationally third-ranked Elmira defeated Cortland, 6-0, in an ECAC West contest.
The Soaring Eagles improved to 18-4-1 overall and 13-1 in league play. Cortland dropped to 2-19-2 and 1-12-1.
Cortland freshman goalie Kelly Farinella (Marlton, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) made 27 saves, while Red Dragon senior forward Gina Tomei (Bronx/South Shore Warriors)won 11-of-16 faceoffs.
Elmira opened the scoring with just 29 seconds left in the first half when Tanis Lamoureux scored for her 100th career point. The Soaring Eagles added two goals in the last seven minute of the second period. Ashley Ryan scored with 6:44 left, just as a Cortland power play had expired, and Cassidy Delainey found the net on a power play with 1:39 remaining.
Elmira broke the game open with three goals in the third. Briana Saltstone scored at the 8:21 mark, followed by Erin Weston 12:16 into the period and Sydney Fischer with5:12 remaining.
Cortland will conclude the regular season next Friday and Saturday at home versus league foe Chatham. The teams play Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m.
