Sabres Take Reinhart as Second Overall Pick

0

The Buffalo Sabres went with the hockey family strategy as they selected Sam Reinhart of the Kootenay Ice in the Western Hockey League with the second overall pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft held in Philadelphia.

The third son of former NHL defenseman Paul Reinhart to be drafted after Griffin (a first round, fourth overall, selection by the NY Islanders in 2012) and Max, (Calgary’s third round selection in 2010), the 6’0”, 180 lb. center netted 105 points including 36 goals in 60 games for Kootenay this past season.

“We got the guy that we wanted,” said Sabres General manager Tim Murray. “He’s a guy that I got to see a lot since the January day I was hired in Buffalo. I made it a priority see him in the Prospect Game, follow him that week, get back to him a few weeks later and then again in the playoffs.

“He makes the players around him so much better. His hockey sense separated him from the rest of the players.”

“I’ve been preparing for this for a long time, I’ve been visualizing myself in this uniform and I’m just thrilled and ecstatic to be an impact player and a Buffalo Sabres,” said Reinhart in the media room after his selection.

“It’s (Buffalo) a young team—I’m very familiar with the organization—and I picture myself in this uniform for a long time. I’m very motivated to stick in the league next year…and make an impact.

“It’s looks like a bright future and I’m excited to start the process of stepping in there and start the process of getting better every year.”

Sabres General Manager stated publicly that he also wanted to use his extra second round selections (3) to move up for a second first round selection, but could not find a trade partner.

“I don’t know if I was close,” said Murray. “I offered teams in the late teens to the 20’s (first round draft position) two seconds and I offered one team all three seconds to for one person.”

Two New Yorkers Selected In First Round Of NHL Draft

0

New York natives Sonny Milano (Massapequa) and Alex Tuch (Baldwinsville) were selected 16th and 18th by the Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild respectively at the 2014 NHL Entry Draft held in Philadelphia.
The linemates from the U.S. National Development Team are both committed to play for Boston College this fall.
Milano scored 29 goals and 86 points over 58 games with the U-18 team in Ann Arbor this past season. The 6’0”, 185 lb. center left home at 15 years old to play midget hockey in Cleveland before his two years with the USNTDP.
“This is surreal,” said Milano in the media room after his selection. “I worked my whole life for this and to finally get it is unbelievable.
“I was a big (NY) Islander fan growing up—I had season tickets. When I was growing up, I sort of modeled my game after Patrick Kane a little bit.
Milano originally committed to play for Notre Dame, but changed to BC.
“Seeing players like Johnny Gaudreau and guys like that and playing for national championship every year. I’ve dreamed of going there my whole life—it’s kind of the local team among the top teams.”
Tuch (pronounced ‘tuck’) played Junior B hockey for the Syracuse Stars when he led the Empire League in scoring as a 15 year old. Then he too joined the National Development Program where he scored 26 points in 56 games before exploding this past season with 13 goals and 19 assists in 26 games for the U-18 team.
“This feels really good and it’s a dream come true; it’s a good experience and I’m having fun with it,” said the just turned 17 year old (May 10).
“I’m a big strong power forward, versatile, heavy shot and use my body to play all three ends of the ice.
“I just going to take it step by step and I’m really excited to go to Boston College next year and we’ll see where it takes me.”

KEADY HIRED AS WOMEN’S HOCKEY ASSISTANT COACH AT UNION

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women’s hockey program has announced the hiring of Elizabeth “Liz” Keady as assistant coach.  The announcement was made today by Head Coach Claudia Asano Barcomb.

A former standout at Princeton, Keady has spent the past two seasons as head coach for the girl’s varsity hockey team at Andover (Mass.) High School, coaching the girl’s varsity lacrosse team as well.

Keady has also directed the North Shore Vipers Select program, working with the Under-19 and Under-16 teams and conducting skills sessions for age groups Under-10 through Under-19.  Since June 2008, Keady has served as General Manager and Director of Hockey Training at the Institute of Performance & Fitness in Andover.  In this role, she worked as a personal trainer and strength and conditioning coach, developing sport specific training programs for hockey athletes, many of whom play at the Division I level.  Keady has also been an instructor at hockey camps in New Jersey and Massachusetts.

