Buffalo To Host TWO Ice Hockey World Championships in 2015

Buffalo Hosting Two World Championships

By Janet Schultz

USA Hockey announced today (Wednesday, May 28) that two major world ice hockey championships will come to Buffalo and be played in the soon-to-be-completed HARBORCENTER.

“This is the first time a city has hosted two world championships in one year,” said Dave Ogrean, executive director for USA Hockey.

The U18 Women’s World Championship Tournament will be played January 4 through 12, 2015 and will feature the most outstanding young women in the United States.

Second, but not at all least, is the 2015 International Paralympic Committee Ice Sledge Hockey World Championship April 24 through May 2, 2015. Team USA is coming off a gold medal in Sochi. In addition to the World’s USA Hockey will be holding a Select Camp in Buffalo at the Northtown Center in July.

“This is a great hockey market,” said Ogrean. “We are excited to come here and we thank the entire Sabres and HARBORCENTER organization, as well as the Pegulas, for helping us move forward.”

“We are incredibly pleased to have USA Hockey back I Buffalo,” said HARBORCENTER President John Koelmel.

“We have developed a strong relationship between USA Hockey, the Buffalo Sabres and HARBORCENTER.

“This is a positive day for the City of Buffalo and Mayor Byron Brown and provides more evidence that we created a unique destination for hockey events and activity for not only our region and across the country, but from around the world.”

Ted Black, president of the Buffalo Sabres, also thanked the Pegulas for what they have done and noted that they want to elevate hockey and there isn’t a better way to do it than host two major world championships and continue the relationship with USA Hockey.

“The City of Buffalo, the franchise and the sport of hockey are headed in the right direction,” said Black.

Up first, and UP being the word since the games will be played on the sixth floor of HARBORCENTER, are the women’s U18 World Championships featuring the United States, Canada, Czech Republic, Russia, Finland, Sweden, Japan and Switzerland.  Team USA has played in the gold medal game in each of the first seven editions of the event. They captured the prize in 2008, 2009 and 2010, but never on U.S. soil and hope to do that in 2015.

“It’s exciting to bring the U18 Women here,” said Reagan Carey, director of women’s hockey for USA Hockey and general manager of the 2015 U18 Team.

“Fans will have a unique opportunity to see the best women athletes in the world,” she continued.

“This facility and the world-class nature of the event contributes to the growth of women’s ice hockey,” she continued.

“It’s an opportunity for girls to see where they can go and motivate them to that next level,” she explains.

The competition starts with 400 girls selected by USA Hockey at District camps, those selected move on to a development camp and from there those selected move on to a series in Lake Placid. From the top 30, the roster will be finalized in late Fall.

In 1998 there were 19 Division I Collegiate programs for women and 20,000 registered female players. Today there are 35 DI programs and 66,000 registered players and the numbers continue to grow.

Returning with another gold medal from the 2014 Paralympics, Team USA will continue to play for the gold at the Worlds in Sledge Hockey.

Only two players come from New York and both are from Western New York. Adam Page and Paul Schaus are sporting that Gold Medal and will return to the ice in the World Championships. But before that they, along with other members of the 2014 Team, will be in Buffalo for the Tryout Camp in July at the Northtown Center, Amherst.

“Adam and Paul are two different people. Adam was born with his disability and Paul lost his limbs serving in the military in Afghanistan,” said Team USA Coach Jeff Sauer. “Yet, they have meshed together as a team.”

“I love each one like a son and I don’t treat them any differently than I treat any hockey player,” explained Sauer. “We use the same drills, the same words between periods. The bottom line is they are athletes.”

“I tell them every day they are better athletes than some of the players in the National Hockey League,” said Sauer. “And they are. They can do things that an NHL player can’t.”

Sauer explained that Page can shoot with both hands and score from either side of his body, which a guy in the NHL can’t.

Sauer also wants fans to know that this is a physical game and these guys hit each other.

“This is a tremendously exciting sport and fun to be around.

“I love to stand back and watch them play,” said Sauer.

City of Buffalo Mayor Brown concluded the day with promising that the City of Good Neighbors will roll out the hospitality to the athletes, their families, coaches and fans.

