After helping the Canisius College hockey team to a victory against first-place Robert Morris on Sunday, junior defender Geoff Fortman (Crystal Lake, Ill.) was named Atlantic Hockey Defensive Player of the Week, announced by the conference on Tuesday.

Fortman keyed a 6-2 win against the Colonials with the first multi-point contest of his 76-game career. The junior assistant captain registered three assists in the winning effort, while also helping lead a defense that held the nation’s top-ranked scoring offense at the time to its lowest goal output of the season.

Overall, Fortman has registered five assists in 17 games this season. In 76 career contests, the Crystal Lake, Illinois, native has totaled 13 points with one goal and 12 assists.

The weekly accolade is the first for Fortman during his career.

Fortman and the Griffs return to action with a road contest against nationally-ranked Merrimack. Canisius is set to battle the 20th-ranked Warriors on Sunday for a 4:05 p.m. start.
