ITHACA, N.Y. — Senior Jess Brown scored with 7 minutes, 36 seconds left in the third period, and Cornell women’s hockey battled back to secure a 2-2 tie with fifth-ranked Clarkson on Friday afternoon at Lynah Rink.

Junior Hanna Bunton opened the scoring for Cornell (8-8-4, 4-5-4 ECAC Hockey) midway through the first period on a chance in transition. Senior Taylor Woods set up the play by causing a turnover on the forecheck, and the Big Red took an early lead despite being outshot in the opening 20 minutes.

But Clarkson (19-3-3, 7-3-3) tied the game a few minutes later with a shorthanded goal. Amanda Titus created the play from behind the Cornell net, teeing up Olivia Howe cutting down the slot for a one-timer into the net. The Golden Knights then took the lead 4:59 into the second on Rhyen McGill’s unassisted goal after a turnover as the Big Red tried to break through the neutral zone.

Sophomore Erin O’Connor and freshman Pippy Gerace teamed up to create a chance early in the third period. Gerace stole the puck along the left boards and fed O’Connor in the slot. O’Connor’s shot bounced off Clarkson goaltender Shea Tiley, and Gerace curled around the back of the net and tried to bury the rebound, but Tiley covered up.

The third period was short on five-on-five hockey, with seven penalties called over the course of the frame. The Big Red held the Golden Knights’ power play scoreless, but Clarkson’s 91.1 percent-effective penalty kill also stymied Cornell on nine man-advantage chances.

Paula Voorheis made 34 saves to anchor the Big Red, which pulled even on Brown’s ninth goal of the season. Hanna Bunton gained the zone on the left wing and dropped a pass to Kaitlin Doering. She slid a shot through traffic toward the far post, which Brown tapped underneath Tiley.

After a Clarkson chance that was broken up with under a minute to play in the overtime period, Bunton and Doering broke away the other direction, heading into the Golden Knights’ zone on a two-on-one. Bunton slid the puck to Doering at the hash marks, but Doering’s shot went just high.

Cornell returns to action at 3 p.m. Saturday vs. St. Lawrence at Lynah Rink.
