Potdam Women Down Chatham

0

PITTSBURGH, PA.—Sophomore forward Alexandra Holowka (Winnipeg,
Manitoba/Balmoral Hall) scored two goals to lead the SUNY Potsdam women’s
hockey team (8-11-2, 4-7-1 ECAC West) to a 3-0 win over Chatham University
(3-17-0, 0-13-0) on Saturday afternoon. Freshman forward Sally Mooney (New
Albany, Ohio/Wyoming Seminary) also scored for the Bears and junior
goaltender Dawna Salvarinas (Mississauga, Ontario/Brampton Thunder)
stopped 13 shots for her third shutout of the season.

Potsdam outshot the Cougars 16-6 in the opening period. Mooney got the
Bears on the board at the 17:10 mark with an assist from junior forward
Amanda Lucky (Kanata, Ontario/Clarkson University).

Potsdam dominated a penalty filled middle stanza with an 11-2 shot
advantage. Holowka doubled Potsdam’s lead at the 18:57 mark on a helper
from senior captain Katie Komsa (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont./Sault Ste. Marie
AA Midget).

The Bears never relinquished control of the contest in the third period.
Mooney set up Holowka’s second tally at the 7:15 mark to put the game
away. Potsdam outshot Chatham 9-5 in the final 20 minutes.

Cougar goalie Megan Buchanan made 33 saves in a losing cause. Potsdam was
0-3 on the power play and Chatham was 0-4. Salvarinas’ shutout was the
fourth of her career.

Bears Head Coach Jay Green was pleased with the performance.

“It was a solid team effort both offensively and defensively,” said Green.
“Dawna made key saves on about five opportunities. She came up big for us
in chance that could have changed the complexion of the game. And Alex
scored two big goals for us. Everyone worked really hard today.”

Cornell Women Upset RPI and Do It For Daron

0

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Big Red women’s hockey team raise awareness for a great cause this weekend and also raised its position in the ECAC Hockey standings with another victory on Saturday evening.

In the second game of the Do It For Daron Series, No. 5 Cornell came away with a 3-1 victory in a physical contest against Rensselaer at Lynah Rink.

With more than 900 fans in the stands to cheer on the team, players from Cornell wore purple on their jerseys to promote youth mental health while also putting on a show with the puck. Cassandra Poudrier had a goal and two assists, Brianne Jenner notched a goal and an assist and Jessica Campbell had a huge insurance goal in the third period to seal the win.

“It’s unreal to see the Lynah Faithful come out for our team,” said Campbell, wearing her purple D.I.F.D. shirt. “We love playing for the big crowd. It gets us pumped up. Especially in the second half of the season as it starts getting down to crunch time, having that fan support is just going to make us that much stronger.”

Besides the win over Rensselaer (9-16-3, 7-8-1 ECAC Hockey), Cornell (19-4, 14-2) also got great news from the North Country as St. Lawrence defeated Clarkson 3-2. That win puts Cornell’s own postseason fate in its hands, as it is all alone in second place in the conference standings. Cornell is one point behind Harvard and still has a game against the Crimson in two weeks to jump ahead of them.

“We’re happy obviously, and it helps us right now, but St. Lawrence is a tough team and like last year they seem to get better as the season goes on,” coach Doug Derraugh said. “We’re just reminding [the players] it doesn’t matter who you’re playing, where you’re playing, when you’re playing. It’s going to be a battle all the way.”

The Big Red got another terrific performance from goalie Lauren Slebodnick, who stopped 17 shots for her 16th victory of the season. She gave up just two goals in three games this week as Cornell is now on an eight-game winning streak. The team has also claimed its last 10 contests against the Engineers and is 12-0 in Lynah Rink this season.

Just as she did on Friday night against Union, Jenner got the Big Red offense going early on Saturday. Jillian Saulniertook the puck on a pass off the boards by Poudrier, and she and Jenner entered the zone together. Saulnier passed to Jenner, who gave it right back as they got closer to the goal. At the last moment, Saulnier centered to Jenner for the game-opening goal. It was the 26th of the season for Jenner and Saulnier’s 30th assist.