A native of Braintree, Mass., Keady played four seasons (2003-08) at Princeton, notching 38 goals, 41 assists and 79 points in 118 career games as a forward.  She was named team MVP and Most Improved Player in 2004-05, scoring a career-high 15 goals.  The same season she earned All-Hockey ECAC Honorable Mention and All-Ivy Second Team accolades.

Welcom to the RIT Class of 2018

0

Head Coach Wayne Wilson is proud to announce the RIT men’s hockey Class of 2018 on Tuesday, June 24. Seven first-year student-athletes and one transfer will join the squad, which includes four forwards and four defensemen. Six players hail from Canada, while two are from the United States.

“This is a real exciting group of newcomers, whose impact will be felt once they adjust to the collegiate lifestyle and game” said Wilson, now entering his 16th season at RIT in 2014-15. “All eight players are capable of stepping up right away and I am confident all will make a big impact.”

Forwards Mark Golberg (Ottawa, Ontario/Cumberland Grads) Max Mikowski (Cheektowaga, NY/Buffalo Jr. Sabres), Myles Powell (Courtenay, British Columbia/Cowichan Valley Capitals), and Anthony Repaci (Toronto, Ontario/Toronto Jr. Canadiens), and will look to help bolster an offensive unit that was in the middle of the pack nationally last season.

Golberg, a 5-foor-10 center, led the Cumberland Grads of the Central Canadian Hockey League in scoring during the 2013-14 season with 64 points on 32 goals and 32 assists. He scored 12 power-play goals and added three game-winning tallies. In three full seasons with Cumberland, Golberg scored 60 goals and added 73 assists for 133 points in 163 games. Former Tiger standout and Hobey Baker Award Finalist Simon Lambert, along with defenseman Brent Patry also played for Cumberland during the 2003-04 season.

Mikowski, a bruising 6-foot-3 forward, enjoyed a strong season for the Buffalo Jr. Sabres of the Ontario Junior Hockey League in 2013-14, recording 59 points on 23 goals and 36 assists, while racking up 77 minutes in penalties. In three seasons with Buffalo, Mikowski recorded 113 points on 45 goals and 68 assists to go along with 178 penalty minutes and 10 game-winning goals. He is the fourth Tiger on the 2014-15 roster to hail from Western New York.

Powell, who stands 5-foot-10, led Cowichan Valley of the British Columbia Hockey League in scoring last season, compiling 59 points on 21 goals and 38 assists. He tallied five power-play goals and two game-winners. Powell also played for the Victoria Grizzles and Alberni Valley Bulldogs, racking up 107 points on 44 goals and 63 assists in 148 career games.

Repaci comes to RIT from the Toronto Jr. Canadiens of the Ontario Junior Hockey League. The 6-foot forward led the team and was among the league leaders last season with 35 goals and 32 assists for 67 points. Repaci led the OJHL with eight game-winning goals and four shorthanded tallies. In two seasons with Toronto, Repaci recorded 126 points on 60 goals and 66 assists in 107 games.

“Mark (Golberg) can play in any situation, is a strong, two-way player, with good offensive skill,” said Wilson, who is just 18 wins shy of 300 entering the 2014-15 season. “Max (Mikowski) is a big, strong, physical, power forward who is always around the crease and net area and has a blue-collar style of play. Both Anthony (Repaci) and Myles (Powell) are very skilled, strong with the puck, strong skaters, and excellent playmakers, both of which can come in and contribute right away.

On defense, Matt Abt (Leduc, Alberta/Whitecourt Wolverines) and twin brothers Brady and Chase Norrish (Strong Field, Saskatchewan/Yorktown Terriers) will join a young, but experienced unit and look to contribute right away. In addition, Greg Among (O’Fallon, MO/Cedar Rapids Roughriders) will join the team as a transfer from 2014 NCAA Tournament participant UMass Lowell. Per NCAA rules, Among will have to sit out the 2014-15 season, but will be eligible in 2015-16 for his junior season.

