ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT women’s hockey team will be teaming up with the CURE Childhood Cancer Association to “Skate For The Cure” during their game versus College Hockey America foe Syracuse University on Friday Feb. 8 at Ritter Arena at 7:05 p.m.
Tickets for the game are available at the Gordon Field House and Activities Center Box Office or by phone at (585) 475-4121. Fans can also purchase tickets at www.rithockey.com. Ticket prices are $5 for adults, $4 for faculty/staff/alumni and $3 for students and youth. RIT student admission is free with valid ID (ticket must be picked up at the box office, one per ID).

For an extra $1 donation, fans will receive a team photo that players can sign at the RITZ Sports Zone following the game. RIT will also wear special pink jerseys that will be available for purchase during a silent auction that will take place during the game.

All proceeds to CURE Childhood Cancer Association will be donated through the RIT United Way Campaign. For more information, visit www.curekidscancer.com.

The RIT women’s hockey team has made a habit of giving back to the community. In 2010 and 2012, RIT teamed with the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority for the “Make the Rink Pink” weekend, which raised over $47,000. The proceeds were donated evenly to the Rochester General Hospital’s Lipson Cancer Center and the Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation for Breast Cancer Education and Awareness.

In 2011 the Tigers raised $10,219 for Finger Lakes Health in conjunction with Geneva General Cardiology Associates in an effort to “Black Out Heart Disease”.

The Tigers trail the Orange by six points for second place in the CHA standings. The teams played two evenly matched games earlier in the season. On Nov. 10, they skated to a 2-2 draw at Ritter Arena. 10 days later, Syracuse snuck out a 2-1 overtime victory.

In RIT’s most recent contests, the Tigers traveled to Lindenwood and came away with one point in two games. On Friday, Tenecia Hiller (Brampton, Ontario/St. Augustine Secondary) tied the game at one at the 14:32 mark of the first period and neither team would find the back of the night the rest of the way. The Tigers lost a heartbreaker the following afternoon, rallying from a 3-1 third period deficit on another Hiller goal with just over a minute remaining. However, the Lady Lions answered with the game-winner with only seven seconds remaining.

With four power-play goals over the weekend, the Tigers are 12th nationally, converting at 21.5 percent (28-of-130) and have scored on the man-advantage in 10 of their last 11 games.

Syracuse will enter the game on a six-game winning streak and off a sweep at Robert Morris. The Orange took two one-goal victories. Nicole Ferrara scored twice on Friday to give Syracuse a 3-2 win, giving Syracuse their most conference wins in the history of the program. Ferrera also scored the game-winner in the last minute of play on Saturday in a 2-1 victory. Holly Carrie-Mattimoe leads the team with 22 points, while Melissa Piacentini is right behind with 21. Shiann Darkangelo has a team-high 13 goals. Kallie Billadeau has seen the bulk of time in net, recording a 12-6-0 mark with a 1.39 goals against average and .945 save percentage.

The game will be aired live on Time Warner Cable Sports channel 26 or 1026 for high definition subscribers with Gene Battaglia and former RIT standout Katie Stack ’11 bringing you the action from Ritter Arena. The game will also be streamed online atwitr.rit.edu and live stats will be available here.

Come out and support a tremendous cause Friday night, as the Tigers compete in their first season as a Division I program and “Rock the Ritter”.

2013 ‘Tim Horton’s Backyard Classic’ Outdoor Ice Hockey Tournament Raises $11,000 for Buffalo Inner-City Hockey Organization, Hasek’s Heroes

0

BUFFALO, NY– Hasek’s Heroes (Buffalo, N.Y.) (www.haseksheroes.org), an organization founded by NHL great and former Buffalo Sabre Dominik Hasek, which introduces city youth to ice hockey and life skills, has announced the 5th Annual Tim Horton’s Backyard Classic outdoor ice hockey tournament (www.timhortonsbackyardclassic.com) generated a record-setting $26,000 in cash and in-kind donations and sponsorships.  Net proceeds of the event will be used to construct an educational resource center to expand the organization’s programs and community outreach in Buffalo.