Twelve minutes later, the Big Red struck on the power play to make it 2-0. After terrific movement through the offensive zone, Poudrier had the puck on her stick at the center of the blue line. She fired the puck through traffic, and it took a deflection off an Engineers’ stick into the net. Jenner got the primary assist – her 50th point of the year – and Taylor Woods earned the secondary assist.

“I tried to put it to the net, and for some reason it deflected off a stick and went into the net,” Poudrier said. “We took the goal. Every goal we’re going to take no matter what.”

The second period was a defensive battle for both sides that started with multiple penalties in the first three minutes. That resulted in a brief period of three-on-three hockey that was followed by four-on-four, and the Engineers converted with the extra space on the ice.

Cornell had a poor pass in its own defensive zone, and the puck went right to Rensselaer’s Eleeza Cox. The sophomore had the puck a few feet from goal, and she fired high over Slebodnick to bring her team within one.

But the third-period goal from Campbell shut things down for the Engineers. In a strong offensive set, Poudrier passed left to right across the blue line to Hayleigh Cudmore. The junior fired a slapshot, and Campbell redirected the puck past O’Brien to give Cornell a 3-1 lead.

“I just saw Cudmore get the puck on the point, and I was trying to get in front of the net for a screen,” Campbell said. “I saw the puck go wide so I tried to get a tip on it, and luckily it bounced right into the net.”

From there, the Big Red’s defense stymied Rensselaer at every turn. The Big Red took three consecutive penalties after the goal, but it killed off each of them. Slebodnick saved eight shots in the period – the most she faced all game – and RPI went to an empty net with four minutes left.

The threat ended when Jordan Smelker took a high-sticking penalty and then a 10-minute misconduct for arguing the call. That put the Engineers back to a five-on-five even with their goalie pulled, and Cornell held on from there.

“The way we play our game is really physical in the first place,” Poudrier said. “Every practice we battle hard just between our teammates, so when games are tough we are ready to battle right away.”

Cornell has five days off before its next contest when it heads to Connecticut for a 7 p.m. Friday game at Quinnipiac. Cornell then plays at Princeton at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Canisius Cruises to Victory

0

The Canisius College hockey team cruised to a 3-0 victory against visiting Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon, controlling the contest from beginning to end. The Griffs improve to 10-12-5 with the win and 9-7-2 against Atlantic Hockey foes, while the Crusaders drop to 13-10-2 and 9-7-2 in league play.

“We had a really good 60-minute effort today against a very talented Holy Cross team,” said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. “It was a combination of execution and being motivated from a dangerous team on the other side. It’s a battle every night out there and today we got two crucial points. We will look for the same effort tomorrow and every time here on out in a tight conference battle.”

Junior Kyle Gibbons (Westlake, Ohio) led the Griffs with a pair of goals in the winning effort with senior captain Preston Shupe (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) also chipping in a tally.

Junior netminder Tony Capobianco (Mississauga, Ontario) recorded 23 saves for his second shutout of the season and the third of his career.

Canisius dominated right from the start, outshooting the Crusaders, 17-7, in the opening period. Shupe highlighted the opening 20 minutes of play with his 11th tally of the season, giving the Griffs all the offense they would need on the day. Freshman Chris Rumble (Chesapeake, Va.)had his shot from the point deflected and Shupe gathered the loose puck down low. The senior captain then found the back of the net 4:07 into the game for the 1-0 lead. Freshman Stephen Miller (Boxborough, Mass.) also registered an assist on the go-ahead goal.

The Griffs continued their strong play in the second stanza with two tallies by Gibbons. The junior scored his first of the day and 12th of the season 8:56 into the period on the power play. Off the rush, sophomore Cody Freeman (Toronto, Ontario) skated toward the goal and knocked the puck out front. Gibbons was there to send it into the net for the 2-0 lead. Junior defender Ben Danford (Stillwater, Minn.) also registered an assist on the goal.