Abt, who stands 6-foot-3, played the last four seasons in the Alberta Junior Hockey league, first for the St. Albert Steel and most recently with the Whitecourt Wolverines. Abt enjoyed a breakout season in 2013-14, recording 42 points on 10 goals and 32 assists in 51 games, while racking up 155 penalty minutes en route to earning Whitecourt MVP honors. In 194 AJHL games, Abt recorded 502 penalty minutes. A three-year assistant captain, Abt was St. Albert’s Rookie of the Year in 2010-11 and Whitecourt’s top defensive defenseman from 2012-14.

The Norrish twins capped off a tremendous junior career, helping lead the Yorkton Terriers of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League to the 2013-14 Canalta Cup, Western Canada Cup, and Canadian Royal Bank Cup Championship as the top Junior “A” team in all of Canada. The last RIT player to have won a Royal Bank Cup title was Andrew Favot with the Aurora Tigers in 2007.

Chase Norrish was named the 2013-14 SJHL Defenseman of the Year, leading all blue-liners in scoring with 45 points on nine goals and 36 assists. In the postseason, he added seven goals and eight assists for 15 points in 16 contests. Standing 5-foot-10, the two-time SJHL Defenseman of the Month recorded 22 goals and 62 assists for 84 points to go along with 164 penalty minutes in 169 career games with Yorkton.

Brady Norrish, Yorkton’s Defenseman of the Year in 2012-13, enjoyed a strong 2013-14 season as well, recording nine goals and 21 assists for 30 points in 54 games, while adding seven points in the postseason. In 165 career games with Yorkton, the 5-foot-10 Norrish tallied 79 career points on 22 goals and 57 assists to go along with 118 penalty minutes.

Among comes to RIT after playing the last two seasons at UMass Lowell, recording a goal and 10 assists in 40 games. The 6-foot-2 defenseman helped lead UMass Lowell to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including a berth in the 2013 Frozen Four. Previously, Among played two seasons for the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders of the United States Hockey League, scoring 10 goals and 38 points in 99 career games. Among served as assistant captain of Cedar Rapids in 2011-12 and helped lead the RoughRiders to the Anderson Cup in 2010-11.

“It is the first time I will have the opportunity to coach twins at RIT,” said Wilson. Both Brady and Chase (Norrish) led Yorkton to the Royal Bank Cup and come to RIT with great skill, grit, and toughness. Matt (Abt) is a big, tough, strong player, who can really skate well. He was one of the top defensemen in Alberta. We are happy to welcome Greg (Among) to our program and look forward to him in a Tiger uniform in 2015-16.”

The Tigers enter their tenth season at the NCAA Division I level. Last season, RIT finished with a 12-20-5 record and advanced to the Atlantic Hockey Association First Round. RIT is embarking into a new era, beginning its first season at the Gene Polisseni Center, located on the south end of campus. The building will have 4,000 seats, with additional standing room only space for a total capacity of 4,300 fans. The 2014-15 season begins on Oct. 4 with an exhibition contest against Brock University.

Syracuse Announces “The Frozen Dome Classic”

The Syracuse Crunch will host the first professional hockey game held in Syracuse University’s legendary Carrier Dome when they face the Utica Comets in the Frozen Dome Classic on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2014.

“Four years ago the Syracuse Crunch staged the first outdoor game in American Hockey League history, attended by a record-setting crowd,” said Crunch ownerHoward Dolgon. “On Nov. 22 we will once again make history by playing the first-ever professional hockey game in the iconic Carrier Dome, a facility that has hosted numerous major sporting and entertainment events. We greatly appreciate the partnership with Syracuse University and plan on doing everything we can to put on a first class show.”

The Frozen Dome Classic will add fuel to a growing rivalry between the Syracuse Crunch and neighboring Utica Comets. The Crunch will be competing in their 21st American Hockey League campaign and boast the league’s longest tenured independent ownership group. The Comets inaugural season was 2013-14.

“The Comets are not only excited, but are honored to participate on such an iconic stage as the Carrier Dome,” said Comets President Rob Esche. “We look forward to furthering our rivalry with the Syracuse Crunch, and providing the Utica community another opportunity to make American Hockey League history.”

The unprecedented day-long hockey event will also feature an NCAA Division III matchup between the Utica College Pioneers and Oswego State Lakers, local collegiate powerhouses. There will also be a Syracuse vs. Utica law enforcement charity game prior to the Crunch-Comets main event.

