Dancing in Jane Austen's shoes

JANE AUSTEN FESTIVAL AUSTRALIA

www. janeaustenfestival.com.au
14-17 April 2011
Info: 0409817623
St Johns Church Hall, Constitution Ave, Reid, Canberra ACT

The Jane Austen Festival Australia is entering its 4th year. Although it still takes place over three days in the middle of April, and is still centered around the beautiful historic St John’s Church in Reid, the program has grown from a single stream to three simultaneous streams, making use of every hall and room in the church complex. This year’s festival will include concerts in the church, Napoleonic era re-enactors on the lawns and 22 presenters in the program.

The festival is a celebration and exploration, not just of Jane Austen’s novels, but of the culture of her time. As well as dedicated sessions on Austen’s work, there are sessions on music, dance, costume, food, theatre and men’s military history. Top presenters from around the country will offer a variety of talks, as well as hands-on sewing workshops, feet-on-floor dance workshop, and panels inviting audience participation. Though casual dress is fine, there’s lots of opportunity to costume-up for outdoor promenades, evening dinners and balls.

In an age when popular culture would have us believe that anything before DVDs is ancient history, that it’s only other people who have a cultural heritage, and that its more important to be outrageous, groundbreaking and cool than considerate, accomplished or gentle, many are discovering the satisfaction that can be had by better understanding the past and bringing forward from it elements that appeal.

In this regard, the age of Jane Austen has proved particularly attractive to modern day young men and women. Whereas the fashions of the 18th and late 19th century might seem weird or cruel, those high-waisted gowns and squire-like tails from Jane Austen’s age (the first decades of the 19th century) seem romantic and elegant. Where the social order of the 18th century seems alien, and that of the late 19th century torn and sooted by the industrial revolution, that of Austen’s years seems more egalitarian. Where the dancing of the 18th century is imagined to be courtly and stiff, and that of the late 19th century to be black-tie and formal, that of the Austen’s day seems to be just plain fun. The age’s accessibility is further enhanced, of course, by the timeless themes, engaging characters, involving plots and good humour of Jane Austen’s novels, and by the many recent screen adaptations of those novels.

One of the main interests of Jane Austen’s day, and indeed of Jane Austen herself, was dancing, and dance workshops and balls will fill the main hall, all day, every day of the festival. Dance teacher and historian Dr John Gardiner-Garden makes joining in and learning easy and fun, and participants soon realise why it is observed in Pride and Prejudice, that ‘To be fond of dancing was a certain step towards falling in love’, why it is noted in Persuasion that ‘thirteen winters’ revolving frosts had seen [Elizabeth] opening every ball of credit which a scanty neighborhood afforded’, and why in Northanger Abbey —our feature novel for the 2011 Festival— Catherine Morland’s clever dance partner Mr Tilney says: ‘I consider a country-dance as an emblem of marriage. Fidelity and complaisance are the principle duties of both; and those men who do not chuse to dance or marry themselves, have no business with the partners or wives of their neighbours’.

Festival participants’ first taste of Regency era dance invariably leaves them wanting more, just as it is remarked in Emma that: ‘It may be possible to do without dancing entirely. Instances have been known of young people passing many, many months successively without being at any ball of any description, and no material injury accrue either to body or mind; – but when a beginning is made – when the felicities of rapid motion have once been, though slightly, felt – it must be a very heavy set that does not ask for more.’

The 2011 Jane Austen Festival runs from 14-17 April. Full program and presenter details are available at http://www.janeaustenfestival.com.au, where tickets can also be booked. For more information on any of the above phone Aylwen or John Gardiner-Garden on (02) 6281 1098 or 0409 817623.

Change your clock, change your smoke alarm battery this April

0

ACT Fire Brigade, together with Duracell, are urging all ACT residents to change their smoke alarm batteries when they change their clocks back at the end of Daylight Saving on Sunday, April 3.

Each year more than 50 families across Australia lose a loved one as a direct result of a house fire, with the majority of deaths occurring between 9pm and 6am when the household is asleep. During sleep the vast majority of people do not register the smell of smoke – in fact during the deeper cycles of sleep they don’t register smells at all.

Smoke alarms are essential to wake people if a fire breaks out; they give household members an early warning and time to evacuate safely – but only if they work.

“When asleep our sense of smell is greatly diminished. When we enter the deeper stages of the REM sleep cycle, our brain dramatically slows in receiving input from the olfactory nerves (our sense of smell) which is why people don’t wake to the smell of a burning fire,” said sleep scientist Chris Bunney of Home Sleep Studies Australia.

“When asleep, we may not smell smoke but we will hear a smoke alarm. A working smoke alarm can literally mean the difference between life and death,” added Bunney.

Fire authorities recommend the use of photo electric smoke alarms and say that not changing your battery and failing to maintain your smoke alarm can be just as deadly as not having one at all.

