TIM HORTON CLASSIC ON FOR THIS WEEKEND!

32 Teams to Take the Ice for the Tim Hortons Backyard Classic

Sharpen your skates, tape your sticks, and bundle up! The Tim Hortons Backyard Classic 3 on 3 outdoor ice hockey tournament will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, at The Rose Garden Restaurant, 2753 Wehrle Drive, Williamsville.  The tournament is sold-out, causing the tournament staff to create a special ‘Preview to the Classic’ four-team tournament on Saturday, Jan. 26 from 1-4 p.m for Middle School players.

On Sunday, 28 teams will compete in Mite (5-7 year olds), High School and Adult divisions.  The first puck drop will be at 9 a.m. From 12-1 p.m, Buffalo Sabres alumni will serve as guest bartenders and Sabretooth will entertain players and spectators.  Doug Allen will sing the American and Canadian National Anthems at 3:00 p.m to start the playoffs.  Games will be played throughout the day until 6 p.m.

The Backyard Classic was founded in 2008 by East Amherst, NY resident Nicholas Penberthy, currently a sophomore at SUNY Cortland (www.cortland.edu), studying childhood education. For the last four years, the tournament was played on Penberthy’s backyard ice rink, which his family set up each winter at their home.

In 2011, it was expanded to a second Williamsville, NY location hosted by Chris Taggart, who serves as Co-Chair. Taggart contacted Penberthy, a Williamsville North High School graduate, after viewing a news report about the backyard hockey tournament he founded. Taggart felt compelled to assist in coordinating the event to put his backyard rink to use for such a great cause. Last year, the tournament was forced into a street hockey tournament due to the lack of cold weather, making players and tournament officials eager to get back to the ice.

The event was renamed the Tim Hortons Backyard Classic in 2012, thanks to the generous support of Tim Hortons Café & Bake Shop, who continue to be the Platinum Sponsor.

This year with the relocation to The Rose Garden, the tournament has been able to register a record 32 teams who will play on four large outdoor ice rinks.  “This recent cold weather has created much excitement in Western New York as we have seen a spike on our social media pages and website in visitors as well as registrations,” said Penberthy.

The Tim Hortons Backyard Classic has raised over $20,000 for Hasek’s Heroes, an organization founded by NHL great and former Buffalo Sabre Dominik Hasek, which introduces city youth to ice hockey and life skills.  The proceeds from this event will be used to build an educational resource center.

Niagara Hockey Ranked 17th in Latest USCHO.com Poll

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara Purple Eagles is ranked No. 17 in the latest USCHO.com Division I poll released on Monday afternoon.

The Purple Eagle garnered 183 points to remain in the poll for the program-best ninth consecutive week.   The USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine College Hockey Poll has the Purps receiving 17 votes, while the NCAA Tournament PairWise Comparison Ratings has NU tied for 17th with Alaska.

Niagara currently holds a 14-4-4 overall record, and 13-1-1 mark in Atlantic Hockey play to keep hold of the top spot in the conference with 27 points, nine points ahead of second-place Mercyhurst.  In 15 conference games, NU has outscored its opposition 53-22—second in the nation for the fewest goals allowed during league play this season.  The Purps, whose .727 team winning percentage is third in the country, hold the second best conference record in NCAA Division I hockey, as Quinnipiac sits at the top with an 11-0-1 mark in the ECAC conference.

For the third consecutive time since the 2009-10 season the Purps split with the Holy Cross Crusaders in their weekend series on Jan. 18 and Jan. 19.  Niagara dropped its first conference game of the year, 5-3, on Friday, but bounced back with a solid 4-1 victory to wrap up the two-game battle.

Niagara returns to action on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 25-26, when they travel to Rochester, N.Y. to take on the RIT Tigers at Ritter Arena before returning to Monteagle Ridge the following day to finish the home-and-home series.   Both contests are scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m.

Big Red Jenner and Slebodnick Honored

0

ITHACA, N.Y. – After a week that saw the Big Red women’s hockey team earn three victories and outscore its opponents by a combined 17-2, Cornell junior forward Brianne Jenner was named the ECAC Hockey Player of the Week and junior goalie Lauren Slebodnick  earned Goaltender of the Week Honors.

Slebodnick had what might be her best week of the season, turning away 13 shots against Syracuse, 16 against No. 6 Clarkson and making all 20 saves in a shutout against St. Lawrence. Her shutout over the Saints – just her second of the year – combined with a stellar evening against the Golden Knights helped the Big Red jump up the ECAC Hockey standings.