This year’s event featured 35 teams in four divisions including mites, middle school, high school and adult who competed on four outdoor ice rinks set up at The Rose Garden Restaurant (www.angrybuffalo.com) in Clarence, NY.  Chris Taggart, Territory Manager for CertainTeed Fence, Deck and Rail and a Williamsville, NY resident, managed the facility construction effort.  He arranged for more than $12,000 in materials, labor and event support to be donated to the tournament, which doubled the playing surfaces from prior years and will allow for continued growth and future expansion of the event.

Taggart, who serves as co-chair of the tournament, stated, “The construction trades and materials suppliers, including DiVal Safety, 84 Lumber, City Fence, Pace Landscaping & Ice Rinks and corporate sponsorships from Atlantic Bedding, CertainTeed, Jam in the Valley, The Mac Groups, Merchants Insurance, Rand Capital, Buffalo Sabres, and Synacor were an integral part of the success of our event.  This annual tournament has resulted in hundreds of inner city youth being introduced to the game of ice hockey, in addition to providing great community exposure for Hasek’s Heroes.  Since its founding, the tournament has contributed more than $30,000 to the organization.”

Five years ago, East Amherst, NY resident, Nicholas Penberthy, an Honors College student at SUNY Cortland pursuing a degree in elementary education, founded the tournament in his backyard.  “As a future teacher, the development of an educational resource center for inner-city children of the Hasek’s program was important to me.  I hope to one day teach and mentor kids in these classrooms,” said Penberthy.

“On behalf of all Buffalo-area Tim Horton’s Cafe & Bake Shop restaurant owners, we are very proud to be involved with an event that is focused on supporting the development of local youths,” said Wendy Clark, local Tim Horton’s Cafe & Bake Shop restaurant owner.  “The Tim Horton’s Backyard Classic provides local kids with a sporting and life experience they will never forget.”

Executive Director of Hasek’s Heroes, Sean Green said, “The hard work of the volunteers and the leadership of Nick Penberthy and Chris Taggart show how giving people can help change the lives of many children!”

Oswego Over Morrisville; Seniors Honored

0

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The No. 3/7 Oswego State men’s ice hockey team (18-3-0, 11-1-0 SUNYAC) pulled out a 3-2 win over streaking Morrisville (4-16-2, 4-9-0) Friday at the Campus Center Arena on a night that the Lakers honored their seniors. Captain Jon Whitelaw scored the eventual game-winner to give Oswego State its first win over the Mustangs at home since Feb. 27, 2010 in a SUNYAC semifinal contest.

The Lakers came out swarming in front of the home crowd resulting in David Titanic (Jr., Markham, Ontario) scoring his third goal in as many games 1:46 into the game. He skated up the near boards and ripped a slap shot that narrowly slid through Morrisville goalie Christopher Azzano past the goal line. Morrisville nearly evened the score in the seventh minute when Ryan Marcuz got around a Laker defender, but his shot clanged off the far post to keep Oswego State out in front.

Titanic later drew a hooking penalty at 15:55 when he received a pass behind the Mustang defensemen. The subsequent power play led to Luke Moodie (Sr., Oakville, Ontario) burying a pass that came from behind the goal line off Paul Rodrigues‘ (Sr., Etobicoke, Ontario) stick. Jon Whitelaw (Sr., Huntsville, Ontario) also earned an assist on the goal.

However, Morrisville quieted the crowd at the 18:10 mark when Zach Baker capitalized on a Laker turnover in their defensive zone to make the score 2-1 at intermission, despite owning a 16-6 advantage in shots on goal.

The Mustangs gained a 5-on-3 situation for 33 seconds in the early stages of the second period. Ten seconds after Oswego State returned to full strength, James Jarvis took a shot from the top of the slot that went top shelf over Laker goalie Andrew Hare‘s (Sr., Burlington, Ontario) blocker at the 5:12 mark to knot the game at 1-1. Mike Dolman was credited with an assist on the goal.

Midway through the second period, Whitelaw one-timed a shot in the slot along the ice just inside the left post to put Oswego State back in front at 9:46. Zach Josepher (Sr., Wantagh, N.Y.) started the play from the point, feeding Moodie at the bottom of the right face-off circle.