ACT Fire Brigade Chief Officer Paul Swain says: “I see devastating house fires every year. In fact, one in five Australians experience a house fire. Sadly, not everyone gets out safely. In some cases this is due to smoke alarms not working properly as they have been disconnected or have a flat battery. Worse still, some homes don’t have a smoke alarm installed at all.

“Only working smoke alarms help to save lives, so we strongly encourage all ACT households to use the end of Daylight Saving as a reminder to change their clock and change their smoke alarm batteries. We recommend using high quality, long-lasting 9V alkaline batteries such as Duracell to ensure year round protection.

“All homes, whether permanent or holiday, need to be equipped with fully functioning smoke alarms – this includes caravans and cabins. Maintaining alarms and replacing batteries is also essential, particularly at properties that are not primary residences.

“It is especially important to replace batteries now as we move into the winter months, because the increase in usage of heaters and other electrical equipment leads to more house fires. Together with Duracell, the Fires Services message is simple; Only Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives.”

ACT Fire Brigade recommends you to:
•Test your smoke alarm once per month to ensure the battery and the alarm sounder are operating and clean with a vacuum cleaner annually to remove particles that will affect smoke alarm performance
•Replace the battery annually with a long-lasting Duracell alkaline battery
•Install smoke alarms in positions that will wake all occupants in the home and give them time to evacuate. For example, installing the alarms outside each sleeping area, with additional smoke alarms installed inside bedrooms where doors are closed at night and along evacuation routes if bedrooms are located upstairs.

Smoke alarms are designed to protect you while you are sleeping. Visit www.changeyourbattery.com.au or your local fire service authority for more information on where to place smoke alarms in your home.

In 2010, ACT Fire Brigade attended nearly 165 household fires in ACT.

The Change Your Smoke Alarm Battery campaign is supported by Duracell.

On track to provide better care

0

The Australian Childhood Foundation together with Barnardos are running a new initiative in the ACT, in light of the increasingly complex needs of abused and traumatised children and young people requiring out of home care.

On Track ACT, a specialised therapeutic foster care program, is the first initiative of its kind to run in Canberra and according to Australian Childhood Foundation CEO, Dr Joe Tucci, “it can turn the lives of children around”.

“Children and young people traumatised by abuse and neglect need specialised support and care to assist them to recover from the devastating effects of what they have experienced.”

The program aims to provide foster carers with knowledge to better understand traumatised children and the skills to help them provide a home environment and approach to parenting that is sensitive to their abusive pasts.

“We have been running similar programs in other states for more than 10 years and have seen the amazing difference that such programs can make in the lives of children that many had given up on.”

A child or young person in ‘On Track ACT’ must be subject to a court order, be aged between 8-14 years, exhibit a range of complex needs or challenging behaviours, have a history of placement instability and require a long term placement with no plans for restoration.

People interested in joining the program as foster carers can help to make a significant difference in the lives of abused and traumatised children according to Dr Tucci.

“There are so many traumatised children in the ACT waiting for families who are able to understand them and respond to their needs in a way that helps undo the harm caused to them by abuse and neglect”

Foster Carers who join the On Track program become part of a ‘care team’, who meet regularly to ensure both they and child are receiving all the support they need.

“With training and support, carers are able to create a healing environment at home in the way they understand, care for and parent the child.”

Referrals to ‘On Track ACT’ are made via the Office for Children Youth and Family Support Placement Review Committee. Once deemed eligible, On Track ACT will commence placement linking.

To become an ‘On Track’ carer, or to find out further information, contact Shannon Bradbury from Barnardos on 02 6228 9500 or [email protected].

The program is delivered in partnership by the Australian Childhood Foundation and Barnardos and is funded by the ACT government.

NO CARBON TAX

0

With debate running high over Ju-liar Gillards Carbon Tax. There is an opportunity for those of us who see it as another knife in the back of Aussies from a Government determined to bring our great Nation down to show some solidarity by attending rallies in all Capital cities culminating with a rally at Parliament House Canberra on Wednesday 23rd March at 12 noon. Further details of the rallies and an electronic petition to sign are available at http://www.stopgillardscarbontax.com/.

I believe this tax will completely destroy our last industries. When Labors Keating gave us the level playing field in manufacturing he brought our great Nation to its knees by destroying the industry here. No other Nations play by that level playing field .This Carbon tax will do likewise by putting the boot into all of our few remaining industries while no other countries will follow.

This is a time where Aussies need to care enough to unite to save any resemblance of the great country we grew up in before Gillards Government does anymore damage and we become even bigger importers of food and coal. And here was me thinking we would feed the world.

We often ask what can one man do? Here is your chance you can sign the petition and attend one of the Rallies in State Capitals or Canberra on Wednesday 23rd March

Good selection of films

0

By Rama Gaind

The topics are wide-ranging, but there’s a good crop of films screening in Canberra.

Check them out because there is something to suit everyone’s taste.

