BUFFALO SABRES SELECTED TO DEVELOP THE WEBSTER BLOCK

0

Mayor Brown applauds the $123 million economic development project that will transform the prized city-owned parcel into a hockey-themed destination,

creating 350 new jobs

BUFFALO– Mayor Byron Brown was pleased to announce today the selection of HARBORcenter Development, LLC (the development company affiliated with the Buffalo Sabres) as the preferred developer of the Webster Block. He also released the term sheet, outlining the plan to create two new ice rinks, which coupled with the existing rink, makes this facility the “first of its kind” in the United States.  The project also calls for a hotel, retail, a restaurant and new parking, for a total estimated project cost of $123 million.

“This is an exciting day for Downtown Buffalo and its waterfront,” said Mayor Brown. “I want to thank HARBORcenter Development, LLC and the Buffalo Sabres for putting before us a remarkable proposal that will re-make this prime piece of city-owned land, and bring tremendous economic impact to the community.”

“We are proud to be named the preferred developer of the Webster Block,” said Terry Pegula, owner of the Buffalo Sabres. “This project will further enhance the current development at Canalside and in the process, create a destination attraction to draw hundreds of thousands of people to Buffalo’s waterfront on a yearly basis. Canalside has seen a rebirth the past few years and we expect our project to act as a catalyst for future development on the waterfront.”

The Webster Block, a 1.7 acre city owned site located directly across from First Niagara Center, is considered a prized downtown parcel due to its location in downtown Buffalo, its proximity to Canalside, two major sports venues, and the Peace Bridge. The HARBORcenter Development project is expected to provide approximately 1,500 construction jobs.  Once complete, the facilities are expected to create 350 full-time jobs, and generate $4.1 million in state and local taxes, $48 million over the next ten years.

“The City received two excellent and competitive proposals for the Webster Block, and there was strong support for each plan,” said Mayor Brown.  “In the end, the Selection Committee recommended the project it believed would be best for the City of Buffalo, and selected HARBORcenter Development and the Buffalo Sabres.”

Two major development proposals were submitted to the City of Buffalo after Mayor Brown issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) in April, 2012, encouraging developers to put forth their best ideas to create something great downtown Buffalo.

HARBORcenter Development, LLC (the development company affiliated with the Buffalo Sabres) submitted a $123 million hockey-themed proposal that included plans for two new ice rinks, (one with seating capacity for at least 1,800 people, and the other with seating capacity for at least 200 people) a hotel, retail and a restaurant. Ellicott Development Company led a team that proposed a $64 million plan that included office space, retail, a hotel and apartments.

A selection committeeof Mayor Brown’s Senior Management Team, led by Brendan Mehaffy, Executive Director of the City of Buffalo Office of Strategic Planning, was named to review the proposals and submit a recommendation to Mayor Brown.  A group of community leaders, including business owners and professionals, block club representatives and clergy, were also identified to work with the selection committee to review proposals and submit a recommendation.

On July 27, 2012, both Ellicott Development Company and HARBORcenter Development presented their proposals to the selection committee and community representatives.  The presentations were recorded and played repeatedly on public access television and made available on the City of Buffalo’s website. The public also submitted comments in response to the presentations viawebsterblockrfp@city-buffalo.com.

Following the presentations, the two development companies were invited back individually to meet with the selection committee and clarify any information.  HARBORcenter Development met August 7th.  Ellicott Development Company met August 8th.On August 20, 2012, both Ellicott Development Company and HARBORcenter Development returned to present additional information to the selection committee and seven community representatives.