Gibbons then netted his team-leading 13th tally of the season with 6:35 remaining in the second. From behind the net, Freeman centered the puck and Gibbons fired it in for the 3-0 advantage. Junior Patrick Sullivan (Derby, N.Y.) added an assist on game’s final goal.

Capobianco and the Canisius defense took it from there, sealing the shutout victory by stopping all 23 shots on goal.

Canisius finished the game with a 34-23 advantage in shots. The Griffs were 1-for-4 on the power play, while killing all four Crusader extra-man advantages.

Matt Ginn stopped 31 shots in net for Holy Cross.

The schools, who are now tied for fourth in the Atlantic Hockey standings, wrap up the two-game series tomorrow afternoon. Game time at the Buffalo State Sports Arena is set for 2:05 p.m.

Bengals Defeat Bears

BUFFALO, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men’s hockey team (6-14-1, 3-9 SUNYAC)
rallied for a brief 2-1 lead before falling to Buffalo State 3-2 on
Saturday night. Sophomore Ken Simon (Norwell, Mass./Philadelphia
Revolution) and junior assistant captain Mike Arnold (Didsbury,
Alberta/Kingston Voyageurs) each scored for the Bears.

Mike Zannella opened the scoring at the 9:19 mark of the first period,
giving the Bengals a 1-0 lead. Simon answered for Potsdam six minutes
later with assists from junior forward Zach Blake (Campellford,

Pa./Hartford Wolfpack). Buffalo State outshot the Bears 10-6 in the first
period.

Arnold put Potsdam in front just 2:30 into the second period. Sophomore
forward Dan McCamey (Dayton, Ohio/Minnesota Flying Aces) and sophomore
defenseman Max Fogel (Williamsville, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) assisted on
the goal. Nearly 10 minutes later, Trevor McKinney knotted the score at
2-2. At the 15:50 mark, Brett Hope received a five minute-major and a game
misconduct for contact to the head. The Bears were able to get pressure on
Bengals goaltender Kevin Carr, but were unable to regain the lead. The
shots were even at 9-9 in the middle stanza.

At 4:24 of the final period, Taylor McGraw, who scored the game-winner in
last year’s playoff meeting, did it again. Potsdam couldn’t get the
equalizer on one more power play and killed off two more penalties. With
1:24 remaining, the Bears pulled freshman goalie Austin Keiser (Dunwoody,
Ga./Boston Bulldogs) for an extra attacker before falling 3-2.

Keiser finished with 26 saves and Carr stopped 23 shots to earn the
victory. Potsdam was 0-5 on the man advantage and the Bengals went 0-4.

The game marks the end of the Bears 13-game road trip. They return to the
friendly confines of Massena Arena for their final four regular season
contests. Next Friday, Potsdam hosts Brockport at 7 p.m. On Saturday,
Geneseo invades for an 8 p.m. faceoff.

No. 17 Niagara Beat Bentley 6-4, Complete Sweep

0

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – A pair of goals from Ryan Murphy and Marc Zanette gave No. 17 Niagara a lead it would not relinquish in a 6-4 win against Bentley on Saturday night at Dwyer Arena.

The win strengthens the Purple Eagles’ (17-4-5; 16-1-2 AHA) hold on the top spot in the Atlantic Hockey standings, now 11 points ahead of second-place Mercyhurst   Tonight’s victory also breaks the record for most conference wins in a season in the program’s 17 year history, previously held by the 1999-00 team that went 15-0-2 in the College Hockey America.

While Zanette and Murphy each pocketed three points on the night with two goals and an assist, line mate Patrick Divjak had a two point night with a pair of helpers to keep the Purple Eagles’ home-ice unbeaten streak alive at 17, dating back to dating back to NU’s 3-3 draw against Air Force on Feb. 11, 2012.

“We have so much respect for Bentley and what they can do to you, and they showed it tonight,” head coach Dave Burkholder said.  “The guys persevered and got it gone.  Going into the third period with a one goal lead, the motto of this team is do whatever it takes to win, and they certainly did that.  We were able to keep the streak alive at home, and we just have to keep it rolling from here.”

