RYE, N.Y. – Sophomore Sarah Sinning (Southold, NY/National Sports Academy) scored two goals as the Manhattanville College women’s ice hockey team came from behind in the third period to win their home-opener 3-2 over UMass Boston.

Manhattanville (2-2-0 overall, 2-2-0 NEHC) battled UMass Boston (2-4-0 overall, 2-2-0 NEHC) for two periods, with neither team able to gain a significant advantage over the other. Through the first two periods, the Beacons held a slight advantage in shots on goal over the Valiants 19-18, with neither team able to find the back of the net.

The Valiants and Beacons proved to have plenty of excitement stored up for the third period, as the teams scored a combined five goals in the final frame. Manhattanville jumped on top six minutes into the period, when Sinning scored her first of the game to give the Valiants a 1-0 advantage.

The Beacons wasted no time responding, leveling the score less than three minutes later when Jenny Currie was able to beat junior goaltender Olivia Drew (York, Maine/Portland Jr. Pirates) for her first goal of the season. UMass struck again on the power play just over a minute later, this time with Samantha Fallon finding the back of the net to give the Beacons a 2-1 advantage.

With 7:40 remaining in the final period, freshman Kat Reilly (Holbrook, N.Y./Boston Shamrocks (JWHL)) found the back of the net on a wraparound shot for her first career goal, tying the score at 2-2. Two minutes later Sinning put the Valiants on top for good, taking a pass from sophomore Maeve O’Brien (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) and beating Beacon goaltender Casey Schaejbe for the game-winning goal.

Drew proved to be solid in net for the Valiants once again, making 26 saves to pick up her second victory between the pipes this season for Manhattanville.

The Valiants return to the road next weekend when they travel north to Vermont to take on Castleton University Friday night at 7:00 P.M.