When all the factors were added up, including the size of the overall $123 million investment and the purchase price for the land, the HARBORcenter Development proposal gained favor. In addition to building the new facilities, the Buffalo Sabres agreed to the following terms:

o   Pay $2 million for the Webster Block

o   Seek city residents for post-construction jobs

o   Agreed to use local workforce for construction and meet 25% minority and 5% female hiring goals

o   Agreed to 25% minority business and 5% women business enterprise participation goals

o    Pay Living Wage for employees of ice rink and parking ramp

o   Attain the highest reasonable environmental standards for building

o   Expand parking in the building to make attendance at Canalside events more convenient for the public

o   Construct a facility that attracts new hockey-themed events/tournaments, and creates new opportunities for other special events

o   Committed to public, community and youth hockey use

o   Receive additional community input through the charette process

HARBORcenter Development also committed to the start of construction in March 2013, with the projected completion of the parking ramp, retail and ice rinks by the beginning of the 2014 Buffalo Sabres Hockey Season.  The hotel is projected to be completed by spring of 2015.   The Mayor’s Administration will inform the Buffalo Common Council today about the preferred developer and provide them with the term sheet that better describes the process.

Mayor Brown concluded. “I want to thank the Selection Committee and community representatives for their input.  I had confidence in the selection process from the start and knew that the committee would choose the project they felt was best for the city.  We look forward to working with HARBORcenter Development and the Sabres Organization on this exciting shared initiative that will strengthen the city and region, and continue the remarkable progress in downtown Buffalo by reinventing this prime piece of city owned land.”

Marshall Takes Helm at Manhattanville

0

After six years with the Manhattanville men’s hockey program both as a player and then as an assistant coach, Arlen Marshall ’10 will take over as the third head men’s hockey coach in Manhattanville history for the 2012-13 season, as announced by Director of Athletics Keith Levinthal on Monday.

“I am both thrilled and thankful for this opportunity to lead the Manhattanville men’s hockey program,” Marshall said. “I want to thank Keith and the entire search committee for this chance of a lifetime, and I look forward to building on the foundation of this nationally recognized program. Our student-athletes will have goals set and will strive toward them in the classroom, community, and on the ice so that they are strong representatives of the college.”

The hiring retains a sense of continuity for the program, as Marshall has spent the last two years as the top assistant coach under both program architect Levinthal and Eric Lang, who resigned in June after one season as head coach. A member of the Valiant hockey family since arriving on campus as a freshman in 2006, Marshall will continue to lead the Manhattanville program – this time in a head coaching capacity – while also looking to increase alumni support and build on the tradition of one of the school’s most successful programs.

“I’ve known Arlen since he was 18. As a student-athlete, he was a three-year captain and part of four of the most successful seasons in this program’s history, while he has also done a tremendous job as an assistant coach over the last two years,” Levinthal said. “At this point in time, I thought it would be best to have a head coach who understands the complexities and challenges of coaching hockey at Manhattanville. Arlen is the best person to guide this program going forward.”

In his last two years as an assistant coach, Marshall immersed himself completely in the day-to-day operations of the Valiant men’s hockey program, helping to coordinate practices, scouting and video work while also planning travel itineraries and budgets. In addition, he recruited highly sought-after student-athletes and managed team academic affairs throughout the season as well.

His first coaching role came after completing one of the most prolific on-ice careers in Valiant history. A two-year co-captain who wore a letter in three of his four seasons, Marshall completed his career as one of just three Manhattanville players to reach the 100-point plateau thanks to 38 goals and 64 assists in 105 career games. He graduated third in career points, fourth in assists and sixth in goals all-time at the school, while also departing second in games played and sixth in power-play goals for a career.

In his senior season, Marshall set new career highs with 26 assists and 35 points to help lead the Valiants to the ECAC West Conference Tournament championship, one of three ECAC West Tournament titles that Manhattanville achieved in his four years with the team. The Valiants also reached a pair of NCAA Tournaments and finished all four seasons in the top-10 in the nation according to USCHO.com.

A native of Quill Lake, Saskatchewan, the forward graduated from Manhattanville in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in communications and political science. He also received his master’s degree in sports business management from the school in 2012.