Bentley (11-13-1; 9-9-1 AHA) put Niagara in an early hole just 38 seconds into the opening frame as Brett Switzer tipped in shot from Andrew Gladiuk under the pads of Niagara goaltender Carsen Chubak to make it a 1-0 game.

Niagara clawed its way back into the game, netting a trio of goals to head into the first intermission with a 3-1 advantage.  Murphy grabbed the game-tying goal at the 6:14 mark for his career best 10th goal of the season.  Murphy picked up a mishandled puck in the Purple Eagle defensive zone and rushed in on a breakaway on Bentley goaltender Branden Komm, lifting a backhander top shelf.

Ryan Rashid was next to light the lamp, collecting a feed from Chris Lochner before wristing his eighth goal of the season over the shoulder of Komm.  Sam Alfieri wrapped up first period scoring with 26 seconds remaining as Jeff Hannan hit the right winger with a hard pass across the slot for the easy tap in and his first of the season.

The teams combined for five goals in the second period to give Niagara a slim 5-4 lead heading into the final 20 minutes of play.

Bentley got another early period score, this time from Jared Rickord at the 17:55 mark.  Zanette responded less than three minutes later with his seventh goal of the year.  Murphy took the puck to net and had the initial shot on Komm, but the rebound jumped out to Zanette who was waiting at the doorstep and whacked it home.

Matt Maher made it a 4-3 game nine minutes into the period, before Murphy pocketed his second goal of the game off a shot from the slot that hit a defenseman before popping over the shoulder of Komm to serve as the game’s eventual game-winner.

Justin Breton brought the contest back within one for the Falcons with 55 seconds remaining in the second, but Bentley could not muster the game-tying goal in the final period as Zanette sealed the victory with an empty-net tally with 16 seconds left in the game.

Chubak finished the evening with 21 saves. Lochner now has 10 points in 10 games, scoring four goals and six assists in that span.

The Purple Eagles continue AHA play next week as they battle cross-town rival Canisius in a home-and-home series.  The first game will be at Buffalo State Sports Arena on Thursday, Feb. 7, with the second game coming from Dwyer Arena on Saturday, Feb. 9.  Both contests start at 7:05 p.m.

Tickets for Saturday’s game can be purchased by calling the Niagara Ticket Office (located inside Dwyer Arena) at 716-286-TIXX, visit www.PurpleEagles.com/Tickets or emailing [email protected].

Canisius Falls to Holy Cross; Faces Rival NU This Weekend

0

The Canisius College hockey team couldn’t finish off a weekend sweep on Sunday, falling to Holy Cross, 5-1, at the Buffalo State Sports Arena. The Griffs are now 10-13-5 on the season and 9-8-2 against league foes, while the Crusaders improve to 14-10-2 and 10-7-2 in Atlantic Hockey play.

“Holy Cross played very well and very hard today,” said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. “We weren’t able to get that second goal in the second period when the game was tied and we were playing our best hockey. Points every night and every weekend are huge with the standings so tight so we just need to regroup and come back strong next weekend.”

Junior Kyle Gibbons (Westlake, Ohio) scored the lone goal for the Griffs – his third-straight game with a tally to extending his career-best point streak to nine contests.

The Crusaders netted the game’s opening tally, scoring 11:57 into the contest. Evan Zych fired a shot toward goal for Holy Cross and the puck deflected off a Canisius defender. Canisius’ Tony Capobianco (Mississauga, Ontario) stopped the bouncing puck but couldn’t control the rebound and Shayne Stockton knocked it in for the 1-0 lead.

The Griffs fought back and eventually knotted the game at one. From the point on the power play, Gibbons sent the puck into the back of the net for his team-leading 14th goal of the season and seventh with the extra-man advantage. Junior Ben Danford (Stillwater, Minn.) and sophomore Mitch McCrank (Haileybury, Ontario) both recorded assists on the game-tying goal at the 5:07 mark of the second period.