“Thank you USA Hockey,” said Brown. “We are anxiously looking forward to 2015.”

Sledge Hockey Update

0
Following an extensive review of the current state of the sport and major
success at Sochi 2014, IPC Ice Sledge Hockey has revealed the competition cycle
and the qualification criteria for the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games.

A fair and robust method of qualification progression has been created
throughout the next quadrennial period for all participating teams which looks
as follows:

- Year 1 (2015): World Championships A-Pool; World Championships B-Pool
- Year 2 (2016): World Championships C-Pool; Regional championships
- Year 3 (2017): World Championships A-Pool; World Championships B-Pool;
Qualification Tournament
- Year 4 (2018): Paralympic Winter Games; World Championships C-Pool

The USA enter the next Paralympic cycle as the two-time Paralympic champions,
while Canada are the reigning world champions and South Korea will automatically
qualify for PyeongChang 2018 as the host nation's team.

Keith Blase, Chairperson of the IPC Ice Sledge Hockey Sport Technical Committee,
said: "We are very excited to enhance the IPC Ice Sledge Hockey competition
calendar for the next Paralympic cycle, which includes a World Championships
C-Pool to include more developing nations in the sport and expand its reach."

The World Championships A-Pool and B-Pool have been moved to years one and three
in the Paralympic cycle based on input from participating nations at the last
IPC Ice Sledge Hockey Sport Forum.

In 2015, the World Championships A-Pool will bring together the world's top
eight teams and in the same year the B-Pool event will include the next six best
teams.

Joining Canada and the USA in the A-Pool currently are Russia, Czech Republic,
Norway, Italy, Japan and Germany. The B-Pool at the moment includes South Korea,
Sweden, Great Britain, Estonia, Slovakia and Poland.

The bottom two finishers from the A-Pool will be relegated to the B-Pool for the
2017 edition of the event, and the top two finishers from the B-Pool will be
promoted to the A-Pool for 2017.

The last-place team at the World Championships B-Pool will be relegated to a new
C-Pool tournament, which will be created and run in the second and fourth years
of each quadrennial.

The C-Pool tournament, to begin in 2016, will provide the opportunity for
emerging and newly practicing countries to take part at a competitive
international level, contributing to the growth and development of IPC Ice
Sledge Hockey worldwide. The top finisher from the C-Pool tournament will be
promoted to the B-Pool for the next event.

Potential regional championships may also be included in the competition
calendar for 2016.

Then in 2017, the top five finishers from the World Championships A-Pool will
directly qualify for PyeongChang 2018. The bottom three teams from the A-Pool
event and the top three teams from the B-Pool event will compete at the
Qualification Tournament for PyeongChang 2018 that same year.

The top two or three finishers at the Qualification Tournament - depending on
the status of the Paralympic host nation's team - will move on to PyeongChang
2018.

A World Championships C-Pool will also take place during the same year as the
Paralympic Winter Games.

During the last Paralympic cycle, IPC Ice Sledge Hockey continued to grow, as
two countries started up new national programmes, the Ottobock Equipment Loaner
Programme was launched and a growth in media coverage brought the likes of The
New York Times, NBC, BBC, Russia Today and the Associated Press to the Shayba
Arena in Sochi.

IPC Ice Sledge Hockey now hopes to build off that success during the next
Paralympic cycle, increasing the number of athletes and nations practicing the
sport as well as international awareness.

Canisius Names Assistant Coaches for Coming Season

0

Trevor Large, a veteran assistant coach in Atlantic Hockey for eight seasons, and Scott Moser, a former forward with the program, have been named assistant coaches with the Canisius College hockey team, announced by head coach Dave Smith on Monday.

“It’s an exciting time for Canisius hockey and the addition of Trevor and Scott to our coaching staff adds another level to that,” Smith said. “Trevor is an experienced coach who arrives on campus after working at a prestigious college in Army. During his time in West Point, he was able to develop strong recruiting links in the United States, including in the USHL, and as a Canadian, he now also has the opportunity to utilize his strong ties in our natural footprint of Ontario. We’re thrilled to be able to welcome him, his wife, Molly, and their son, Brody, to Western New York.