“We are always looking for events to place in the Carrier Dome that capture the community spirit, and this is clearly one that we believe will,” Syracuse Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl Gross said. “We have such a fantastic relationship with the Crunch and Howard Dolgon and are thrilled to host what is sure to be a spectacular day of ice hockey in one of the most unique settings in America.”

The ice rink will be set up similarly to the Carrier Dome’s basketball configuration. Using this layout, the renowned Carrier Dome can seat more than 30,000 fans. The Carrier Dome is well accustomed to hosting large crowds. Since 1983 the Dome has broken the NCAA’s men’s basketball on-campus attendance record 14 times, most recently when the Syracuse Orange hosted the Duke Blue Devils on Feb. 1, 2014, and 35,446 fans attended.

The largest crowd to watch an indoor professional hockey game in the United States is 28,183 when the Crunch’s NHL affiliate, the Tampa Bay Lightning, hosted the Philadelphia Flyers in a Stanley Cup Playoff game at the Thunderdome on April 23, 1996. The American Hockey League indoor attendance record was set at the Greensboro Coliseum on January 18, 1997, when 20,672 fans saw the Carolina Monarchs face the Kentucky Thoroughblades.

“The Frozen Dome Classic is a tremendous opportunity to showcase our community,” said Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney. “The Mirabito Outdoor Classic the Crunch hosted in 2010 was great and we look forward to another successful event in November.”
Tickets will go on sale to the general public at 10:00 a.m. on June 24 and will range in price from $20 to $50. Discount ticket prices are available for groups of 15 or more people. Tickets can be purchased either in person at the Syracuse Crunch Office located at the War Memorial Arena on 800 South State Street in Syracuse, by calling (315) 473- 4444 and at all Ticketmaster Outlets. Click here for more ticket information.

The Carrier Dome, a 49,262 seat stadium which opened in 1980, is the largest domed stadium in the Northeast United States and is the largest structure of its kind on any college campus in the country. Along with hosting Syracuse University basketball, football and lacrosse games, the “Loud House” has also held concerts featuring famous musical artists such as U2, Billy Joel, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen and the Rolling Stones.

Gallagher joins William Smith ice hockey coaching staff

William Smith College Ice Hockey Head Coach Jaime Totten recently announced that Kate Gallagher will join her staff as an assistant coach for the Herons inaugural season. Gallagher comes to Geneva after serving as an assistant coach at Plymouth State and Union College.

As the defense and goalie coach at Plymouth State, Gallagher’s main responsibilities also included recruiting, analyzing game film and mentoring the student-athletes.

“Kate has a terrifically warm, friendly, comedic personality which will develop an instant rapport with the student-athletes,” said Totten. “The team will feel very comfortable speaking with and learning from her. Kate balances her personality with the ability to teach, effectively getting her coaching points through to her student-athletes.”

Gallagher gained additional coaching experience as the head coach of the Plymouth State club ice hockey team and worked as the goalie coach for Holderness Preparatory School, the Plymouth Youth Hockey Association and the Laconia Youth Hockey Association. Following her graduation with a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience from Union in 2012, Gallagher spent a year as a volunteer assistant for the Dutchwomen.

The four-year varsity letter winner holds the Dutchwomen career records with a 2.61 goals against average and a .924 save percentage in her four years on the team. Gallagher also posted Union single season records with a 2.15 goals against average and a .937 save percentage in her senior season. She sits third on the all-time Union list for saves with 1,700. Gallagher served as an alternate captain as a senior, and was voted the George Morrison Most Valuable Player in both her junior and senior years.

Gallagher earned New York State Championships in 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2006, playing for the Syracuse Stars, now known as the Syracuse Nationals, finishing third in the nation in 2004.

“A successful student and goaltender at Union College, Kate has a strong understanding of the values of a liberal arts education and a passion for hockey,” said William Smith Director of Athletics Deb Steward. “We are excited to have Kate join Head Coach Jaime Totten in establishing the foundation and culture of William Smith ice hockey.”

Ice hockey will be William Smith’s 12th varsity sport when it begins play in 2014-15. The Herons will compete in the ECAC West against Chatham, Elmira, Neumann, Buffalo State, Cortland, Oswego, Plattsburgh, Potsdam, and Utica.
