Statesmen Down Nazareth, 6-2

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College hockey team used a three goal second period to down Nazareth 6-2 in an ECAC West game played tonight in The Cooler. The Statesmen extended their unbeaten streak to 10 games.

Hobart improves to 14-2-2 overall and 7-1-0 in the ECAC West. Ten different Statesmen logged a point in the victory. Sophomore Jordan Haskell (Tooele, Utah) produced two goals. Junior Jon Neal (Encinitas, Calif.) and first-year Cam Shaheen (North Andover, Mass.) each chipped in two assists. Sophomore Frank Oplinger (Sewickley, Pa.) played the first 51:42 and made 36 saves. Junior Tim Keegan (Lexington, Mass.) came in for the final 8:18 and stopped four shots. The Golden Flyers fall to 5-9-4 overall and 2-5-1 in conference play.

The Statesmen took a 2-1 lead in the first period. Hobart struck first 6:25 into the game. Robbins, who now leads the Statesmen with 13 goals this season, pushed his shot underneath the Nazareth goalie’s pads after a crossing pass in front from sophomore Vincent Russo (Jackson, N.J.). Just 23 seconds later, Marcus Moles put the Golden Flyers on the scoreboard. With 6:20 left in the first, junior Carl Belizario (Dorval, Quebec) took advantage of a power-play, finding the back of the net after passes from Neal and junior Bobby Sokol (Belle Vernon, Pa.).

Hobart took control of the game in the second period with three unanswered goals. Forty-six seconds in, junior Andrew Silard (Greenwich, Conn.) scored from deep on the left side. At 4:26, Haskell tallied his first goal of the game after a pass from Shaheen. Wolf made it 5-1 at 8:30 with his seventh goal of the season. Junior Nick Bingaman (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) and Neal earned the assists.

At 11:06 into the third, Haskell struck again, this time off passes from senior Mac Olson (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) and Shaheen. With 4:47 left in the game, John Power scored Nazareth’s second goal, sliding the puck under the pads of Keegan. Packy Jones and Scott Dawson were credited with the assists.

The Statesmen went 1-for-4 on the power play and killed all six of the Golden Flyers’ power-play chances. Each team logged 42 shots. Ed Zdokshek played the opening 51:42 and stopped 30 shots. Brandon Lane played the final 8:18 and stopped six shots.

The Statesmen will be back in action next weekend, Jan. 29 and 30, when they host Utica for two ECAC West games in The Cooler. On Friday the game is set for 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday the teams will meet at 4 p.m.