The Griffs continued their strong play after Gibbons’ tally but couldn’t find the go-ahead goal and the momentum slowly turned back toward Holy Cross’ way. The Crusaders took advantage by netting two goals in the final three minutes of the second stanza. Tim Driscoll knocked in a rebound with 2:44 remaining in the period and Stockton netted his second of the day with 1:28 left, sneaking the puck around Capobianco on a rush.

Holy Cross then added two final tallies in the final five minutes of regulation. Karl Beckman scored an unassisted goal on the power play, taking advantage of a Canisius turnover, and Rob Linsmayer then sealed the victory with his sixth of the season.

Overall, the Crusaders finished the game with a 33-29 advantage in shots. Holy Cross was 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Griffs converted 1-of-5 extra-man chances.

Both Capobianco and Holy Cross’ Matt Ginn recorded 28 saves in goal.

Canisius now prepares for a rivalry series with Niagara in the upcoming week. The two schools open the series on Thursday at the Buffalo State Sports Arena with game time slated for 7:05 p.m.

Jenner and Slobodnick Honored by ECAC

0

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Big Red women’s hockey team went 7-1 in January, and ECAC Hockey has recognized two Cornell players as essential to that terrific month by  giving them ECAC Hockey Women’s Monthly Awards on Thursday night.

Brianne Jenner, the team’s leading scorer, was named the ECAC Hockey Player of the Month, and goalie Lauren Slebodnick was named the league’s Goaltender of the Month.

Jenner had team highs in goals (12), points (23) and plus/minus (+20) in January as she crept up the national rankings in multiple categories. She now sits third in the country in points per game (2.21), second in the country in goals per game (1.11) and six in the nation in assists per game (1.11). Jenner averaged nearly three points per game in January as she earned an ECAC Hockey Player of the Week honor once. She contributed a goal or an assist on 23 of Cornell’s 37 goals in the month. Jenner also moved up into the top 10 in team history for assists, where she is now eighth at 86. She also scored her 150th career point against Mercyhurst on Tuesday.

On the other end of the ice, Slebodnick was just as impressive. Starting all eight games for the Big Red, she went 7-1 with a goals against average of 1.30. She earned one ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week award and had three wins over teams in the top 10 in the country at the time (No. 9 Northeastern, No. 6 Clarkson, No. 7 Mercyhurst). Slebodnick allowed only three goals in four conference games, earning a 0.82 GAA in those contests. During January, Slebodnick went from fifth all-time at Cornell in wins to her current place in third tied with Alanna Hayes. She is now 12 wins away from the all-time record at Cornell held by Amanda Mazzotta ’12. Slebodnick has the nation’s sixth-best goals against average (1.56), ninth-highest save percentage (.927) and eighth-best winning percentage (.778).

The Big Red has never had a Goaltender of the Month before, and its lone Player of the Month Award was given to Rebecca Johnston ’12 last year for January. Sophomore Jillian Saulnier was named the league’s Rookie of the Month in October and November last season.

Jenner, Slebodnick and the No. 5 Big Red take on Union and Rensselaer this weekend at Lynah Rink in the Do It For Daron Series. Fans are encouraged to wear purple to show their support for DIFD, which aims to raise awareness of youth mental health. Cornell and Union drop the puck at 7 p.m. Friday, and Rensselaer comes to town at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Mercyhurst Tops Canisius

0

Erie, Pa. – Four third-period goals led Mercyhurst to a 5-2 win against the Canisius College hockey team on Tuesday night. The Griffs fall to 9-12-5 on the season and 8-7-2 in Atlantic Hockey play, while the Lakers improve to 12-10-1 and 10-7-0 in league play.

“It was a good back-and-forth game for two periods,” said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. “We were a little careless in the third and the Lakers, with their skill, capitalized. We need to use these games as motivation for next weekend and recognize that we are in the thick of the standings right now.”

Junior Kyle Gibbons (Westlake, Ohio) and freshman Ralph Cuddemi (Concord, Ontario) both scored for the Griffs.

