William Smith College first-year Julia Mings (Tonawanda, N.Y./Sweet Home) was named the United Collegiate Hockey Conference Rookie of the Week today. This is the first time this season a Heron has won the league’s rookie of the week award.

Mings led the way for William Smith last week, factoring into three of the Herons’ six goals in a non-conference victory over Cortland on Friday. She opened the scoring just over four minutes into the game with an unassisted goal. Mings also pocketed the game-winning goal at the 17:53 mark of the first period. She tacked on an assist early in the third period.

Through the first nine games of the season, Mings has four goals and four assists for eight points. She is fourth in the UCHC and 17th in the nation in rookie scoring (0.89 ppg).

William Smith completed the fall semester with a 7-0-2 overall record and a 4-0-2 mark in conference play. The Herons are one of four undefeated teams left in the nation and are the only unbeaten team in the UCHC. Following Friday’s 6-2 victory over Cortland, William Smith found itself garnering national attention. For the first time in program history, the Herons received votes in both the D3hockey.com and the USCHO.com Division III polls.

William Smith will be back on the ice Dec. 30 and 31 when they take on Connecticut College in New London, Conn. The Camels are ranked ninth in both polls. The games at the Dayton Ice Arena are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
