Utica Women Defeat Ancaster Avalanche in Shutout!

Utica, NY (10/25/14)- The Utica College women’s hockey team defeated the visiting Ancaster Avalanche, 7-0 in an exhibition match up Saturday afternoon.The Pioneers picked up where they left off last season and controlled the momentum from the drop of the puck. Seven different players scored on the day, including returners Victoria Pelton (Sterling Heights, MI/Belle Tire), Gabrielle Schnepp(Northville, MI/Belle Tire), Morgan Reed (Fort Myers, FL/Cushing Academy), and Kelsey Dowdall (Smiths Falls, ONT/Nepean). Sophomore Halle Donoho, who sat out last season with an injury also got her name on the score sheet with the seventh goal for the Pioneers. Newcomers Carlie Smith and Emily Holtshouser fit right in as they netter their first collegiate goals.

Schnepp, Reed, and Donoho each finished with two points on the day. Senior captain Nicole Schwartz (Danville, CA/San Jose Sharks) tallied an assist on the game’s opening goal, while freshmen Allison Buch, Taylor Osowski, Nicki Clover, and Kelly Critzer also added helpers on the day.

Marissa McNamara (Camillus, NY/Lysander Lightning), Amanda Lupo, and Keira Goin (Dobbs Ferry, NY/Hotchkiss School) each saw 20 minutes of action in goal and combined for the 11-save shutout.

The Pioneers open regular season play Nov. 8 and 9 with a home-and-home series against ECAC West newcomer, William Smith College. UC will travel to Geneva, NY on Saturday, Nov. 8 for a 4 p.m. game. Both teams will then travel to Utica for a 3 p.m. face off on Sunday, Nov. 9.