“It’s also great for the program to be able to add an alum in Scott to the staff. Scott has been associated with the team for nearly a decade and he will be able to draw from his experiences as a student-athlete at Canisius and continue to raise the bar for the program. It’s an exhilarating time for the Western New York hockey community with the addition of the HARBORCENTER and as a native of the area and alum of Canisius, it’s great to see that excitement that Scott will be able to bring to the program.”

Large spent the last six seasons at Army, serving as the program’s assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. During his time with the Black Knights, Large worked with all facets of the program – forwards, defensemen, power play and penalty kill – helping coach six all-conference performers and three selections to the league’s all-rookie team.

A native of Brampton, Ontario, Large also served as the team’s video coordinator at Army.

Prior to joining the Black Knights, Large spent two seasons at American International College from 2006 to 2008. At both Army and AIC, Large led the programs’ recruiting efforts, which included each team’s first-ever recruits from the highly-regarded USHL.

“I am extremely excited to be joining the Canisius program,” Large said. “Over the last several years, I have watched the stellar job that Coach Smith has done and how hard his team has played. As an assistant coach of a competing school, the success has been tough to watch. I now can’t wait to get started and assist in those efforts of building a team that consistently competes for league championships. Between the HARBORCENTER, the core of returning players and a strong recruiting class, great things are happening at Canisius and I am looking forward to being a part of it.”

Large played four seasons at Ferris State from 2000 to 2004. He totaled 33 points, 19 goals and 14 assists in 129 career games, helping the Bulldogs to the 2003 CCHA regular-season championship and first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.

Moser returns to Buffalo after spending the 2013-14 season at St. Lawrence as Director of Hockey Operations with the women’s team. With the Saints, Moser coordinated video breakdown, while also helping the coaching staff with scouting and practice sessions. In addition, Moser served as Assistant Golf Coach in his one year at St. Lawrence.

A two-sport athlete at Canisius, Moser captained the Griffs during the 2011-12 campaign. He appeared in 134 career games with 59 points, 23 goals and 36 assists. A two-time recipient of the team’s Dr. David B. Dietz Award as a player who shows both athletic and scholastic dedication, Moser was a nominee for the Hockey Humanitarian Award in 2011 and the Derek Hines Unsung Hero Award in 2012. He was also a four-year letterwinner with the golf program at Canisius.

“I’m extremely excited to be back at Canisius,” Moser said. “To be coaching Division I hockey in my hometown is an opportunity I’m very thankful for. It’s great to see how much this program has grown over the years and I’m looking forward to being part of a new era of Griffs Hockey at HARBORCENTER.”

The duo joins a Canisius program that has advanced to two-straight Atlantic Hockey Championships, including the team’s first conference title and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2013. The Griffs are set to enter a new era this season when they begin play at the HARBORCENTER – a $172 million multipurpose hockey and entertainment complex that sits directly across from the First Niagara Center.

New York Cities Announce NEW NSJHL Franchises for Coming Season

Three Franchises Added for 2014-2015 Season

2014-04-03

One franchise has also changed ownership.

Northern States Junior Hockey League is proud to announce the addition of three teams for the 2014-2015 season.

The Roc City Royals of Rochester, New York, is a new franchise that will join the NSHL. Owner and general manager Jack Slade started the franchise with the goal that it become development program to move players to college hockey or a higher level of juniors.

“I’d seen the league and thought it was a competitive league to play in,” said Slade of his decision to enter his team in the NSHL. “We wanted to have a team in the Rochester area that could be a great place for development.”

Slade has been coaching hockey since 1974 and also has a strong background in recruiting.

“Mainly this (team) is to give local kids a place to play competitive hockey and advance them,” he said. “The response has been good and recruiting has been going very well.”

The Lockport Express, of Lockport, New York, is another franchise entering the NSHL next season.

“We are very excited to be joining the NSHL for the 2014-2015 season. The league provides high quality Junior A hockey and is extremely well run,” said Head Coach and General Manager Frank Vecchio. “We are looking forward to the challenge of building a quality program that provides players the opportunity to advance to the college level and beyond, while also providing the opportunity for a quality education. We fully expect to be an asset to the NSHL.”