The Lakers threatened in the third period on a pair of power plays, but came up empty as they tried to extend the lead. However, the Mustangs began to press the issue as the frame wore on with Hare making 15 saves. Morrisville pulled Azzano with 34 seconds left in an effort to send the game into overtime, but came up empty.

Oswego State ended up 1-for-5 on the power play, while Morrisville finished 0-for-5. Hare posted his 14th win of the season after stopping 32 shots. Azzano tallied 33 saves in the losing effort.

After the game, Oswego State honored its 14 seniors on the ice. Members of the senior class include Luke Moodie,Jon WhitelawChris AyottePaul RodriguesZach JosepherTim CarrTyler LeimbrockTaylor FarrisMatt SingletonChris MuiseChris BrownJesse McConneyAndrew Hare and Daniel Jones.

The Lakers close out the regular season on the road for the final four games starting with games in Buffalo State and Fredonia next weekend.

#5 Cornell Women’s Hockey Downs Union 8-1 Behind Jenner’s Six-Point Night

0

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Big Red women’s hockey team missed its opportunities in the first period. The team didn’t make that same mistake in the second.

No. 5 Cornell scored five goals in the second frame against Union in Lynah Rink on Friday night and went on to an 8-1 victory over the Dutchwomen on Friday night.

In front of 871 fans on a night when the Big Red was supporting the Do It For Daron charity, Brianne Jenner had a four goals and two assists, Jillian Saulnier had a goal and two assists and Emily Fulton had a goal and two assists.Lauren Slebodnick was barely bothered in net, making only five saves as she earned her seventh consecutive victory.

“We came out really strong, and the main thing was we capitalized on all our chances,” senior defenseman Laura Fortino said. “Overall we were strong in all areas of the ice.”

The Big Red (18-4, 13-2) moved to a perfect 11-0 at Lynah Rink this year and won for the 17th straight time against the Dutchwomen. Cornell is also 8-1 against opposition from the Empire State this season.

Though Cornell outshot Union 13-0 in the first period, the team was only able to come away with one goal. Jenner got things going on offense early, taking a pass from Fortino and bringing the puck down close to the net on the right side. She sniped the puck past Shenae Lundberg, and it was 1-0 just 2:02 into the game. Olivia Cook got the secondary assist on the goal, recorded her first point since Feb. 11, 2011 against Brown.

That set off a completely dominant first period by the Big Red as it controlled all of the play except for two minutes of a penalty kill. By the time the first 20 minutes had expired, the Big Red had not allowed a Union shot. Cornell had not held an opponent to zero shots on goal in a period since Feb. 25, 2011 against Rensselaer.

In the second period, the Big Red cashed in on its shots at a higher rate, striking five times to head into the second intermission ahead 6-0.

Jenner had the first goal of the period a mere 51 seconds in, and Anna Zorn made it 3-0 just 10 seconds later. Cornell lost the faceoff after Jenner’s second goal, but Jess Brown picked up a Union turnover and sped into the offensive zone. Zorn was there for a centering pass, and she beat Lundberg high. The goal came on Zorn and Brown’s first shift since Dec. 1.

“It was pretty excited [to score] on my first shift back after being out for so long,” Zorn said. “[Brown] just picked the puck off the wall and made a great pass to me in the slot.”

Brown and Zorn each finished the night with two points.

Jenner completed her hat trick four minutes after that, giving her three on the season. She then assisted on Emily Fulton‘s goal at the 11:18 mark of the period and Saulnier’s goal at the 12:56 mark. Union switched goalkeepers at that point, opting for freshman Maddie Dahl. Dahl made three saves in the last seven minutes of the period to keep the game at 6-0.

Monika Leck got on the board in the third period, redirecting a rebound from a shot taken by Erin Barley-Maloney to make it 7-0. And Jenner added her fourth goal of the night at 9:04 of the final frame, taking the puck through multiple defenders from Cornell’s blue line and sneaking the puck five hole under Dahl.

The huge night for Jenner was her second six-point game of the season and her third hat trick of the year. She had a four-goal, two-assist night against Union on Nov. 16 and three goals against Syracuse on Jan. 15. Jenner also vaulted into the top 10 in Cornell history for career goals, going from off the list before the night started to tied with Chelsea Karpenko ’12 for eighth with her 68th career goal.

