PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women’s ice hockey team opened its 2026-27 campaign with a 3-1 exhibition victory over Vermont State University-Castleton on Saturday afternoon at home. The Cardinals continued their success against the Spartans after earning a 7-1 exhibition win in the teams’ meeting last season.

Castleton opened the scoring at 3:20 of the first period, but Plattsburgh responded just 45 seconds later on the power play. Sophomore forward Bailey MacKellar (Hamburg, N.Y.) found the back of the net off assists from senior defender Adriana Urban(Monroe, N.J.) and forward Tess Mulkerron (Concord, N.H.) to even the score at 1-1.

The Cardinals took the lead later in the opening period when sophomore forward Zoe Puc (West Palm Beach, Fla.) scored at 16:57. Sophomore forward Parker Riley (London, Ontario) and first-year forward Audrey Agbay (Beverly Hills, Mich.) assisted on the goal, giving Plattsburgh a 2-1 advantage heading into the first intermission.

After a scoreless second period, Plattsburgh added insurance in the third. Senior forward Emily Kasprzak (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) scored at 8:08, finishing a play set up by MacKellar to extend the Cardinals’ lead to 3-1. Plattsburgh’s defense held firm the rest of the way to secure the exhibition victory.

The Cardinals also capitalized on special teams, converting once on three power-play opportunities while holding Castleton scoreless on all three of its power plays.

The Cardinals kick off their season with an exhibition win and will play one last exhibition on the road next weekend against Canton before opening up regular-season play.–