Her biggest moment of the weekend may have come against Clarkson, where she had to face a three-on-zero from the powerful Knights offense. Slebodnick turned away the shot by Vanessa Gagnon, preserving a 2-1 Cornell lead at the time.

This is Slebodnick’s first Goaltender of the Week award this season and the fourth of her career. She won the honor on Jan. 17 and Feb. 14 last season, Jan. 25 of her freshman season and also won Rookie of the Week on Jan. 11, 2011.

Jenner, meanwhile, was terrific on the other end of the ice. Her week began with a five-point performance against Syracuse as she scored three goals and helped on two others. She followed that with two goals and two assists against St. Lawrence, and her week ended with a goal and an assist against the Knights. Jenner had the game-winning goal in all three contests.

Jenner is no stranger to the Player of the Week award, as she won twice last season (Nov. 1, Feb. 14). She was also named ECAC Hockey’s Rookie of the Week three times in the 2010-11 season.

The Big Red returns to action on the road this weekend against Ivy League rivals Yale and Brown.

RIT Sweeps Army

0

WEST POINT, NY – The RIT (8-10-4, 6-6-3 Atlantic Hockey Association) men’s hockey team came into the weekend needing a sweep to make a jump in the AHA standings. With a 4-2 win on Saturday night over Army (7-12-3, 7-7-3 AHA) the Tigers completed the sweep, earning four important points in the standings.

“I thought it was a great effort by us all weekend long,” said RIT Head Coach Wayne Wilson. “We played hard and were very smart all weekend long. We’re right in the hunt now. We’ve got to keep working hard and getting better.”

Adam Mitchell (Crofton, MD) and Jeff Smith (Spokane, WA) each scored a pair of goals, and Adam Hartley (West Vancouver, British Columbia) dished out three assists to lead the Tigers. Mike Colavecchia (Maple, Ontario) and Chris Saracino (St. Louis, MO) each had an assist and Josh Watson (Lititz, PA) picked up his seventh win of the season allowing two goals and making 21 saves.

RIT outshot the Black Knights 40-23 and were 1-for-2 with the man advantage, while holding Army to zero goals in two power play chances. Ryan Leets took the loss for Army allowing three goals and making 36 saves.

RIT led 2-0 after the first period on a pair of goals by Adam Mitchell (Crofton, MD). The Tigers fired 12 shots on net to nine for the Black Knights.

Mitchelll gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead at 10:21 on his seventh goal of the season. Chris Saracino (St. Louis, MO) started the play passing to Adam Hartley (West Vancouver, British Columbia) in the RIT zone. Hartley found Mitchell who used a nice toe-drag move to get himself free. He sent a wrist into the top shelf over Army goalie Ryan Leets’ shoulder.

Mitchell made it 2-0 at 14:35 on a nice give-and-go play between he and Mike Colavecchia (Maple, Ontario). Hartely dug the puck out of the corner and got it to Colavecchia. He and Mitchell worked the give-and go and Mitchell placed another wrist shot past Leets for his eighth tally of the season. The goal was Mitchell’s 50th career point in a Tigers sweater.

Josh Watson (Lititz, PA) was excellent in the first period stopping all nine shots he faced. His best coming with 8:23 to play in the period on a partial break by Shane Hearn. He tried to beat Watson with a shot to the glove side, but Watson stuck the glove out and snatched the puck out of the air.

Army scored twice and the Tigers scored once in the second period. Josh Richards scored at 1:22 of the period off an assist from Cheyne Rocha. He took advantage of a RIT turnover deep in their own zone and beat Watson with a backhanded shot to make it 2-1 RIT.

Jeff Smith (Spokane, WA) tallied his ninth goal of the season and third of the weekend at 5:17 of the second to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead. He took a feed from Hartley and jammed home a one-timer from the slot to give the Tigers a two-goal edge.

Joe Kozlak tallied at 9:44 to cut the RIT lead back to a goal on his fifth goal of the season. Willie Faust had the assist on the play.

Plenty of action at both ends of the ice for both teams in the third period. Watson and the Tigers were under fire in the third period as Army fired 10 shots on net. But RIT and Watson held tough turning away all 10 shots.  He made two of his 10 saves with 7:42 to play and RIT on the penalty kill. Army fired a shot that Watson turned aside and had to react and make another off the rebound keeping the Tigers up on the scoreboard.