“In addition to the academics and athletics, Manhattanville boasts numerous qualities that make it unique,” Marshall added. “This campus has been an important part of my life for the past six years, and I am happy to be able to continue to call it home.”

Marshall will begin his seventh season with the program – and first as a collegiate head coach – on November 2 in the first of a two-game series at ECAC West Conference foe Hobart. The Valiants take to the ice at Playland Ice Casino for the first time the following weekend, when the squad hosts ECAC West newcomer Nazareth for two games on November 9 and 10 at 7 p.m. Both games – along with all men’s hockey home games this season – will be streamed live online at GoValiants.TV.

U18 Men’s Selects Suffer Loss to Russia in Game 1

0

The U.S. Under-18 Select Team was unable to overcome a tough Russia squad as it fell in a shootout, 2-1, in its opening game of the 2012 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. U.S. goaltender Thatcher Demko(San Diego, Calif.) made 38 saves before the game entered the shootout.

“We played hard and competed in a hard-fought game,” said Matt Herr, head coach of the U.S. Under-18 Select Team. “We’re going to get our rest, make small adjustments to our game and get ready to go again tomorrow night.”

Scoreless after the first period, Team USA was able to get on the board first. Justin Bailey (Williamsville, N.Y.) converted on the power play, slipping a rebound past Russian netminder Igor Serebryankov. The U.S. held onto its 1-0 lead until late in the third, when Russia was able to tie the game.

In overtime, both teams saw multiple opportunities to capture the win. The best chance came when Adam Erne (New Haven, Conn.) was awarded a penalty shot with 1:14 left in the extra stanza. Unable to convert on the shot, the game was then sent into a three-round shootout to determine the winner.

Team USA shot first, with Sean Malone (West Seneca, N.Y.) missing just wide of the net on a deke move. Russia’s Sergei Tolchinski was up next, shooting hard and low to beat Demko. Anthony DeAngelo (Sewell, N.J.) fired a shot wide of the net and Russia’s Pavel Buchnevich lost control of the puck before getting his shot on net. Erne took the last shot for the U.S and tried to slide the puck past Serebryankov on his backhand, but the Russian netminder clinched the win with a pad save.

The U.S. will return to action in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament on Tuesday (Aug. 14) when it takes on the host nation in Breclav, Czech Republic.

NU Adds Seven Players to Roster for 2012-12

0

by Niagara University Sports Information Office

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara men’s hockey team and head coach Dave Burkholder have announced seven new additions to the Purple Eagle family as the class of 2016.  Joining the Purple Eagles as freshmen for the 2012-13 season will be Dan Kolenda, Hugo Turcotte, Matt Dineen, TJ Sarcona, Matt Chiarantano, Mike Conderman and Nick Cecere.

“As a staff we are all really pleased with the seven student-athletes that have chosen Niagara University and our program as their college of choice,” Burkholder said.  “My staff is very diligent and hardworking in this area and these players will all be impact players on the ice thanks to their recruiting efforts.”

Dan Kolenda, a sizeable winger at 6-foot-4 from Superior, Wisc., scored 30 goals, 65 assists and 95 points in 111 games with the Carleton Place Canadians (CCHL).  After tallying 20 goals and 37 assists last season, Kolenda was named to the 2011 Robinson Division’s CCHL All-Star team.

“At 6-foot-4, 230 lbs., Dan brings size and skill to our program,” assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Tim Madsen said.  “With Dan’s big frame and skill level, he will have the ability to wear down other teams’ defenseman.”

Hugo Turcotte comes to Monteagle Ridge after spending the last year with the Grande Prairie Storm (AJHL).  He scored a team-high 23 goals, including four game-winning tallies and nine power-play goals and added 33 assists in 58 games.  Turcotte, a native of Laval, Quebec City, had played a year of junior A with the Foxboro South Shore Kings (EJHL) in 2010-11 where he had 52 points (21 goals, 31 assists) in 45 games.  He also played a year at Winchendon Prep in Massachusetts in 2009-10 where he accumulated 27 goals and 26 assists and was the team’s scoring leader and Most Valuable Player.