The Central New York Stallions will be another new addition for 2014-2015. Team owner Michael Beavis also owns the Syracuse Stampede of the NSHL. Their home rink will be at Morrisville State College.

“Part of the reason for forming the Stallions was the opportunity to help the NSHL brand by creating a solid foundation for an Eastern and Western division for the league,” said Beavis. “Along with the other new members in the West, Lockport & Roc City Royals, the Stallions will join the Syracuse, Wilkes-Barre and Jersey Shore which should be a very competitive division.”

Beavis said the team will build quality relationships will local college coaches.

“I think with the success that the Stampede has had over the past few seasons, the Stallions will be able to add to that with the NSHL franchise actually running out of a SUNY school campus,” said Beavis. “We are currently interviewing several quality coaches for the head coach job with the Stallions. Even though the team has been a bit low key over the past couple moths, there has been quite a buzz in the Central New York area over the formation of the team and its relationship with several area college coaches.”

Finally, the Maine Moose sold their franchise to new owner Jeff Dupere, who has changed the name to the Maine Timberwolves. Dupere worked with the Moose last season and is excited to own a team in the NSHL.

“I’ve been in hockey my entire life and I felt like I was in a position to take that step and purchase a team to work with them and better them, and help them move on in education and in hockey,” he said.

Dupere, whose father was an Olympic hockey player, played major juniors in Canada and had to retire due to injuries. Ever since then, he has mainly worked with hockey players in a strength and condition aspect. This will be his first time coaching juniors.

“I spent this past season working with the Moose and training them and I really enjoyed watching them grow and working with them,” he said. “I’m excited to bring my philosophies to the game and my expertise in training off and on the ice. I’m excited to work with this agr group and turn them into better young men and better hockey players.”

U.S. Men’s National Team Tops Finland, 3-1,
at 2014 IIHF Men’s World Championship
Tyler Johnson Nets Two Goals, Including Game Winner;
Team USA Ends Preliminary Round Tuesday Against Germany
MINSK, Belarus – Tyler Johnson (Spokane, Wash./Tampa Bay Lightning) scored  twice, Brock Nelson (Warroad, Minn./Univ. of North Dakota/N.Y. Islanders) had a single goal and goaltender Tim Thomas (Flint, Mich./Univ. of Vermont/Dallas Stars) turned in a 22-save effort to help the U.S. Men’s National Team hold off Finland, 3-1, in its penultimate preliminary-round game at the 2014 International Ice Hockey Federation Men’s World Championship here today.

“I was really happy to see our guys compete the way they did tonight,” said Peter Laviolette, head coach of the 2014 U.S. Men’s National Team. “I thought it was our strongest game of the tournament. Defensively, we were fairly tight and we made the most of our chances offensively. We realize that it was an important game for both teams.”

Nelson’s goal was scored on the first shift of the contest after the puck took an auspicious bounce off the glass. The play started when Seth Jones (Plano, Texas/Nashville Predators) fired the puck hard into the zone from center ice and Finland goaltender Pekka Rinne left his net to try and stop it. Before the puck got to Rinne, it deflected off a stanchion and right to Nelson at the doorstep, where he tapped it in to give the United States a 1-0 lead.
Both teams enjoyed limited offensive chances in the middle frame, thanks largely to sound defense at both ends and timely saves by Thomas and Rinne.
After a few big stops by Thomas in the early portion of the third period, Johnson scored from high in the zone at 6:42 to give Team USA a 2-0 advantage. Craig Smith (Madison, Wis./Univ. of Wisconsin/Nashville Predators) fed a pass in the neutral zone to Johnson, who walked to the middle of the ice just above the circles before threading a shot through a Finland defender and over Rinne’s glove. Jones recorded his second assist of the game and seventh of the championship on the play.
The Finns broke through to make it a 2-1 game with 3:14 remaining in the third stanza when a shot from the top of the right circle bounced off a stick in front of Thomas and found its way to the back of the net. Johnson scored an empty-netter in the final minute to close out the U.S. win.
The U.S. Men’s National Team (3-1-0-2) will conclude its preliminary-round schedule Tuesday (May 20) against Germany at 5:45 a.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network.
