William Smith College junior Maggie Salmon was named the ECAC Women’s West Goalie of the Week following a 2-0-0 opening weekend in goal for the Herons.

William Smith opened its 2016-17 campaign with a pair of wins over Salve Regina in Middletown, R.I., this past weekend. On Friday, the Herons rallied with three goals in the third period to knock off the Seahawks 4-1. The win was just the second time in program history William Smith won after surrendering the first goal. The next day, junior Rebecca Begley scored with 1:11 left in the third period to lift the Herons past Salve Regina 1-0.

Salmon started in both games and stopped 60 of the 61 shots she faced. In Friday’s game, she stopped 23 shots, including the first 18, 11 of which came in the first period when the Seahawks outshot William Smith 11-4. On Saturday, Salmon recorded 37 saves on her way to posting her third career shutout. She stopped 13 in the first period, seven in the second, and 17 in the third period. Through two games, Salmon owns a .984 save percentage and a 0.50 save percentage.

The Herons will return to the ice this weekend, Nov. 5-6, when they open the home portion of their schedule against No. 1 Plattsburgh. The game will serve as the ECAC West opener for both teams.