Junior Tony Capobianco (Mississauga, Ontario) finished with 26 saves for Canisius.

After a scoreless opening frame, Gibbons gave the Griffs the lead with 11:37 remaining in the second. The junior ripped a shot in on the power play from the point for his team-best 11th tally of the season. Sophomore Mitch McCrank (Haileybury, Ontario) posted the assist for the 1-0 lead.

The Lakers answered back shortly before the second intermission. After the Griffs failed to clear their defensive zone, Daniel Bahntge put a loose puck into the net from the right face-off circle to knot the contest at one with 1:24 left in the period.

Canisius reclaimed its lead early in the third period when Cuddemi netted his second career goal in as many games. On a power play, senior Preston Shupe (Weyburn, Saskatchewan)tried to stuff the puck in from close range only to be denied by the Mercyhurst goaltender. Cuddemi was there, however, to knock the rebound in for the 2-1 lead. Junior Ryan Bohrer (West St. Paul, Minn.) also recorded an assist on the goal 3:35 into the third.

The Griffs lead, however, would be short-lived as the Lakers answered back just nine seconds later. Mercyhurst took advantage of another Canisius miscue in its own zone when Matthew Zay scored to knot the contest at two.

The Lakers then took their first lead of the day shortly after tying the contest. Paul Chiasson finished off a 3-on-2 rush for a 3-2 advantage with 14:07 left in regulation. Mercyhurst then sealed the victory when Chris Bodo scored on a 2-1 rush with 2:47 remaining. Daniel O’Donoghue added an empty-net goal for the 5-2 final.

The Griffs finished the contest with a 32-31 edge in shots. Canisius won the special teams battle on the night, going 2-for-3 with the extra-man advantage and killing the only two Mercyhurst power plays.

The Griffs return home next weekend with a two-game series against Holy Cross. The schools open the series on Saturday at 3:05 p.m.

over the SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (7-11-2) at Cheel Arena on
Tuesday night. Junior forward Amanda Lucky (Kanata, Ontario/Clarkson
University) and sophomore forward Izzy Fayerman (Calgary, Alberta/The
Edge) each had a goal and an assist for the Bears.

The Continentals scored on their second shot of the game. Zimmerman fired
a shot on goal and Haskins scored on the rebound 36 seconds into the
contest. Potsdam senior goalie Jen Conophy (Glenmont, N.Y./Albany Ice
Cats) was solid for the rest of the period. After withstanding another
offensive burst over the next few minutes, the Bears’ offense picked up
its energy. At the 11:27 mark, Amanda Lucky tied the game on a wraparound
from the right side of the net. Fayerman assisted on the goal. Just 49
seconds later, freshman forward Megan Fitzgerald (Great Falls, Va./Madeira
School) put Hamilton back in front. Conophy got a piece of the puck, but
it slid past her. Junior defenseman Jill Tokarczyk (North Tonawanda,
N.Y./Nichols School) and Haskins recorded the assists. The Continentals
outshot Potsdam 14-7 in the first 20 minutes and led 2-1 at the break.

The teams traded chances in an even second period. Hamilton held a 13-10
shot advantage. At 10:38, freshman forward Hannah Bartlett (Mansfield,
Mass./St. Mark’s School) jammed the puck between the left post and
Conophy’s right skate for a 3-1 Continental lead. Freshman forward Grace
Murphy (Orlando, Fla./Brewster Academy) notched the assist on the goal.
Conophy and Hamilton junior goalie Tori Bogen (Grosse Pointe Woods,
Mich./Grosse Pointe North) shut down the offenses the rest of the period.

Just 3:26 into the 3rd period, Zimmerman buried her own rebound on the
power play to give the Continentals a 4-1 lead. Bartlett assisted on the
play. Eight minutes later, the Bears got back to within 4-2 on an even
strength tally from Fayerman. Freshman defenseman Katie Marsman (Wantagh,
N.Y./Wyoming Seminary) and Amanda Lucky assisted on the goal. Hamilton’s
defense clamped down after the marker to seal the win.