“Hugo brings speed, skill and playmaking ability to our program,” Madsen said.  “He has been a proven point producer at every level he has played at, and we fully expect that to translate to his college hockey career at Niagara.”

Matt Dineen has the potential to be a rock on the blueline for the Purple Eagles, having spent the last four seasons with the Newmarket Hurricanes (OJHL).  The 6-foot-1 captain steadily improved his point total each season, recording 14 goals, 59 assists for 73 points in his four-year stint with the Hurricanes.  His 25 points in the 2011 season was tied for second best among defensemen on the club.  The Newmarket, Ont. native has been a leader on and off the ice for the team as he was awarded the OJHL Humanitarian of the Year Award which is given to the player who has made the most notable contribution to his community, including, but not limited to charitable work, school visits and extra-curricular off-ice activities.

“Matt is a very simple, smart defenseman that plays with an edge,” Madsen said.  “His competitiveness and ability to defend will make him a valuable penalty killer.  Matt also brings tremendous character to our program as he was the recipient of his junior league’s Humanitarian of the Year Award last season for his efforts to give back to the community.”

T.J. Sarcona could play a pivotal role on the Purple Eagles special teams.  Playing with the Amarillo Bulls (NAHL) the past two years, Sarcona scored 23 goals and added 35 assists for 58 points in 56 games this past season.  The West Islip, N.Y. native collected four power play goals and added three more shorthanded.  He was plus-36 and totaled 155 shots, helping the Bulls to the 2011 NAHL South Division Title.

“TJ is a very competitive, two-way forward who comes to Niagara after a very successful junior career,” Madsen said.  “He is hard to play against and will help our penalty kill unit immensely.”

Matt Chiarantano, the 5-foot-9 defender has scored 18 goals, 80 assists and 98 points in 182 games in the OJHL, split between the Orangeville Crushers, Aurora Tigers and the Georgetown Raiders.  He had a career-season in 2011-12 with the Raiders, scoring six goals, 27 assists and 33 points in 43 games.  The Bolton, Ont. native was also a member of Canada East’s squad that participated in the World Junior A Challenge in 2010.

“Matt is a smooth, puck-moving defenseman,” Madsen said.  “He is junior tested and will bring depth to our defensive core.”

The Purple Eagles have also added two strong transfers this season in Mike Conerman and Nick Cecere.

Rochester, N.Y. native, Mike Conderman, hopes to bring his tenacious offensive play to Dwyer Arena after having spending last year with the University of Massachusetts-Lowell River Hawks.  Prior to his stint with the River Hawks, Conderman suited up for 57 games with the Muskegon Lumberjacks (USHL) where he scored 11 goals, 21 assists for 32 points.  He tallied 31 goals and added 41 assists for 72 points in 31 games for Cushing Academy in Massachusetts.  His efforts landed him on the All-New England Team as an East Team all-star.

“Mike is a competitive, two-way forward who can play in all situations,” Madsen said.  “He has the ability to make plays and creates chances for himself and his line-mates through his hard work.”

Nick Cecere, a defenseman from Des Moines, Iowa, played for the Michigan Tech Huskies last season.  Cecere played the 2009-10 season with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs (BCHL) where he scored two goals, added assists and picked up 39 penalty minutes before joining the United States Hockey League’s Lincoln Stars the following season.

“Nick is a simple, stay-at-home defenseman that brings experience and character to our program,” Madsen said.  “He also brings an element of size and toughness to our defensive core.”

Niagara begins its 17th season at Dwyer Arena when it plays host to Bowling Green State University on Oct. 6.  Fans can purchase season tickets for the 2012-13 season by either calling 716-286-TIXX (8499), visitingwww.PurpleEagles.com/Tickets or by emailing tickets@purpleeagles.com.