“What do you say?” Cornell coach Doug Derraugh said. “That last goal, she takes it from our blue line, goes through about three players and the goaltender to get it in. … She’s just a complete hockey player.”

Union’s lone tally came in the final two minutes of the contest as Jenner took a cross checking penalty. An attempted clear by Slebodnick went off the body of Union’s Courtney Turner in front, and Rebecca Babiak was in the right place to get the loose puck past Slebodnick.

Blue Devils Blank Bears, 2-0

0

FREDONIA, N.Y.— Will McLaughlin scored two second period goals for
Fredonia State (6-13-2 (4-7-1 SUNYAC) as the Blue Devils shutout the SUNY
Potsdam men’s hockey team (6-13-1 (3-8-0 SUNYAC) 2-0  on Friday night.
Freshman goaltender John Hall (Dexter, N.Y./Stouffville Spirit) made 19
saves for the Bears.

Fredonia edged Potsdam 9-7 in first period shots and each team was unable
to take advantage of its lone power play.

McLaughlin struck just 21 seconds into the second stanza for the eventual
game-winner. Chris Jung and Matt Hehr each assisted on the goal.
McLaughlin scored again just over six minutes later, providing more than
enough insurance for the Blue Devils. After the Bears killed off a
Fredonia power play, a scuffle resulted in coincidental minors and a
five-minute Potsdam man advantage. Junior forward Adam Place (Scarborough,
Ontario/Bowmanville Eagles) rang the post during the power play, but that
was as close as the Bears came to breaking through.

The Bears outshot the Blue Devils 8-4 in the final 20 minutes and were
unable to convert on the contest’s final power play. With 31 seconds left,
Potsdam pulled Hall for an extra attacker, but couldn’t get any closer.

Fredonia goalie Mark Friesen stopped all 25 shots that came his way to
earn his fifth victory of the season. Both teams were 0-3 on the power
play.

The Bears are now 21-33 -5 all-time against the Blue Devils and have not
won in Fredonia since Nov. 4, 2006.

No. 17 Niagara Sneak By Bentley With 2-1 Win

0

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The No. 17 Niagara Purple Eagles came out with a 2-1 victory over the Bentley Falcons in an Atlantic Hockey match up on Friday evening at Dwyer Arena.

The Purple Eagles (16-4-5; 15-1-2 AHA) got scores from Jeff Hannan and Chris Lochner to remain the only team in nation without loss on home ice.  Niagara is currently riding a 16 game unbeaten streak at Dwyer Arena, dating back to NU’s 3-3 draw against Air Force on Feb. 11, 2012.

“Bentley is really good offensively and they have some dangerous players, but we shut them down pretty well and ended up making one more play on offense,” head coach Dave Burkholder said.  “I thought Chubak made a couple saves on their great opportunities, and on offense it’s a different guy every game for us.  Jeff Hannan is a great two-way player for us and plays so hard every game, so for him to be rewarded like that is key for us.”

After a scoreless opening 20 minutes of play, it was the Purps who broke the scoreless draw midway through the second period.  C.J. Chartrain threw the puck into traffic that Bentley goaltender Branden Komm could not get a hold of.  The rebound jumped out to Sam Alfieri who had the initial whack at the loose puck, but it was Jeff Hannan who the puck home for his fourth goal of the year, one shy of tying his career high.

Niagara grabbed the two-goal advantage on the 12:41 mark of the final frame as Lochner snagged his eighth tally of the season.  Ryan Rashid flew into the Bentley defensive zone with Hannan and Lochner flanking him, slipping a feed to Hannan to the right of Komm.  Hannan connected a crisp pass to Lochner for the easy tap in.

The Falcons (11-12-1; 9-8-1 AHA) would cut the lead in half less than two minutes later, but it was not enough to battle back against the first-place Purple Eagles.  Michael Reardon one-timed a loose puck just inside the blue line that was deflected by Brett Hartung over the shoulder of Niagara netminder Carsen Chubak.

With the two-point night, Hannan now has a career-high 11 points on the season.  Lochner now has nine points in nine games, scoring four goals and five assists in that span.

Chubak wrapped up the game pushing aside 20 Falcon shots to improve to 16-3-5 to help the Purps extend their unbeaten streak to four games.