Conophy finished with 36 saves, while Bogen stopped 20 shots for her first
win of the season. The Continentals outshot the Bears 40-22 on the night.
Hamilton was 1-2 on the man advantage and Potsdam was 0-1.

Next, the Bears head for Pittsburgh for two important conference games at
Chatham over the weekend. Potsdam battles the Cougars at 3 p.m. on
Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Cornell’s Shutout Gives Derraugh Record Wins @ 136

ITHACA, N.Y. – A Cornell women’s hockey record fell on Tuesday night, and the Big Red helped their coach earn that record in style.

With a 4-0 shutout against No. 7 Mercyhurst in Lynah Rink, Doug Derraugh became the winningest coach in Cornell women’s hockey history. His win total stands at 136, one ahead of the team’s first ever coach, Bill Duthie.

“If you stay in it long enough, you’re bound to get there eventually,” Derraugh said. “But I’m very, very blessed to be in a situation where … the administrators really supported women’s ice hockey here at Cornell.”

Brianne Jenner had two goals in the first period, Jessica Campbell had a breakaway goal to seal the contest in the third and Lauren Slebodnick (14-4) earned her third shutout of the season by making 18 saves against the nation’s third-best offense. The win puts her career number at 41, tying her with Alanna Hayes for third in team history.

No. 5 Cornell (17-4) also had to kill off five consecutive penalties in the third period – including two separate spans of five-on-three – to earn the victory over a very competitive Mercyhurst (19-5-1) squad. The win was Cornell’s second straight over Mercyhurst and kept the team a perfect 10-0 in Lynah Rink this season.

“I was real happy with the way our team played,” Derraugh said. “It was good to see us get off to a good start, come ready to play.”

The Big Red got off to a flying start, tallying a goal just 2:27 into the game on a shot from the slot by Hayleigh Cudmore. Taking a pass from the low right side by Jillian Saulnier, Cudmore beat Amanda Makela to the left, and Cornell had a 1-0 lead.

Jenner had the secondary assist on the first goal, but the Big Red’s second strike was all hers. One of the Mercyhurst defensemen had the puck at the left point, and she attempted to dump the puck down low into the corner. Jenner got in the way of the play, deflecting it off her shin pad, and she was off 120 feet in the other direction on a breakaway. She went to her backhand at the last moment, getting around Makela and making it 2-0.

Jenner had the team’s next goal as well when she took a pass down low from Laura Fortino at the left point. She skated the puck toward the net and shot five-hole on Makela. Though the goalie got a piece of the puck, it rolled over the goal line and the Big Red’s lead ballooned to 3-0. The goal marked the 150th point of Jenner’s career. Fortino also earned her 93rd career assist on the play and is now No. 5 on the Big Red all-time list.

“I was kind of caught in limbo because I wasn’t sure if I should go aggressive,” Jenner said. “I just went to my go-to move, and I was lucky it was there.”

The Lakers went with a different goalkeeper in the second period, inserting Stephanie Ciampa in favor of Makela. Cornell nearly extended the lead to 4-0 on a four-on-four situation midway through the second period when Saulnier had a hard wrist shot from the slot. The puck rang off the right post, though, keeping the margin at three for the moment.

The third period saw Cornell’s penalty killing unit in top form, holding the Lakers scoreless despite spending nearly 12 full minutes in the box. Cornell was overall 8 for 8 on the kill Tuesday night, and the backbreaking goal came soon after Cornell killed off its fourth straight penalty of the period.

“We relied a lot on our PK, which we weren’t too happy about,” Jenner said. “But the performance of the PK was good.”

Alyssa Gagliardi fished the puck from the corner of the boards while two players were going after it, and she started up the ice. She fed Taylor Woods in the neutral zone, and Woods found a streaking Campbell who was behind the defense. Campbell, on a breakaway, sniped the puck over Ciampa’s glove hand for the 4-0 lead.

The Big Red is back in action on Friday when it hosts Rensselaer in the first game of the Do It For Daron Series at 7 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear purple to show support for the charity.