Leets was excellent for the Black Knights making 12 of his 36 saves in the third period. One chance coming late in the period for Andrew Miller (West Dundee, IL/Jacobs) who found himself alone in front of the Army net. The puck wouldn’t calm down and Leets was able to make the save to keep it a one-goal game at the time.

With the Army net empty and RIT on the power play, Smith capped off the weekend with his fourth goal of the weekend and second of the evening at 19:35.

RIT returns to action on Friday, Jan. 25 when the Tigers host AHA rival #15 Niagara at 7:05 pm. These two teams met back on December 12, skating to a 2-2 tie in Niagara Falls, New York.

0

ROCHESTER, NY – Junior forward Kourtney Kunichika (Fullerton, CA/Marina) of the RIT women’s hockey team was named the College hockey America Player of the Week on Monday, for the week ending Jan. 20, 2013. It is Kunichika’s first weekly honor of her RIT career.

Kunichika tied a career-high with six points on three goals and three assists in Friday’s 11-0 win over Sacred Heart. She scored a goal in each period for her second career hat-trick. Kunichika is now tied for the team lead in scoring with 18 points on seven goals and 11 assists in 20 games.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday and Sunday with a pair of home games against Robert Morris. Saturday’s game begins at 7:05 p.m., while Sunday’s gets underway at 2:05 p.m.

CLINTON, N.Y. - Hamilton College and Trinity College skated to a 1-1 tie in a NESCAC game at Hamilton's Russell Sage Rink on Jan. 19. The Continentals (9-4-1 overall, 4-3-1 NESCAC) snapped an eight-game losing streak against the Bantams. Trinity is 4-0-1 in its last five games. Hazlett's goals against average went down to 1.75. Hillary McNamara '13 notched the goal for the Bantams (7-4-4, 2-3-3) and Britney Ryan '13 was credited with her ninth assist. Alexa Pujol '14 made 35 stops one day after she turned away all 38 shots she faced in Trinity's 1-0 overtime win at Hamilton. Pujol's goals against average dropped to 1.50 and she raised her save percentage to .948. The first period ended in a scoreless tie. With 11 minutes left in the opening frame, Trinity broke free for a 2-on-1, but Hazlett came up with the stop. The Continentals went on their second power play of the afternoon soon afterwards, and started a two-skater advantage at the 11:39 mark that lasted for 26 seconds, but didn't register a shot on goal. Hamilton held a 10-5 shot advantage after 20 minutes. The Continentals continued to dominate the action in the second period, Hamilton racked up eight shots in the first 12 minutes before the Bantams registered their first. With 6:17 left in the period, Trinity got on the board on a goal by McNamara. Ryan fired the initial shot from above the right faceoff circle and McNamara poked in the rebound for her second goal this season. Just 2:08 later, Haskins notched Hamilton's first goal of the weekend and her sixth this season. Haskins smacked a slap shot from the right faceoff circle on a rush into the offensive zone. Pujol bobbled the puck and it scooted away from her into the slot. Haskins followed her shot and swept it over the sprawling goalie. The goal snapped Pujol's scoreless streak of 140 consecutive minutes. Hamilton nearly took the lead with a little over a minute to go in the period when Jill Tokarczyk '14 took a shot from just outside the crease but Pujol turned it away. The Continentals got another shot on the rebound, but were denied again. Moments later, Trinity's Shannon Farrell '16 was on a breakaway with only the goalie to beat, but Hazlett came up with the save to preserve the 1-1 tie after two periods. Hamilton held a 14-6 shot advantage in the period. Both teams had great scoring opportunities in the opening half of the third period. Brooke Heron '16 hit the left post at 3:45 and Casey Brown '16 was stopped by Pujol on a breakaway about a minute later. Stephanie Lang '14 hit the post with 12:13 left and Haskins was denied on a 2-on-1 four minutes later. The teams went to overtime for the second straight day. In the 4-on-4 extra period, Trinity's best chance came less than two minutes in when Shelby Labe '16 had an open look from the point, but Hazlett made the save. Haskins had another open look with 1:50 left, but was turned away by Pujol. Hazlett made six saves and Pujol stopped four shots in the 5-minute overtime. Hamilton outshot Trinity 36-28. The Continentals entered the day ranked fifth in Division III on the power play at 26.4 percent (14-53), but went 0-for-5 in this game and 0-for-8 for the weekend. The Bantams were 0-for-3 on the power play. The Continentals head to nationally ranked Middlebury for two NESCAC games on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 25 and 26. Trinity continues its road swing with conference games at Colby College on Friday and Saturday.
