0

ALBANY, N.Y. – ECAC Hockey has announced the winner of this year’s Player of the Year award, and Morgan Barron (Cornell University) has been honored.

This is the first time since 2005 (David McKee) that a Big Red player has been honored with this award. He’s the first Cornell skater to earn the award since Joe Nieuwendyk in 1987.

His +17 plus-minus rating was third amongst ECAC Hockey forwards, while his 14 goals was tied for fifth. The junior was the offensive leader of a Cornell team that spent much of the season ranked No. 1 in the nation, and ranked second in scoring margin (2.03).

The New York Rangers draft pick is now a 2x First-Team All-League selection, and was named a top-ten finalist for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award earlier this week.

The remainder of this year’s ECAC Hockey men’s major award winners will be announced throughout the week.

Wilkinson Awarded AHA’s Sportsman Of The Year

0

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Senior alternate captain Alex Wilkinson of the Army West Point hockey team has been named the Atlantic Hockey Association Individual Sportsman of the Year, announced by the league on Wednesday.

“Wilky is such a natural fit for this award,” said head coach Brian Riley. “He plays the game the right way and he respects other players and officials. It’s amazing with the amount of ice time that he plays that he has only had one penalty in the last two years. It’s a true testament to his character and why he is such a worthy recipient.”

Wilkinson is the third Black Knight to claim the individual sportsmanship honor in program history and the second in three seasons. Ryan Nick earned the award in 2017, while Chris Garceau was also a recipient in 2005.

The Raleigh, N.C., native is one of the team’s alternate captains this season. Arguably one of Wilkinson’s greatest accomplishments is his ability to stay out of the penalty box. After playing in 67 games, the senior recorded just one penalty in the past two seasons and zero during his senior campaign.

Wilkinson was one of seven Cadets to play in all 33 games this year. He scored four goals, two on the power play, and dished out nine assists for 13 points. Wilkinson posted 50 blocks as well.

The defenseman finishes his career with 17 goals and 59 assists for 76 points in 132 games played. Wilkinson also had eight power play goals and four game-winners. The senior graduates with just nine penalties in his four years wearing an Army sweater.

TROY, N.Y. – The All-ECAC Hockey teams have been announced from men’s hockey and two Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes have been recognized. Will Reilly and Owen Savory have both been named to the Second Team, along with Connor McCarthy (Clarkson University), Curtis Hall (Yale University), Odeen Tufto (Quinnipiac University) and Jack Drury (Harvard University).

A senior defenseman and captain from Toronto, Ont., Reilly played in all 34 games for the Engineers this season, recording eight goals and 14 assists for 22 points. The team-leader in plus/minus at +14, he also led the club in power play points with nine, on four goals and five assists. Averaging a team-high 2.53 shots per game, he had 27 blocked shots and was assessed six penalties for 12 minutes.

Reilly anchored a defensive unit that has allowed 2.55 goals per game overall and just 1.86 during ECAC Hockey play. RPI’s penalty kill of 86.0% ranked second in the league and 12th in the country. In 22 conference games, the former Nanaimo Clippers standout had six goals and 10 assists for 16 points, with a team-high +17 rating.

Offensively, Reilly recorded five multi-point efforts, including a three-point game against St. Lawrence on November 8 at the Houston Field House. He had a goal and two assists in that contest, as the Engineers won, 6-2. A finalist for the conference’s Top Defensive Defenseman, he ranked second in goals, fourth in plus/minus and fifth in points among league blueliners.

As a junior, Reilly notched five goals and 13 assists for 18 points in 33 games. Limited to just 19 league contests, he had one goal and eight assists for nine points. In 2017-18, he collected seven goals and 13 assists for 20 points in 37 games.

In 139 career games at RPI, Reilly notched 22 goals and 46 assists for 68 points.

A sophomore from Cambridge, Ont., Savory started 24 games for the Engineers this season, posting a 13-9-2 record, with a 2.06 goals against average and a .932 save percentage and five shutouts – the most by an RPI netminder since Nathan Marsters ’04 had five in 2003-04.

In 18 ECAC Hockey contests, Savory went 11-6-1 with a 1.74 goals against average and a .941 save percentage and four shutouts. The former St. Catharines Falcons standout led all conference goalies in both save percentage and shutouts, while ranking third in goals against average, fourth in winning percentage (.639) and seventh in total saves (479).

Nationally, Savory ranked second in shutouts, seventh in save percentage and 12th in goals against average. His five shutouts were one shy of the school record of six, which is held by Laing from the 1999-00 season.

Savory was a two-time Hockey Commissioners Association and ECAC Hockey/MAC Goaltending Goalie of the Month (January and February) and a four-time ECACH Hockey/MAC Goaltending Goalie of the Week.

In 49 career games at RPI, Savory is 18-24-5, with a 2.26 goals against average and a .929 save percentage, which both rank first in program history. His six career shutouts are fourth all-time.

RPI posted a 17-15-2 overall record, this season, including a 13-8-1 mark in ECAC Hockey play, earning its first bye in the conference tournament since the 2012-13 season. The Engineers’ 17 victories are the most since 2015-16.

NYS Hockey Tryout Information Update

Attention – State Tournament Information
URGENT UPDATE!!

2020-2021 Tryout information –

March 14, 2020

To all NYSAHA Association Presidents:

As everyone should be aware, earlier this week USA Hockey canceled its National Tournaments and NYSAHA cancelled its State Tournaments. With these tournament cancellations in mind, this letter is to notify everyone of the dates by which tryous may begin.

Based on this, tryouts for the 2020-2021 season can begin on the following dates (subject to change, if required). There will be no pre-signing of players prior to these dates, whether participants in or outside of your Association. The tryout dates are as follows:

• All age classifications youth and girls 12U and below can start April 22, 2020;

• All age classifications youth and girls 14U and above, whether Tournament-Bound or Non-Tournament Bound, can start April 20, 2020; and

• If your Section has rules that require tryouts to start later than the above dates, the Section rules will apply.

It should also be noted that pursuant to USA Hockey Rules, if the above tryout starting dates are violated, the Association may be subject to being sanctioned. Those USA Hockey sanctions are as follows –

• For Tier I, the USA Hockey Youth Council has agreed that the violation of the recruiting and tryout rules by a Tier I team shall result in that team being ineligible to be recognized as a Tier I team and ineligible for National Championships for the season for which it was holding tryouts.

• For Tier II, the USA Hockey Youth Council has agreed that the Affiliate has the authority to subject the coach, team, program and/or responsible administrators to appropriate discipline, or ineligibility of the team or coach for violation of the recruiting and tryout rules by a Tier II team. The Youth Council has strongly recommended that the appropriate discipline for a Tier II team’s violation of the recruiting and tryout rules is to prohibit said team from being recognized as a Tier II team and making said team ineligible for the National Championships for the season for which it was holding tryouts.

• For both Tier I and Tier II, if a team is determined to be ineligible for National Championships, the Youth Council further recommends that players that were not subject to improper recruiting or tryouts should be released and (subject to roster deadlines) free to join an eligible team.

Finally, Associations should take note that coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions have been imposed by the State of New York, banning a gathering of more than 500 people in a facility. This means that a multi-rink building is limited to 500 people the same as a single-rink building. This may affect how tryouts are scheduled for the facility to remain within the 500 person limit. Other limitations, including local restrictions, may also apply. Please be mindful of this.

Thank you for your attention to these tryout considerations.

Yours in Hockey,

New York State Amateur Hockey Association, Inc.