The Adjustment Bureau

Here’s a question: do unseen forces manipulate us or do we have it in our power to control our destiny?

This captivating thriller starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt will leave you wondering about the right answer.

David Norris (Damon) is an ambitious politician on the brink of winning a seat in the US Senate who meets Elise Sellas (Blunt), a beautiful contemporary ballet dancer, and starts falling in love with her.

Is it fate that has other plans?

David realises that mysterious men are conspiring to separate them. He learns that the men of ‘The Adjustment Bureau’ are doing everything in their power to keep them apart. Why?

He faces overwhelming odds with a decision to either let her go or defy fate and be with her. He aims to beat the system.

This is a taut thriller, well assimilated and features wonderful chemistry between the two lead actors. However, watch carefully to pick up the threads of the film.

Directed and written by George Nolfi (writer of Ocean’s Twelve and co-writer of The Bourne Ultimatum), this film is good quality viewing.

Rango

Johnny Depp is the voice of Rango, an ordinary chameleon who accidentally winds up in the town of Dirt, a lawless outpost in the Wild West in desperate need of a new sheriff.

Rango thinks he is the right lizard for the job.

Director Gore Verbinski co-wrote his first animated feature with John Logan and James Byrkit which is a clever tribute to the western genre.

It also features the voices of actors Isla Fisher, Bill Nighy, Abigail Breslin, Alfred Molina, Harry Dean Stanton, Ray Winstone, Ned Beatty and Timothy Olyphant.

Rabbit Hole

Powerfully truthful, this story touches the soul as you watch the grief suffered by the parents of a young boy who dies after being hit by a car.

Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart are the happy couple whose life is turned upside town. Based on a play by David Lindsay-Abaire, the film also stars Dianne Wiest.

Poignant and painful.

Conviction: Based on true events, this is a convincing drama about  a strong-willed woman (played by Oscar- winner Hilary Swank) who believes in her brother’s innocence and puts herself through law school and then gets him out of jail.

Total commitment.

Unknown

Watchable thriller as Liam Neeson fights memory loss and gets caught up in espionage.

Nicole Kidman stars in 'Rabbit Hole'.
Johnny Depp is the voice of 'Rango'.

'Gnomeo and Juliet': an entertaining blend

0
Soundtrack for 'Gnomeo & Juliet' has been released by Universal.

Film and CD review

By Rama Gaind

Gnomeo and Juliet is a mischievous, but entertaining 3D animation that shifts action from William Shakespeare’s drama to the backyard with some very likeable garden ornaments.

Getting caught up in a feud between neighbours, garden gnomes Gnomeo (voiced by James McAvoy) and Juliet (Emily Blunt) have to overcome many obstacles.

They do so in style, despite lawnmower races and plastic pink flamingos.

Watching the ornaments come ‘alive’, fall in love and conduct war over the back fence makes for some merry viewing.  They are a delightfully zany collection.

What’s more they have fun to songs by Elton John.

The 14-track Gnomeo & Juliet soundtrack (Universal Music) features nine new and classic songs by the prolific song-writing team of Elton John and Bernie Taupin.

The key tracks include two new songs Hello Hello and Love Builds a Garden. The remake of Crocodile Rock is sung as a duet with Nellie Furtado.

Some standout tracks include Don’t Go Breaking My Heart (a duet with Kiki Dee) Bennie and the Jets, Your Song, Tiny Dancer and Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting.

The album also has selections from James Newton Howard and Chris Bacon.

Sir Elton rightly says: “The film is a big love story and very funny”. It also has musical numbers that blend in beautifully!

Happy birthday Canberra

0

By Rama Gaind

Sounds of music are alive in the nation’s capital as Canberra celebrates it 98th birthday in 2011.

Over nine days from March 12-20, celebrations for the Canberra Festival include a host of fun things from film, music, theatre, exhibitions, dance and sporting events to a spectacular array of activities and some new night-time experiences.

The city is bursting with colour this autumn.

There’s plenty to see and do from listening to international artists singing live in concert, watching a mass of giant hot air balloons in all shapes and sizes floating in the sky, visiting markets, seeing special architectural lighting and attending numerous wine festivals.

As part of Enlighten, Canberra Tourism’s new festival, the foreshores of Lake Burley Griffin will be a dazzling venue for an evening of hits from legendary American musician George Benson, INXS, Chris Isaak and Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons .

A hot air balloon experience is novel. Pictures do paint thousands of words, but the breathtaking views you get of the nation’s capital from high in the sky could leave you, surprisingly, at a loss for words!

The picturesque scenery on a crisp morning could well be beyond your wildest dreams. The fleeting moves are an experience for the senses, not forgotten, but long treasured. Bursts of activity on the ground and in the air add to the excitement.

The balloons are launched from the forecourt of Old Parliament House as part of the Canberra Festival Balloon Spectacular. They provide a thrilling backdrop to Canberra’s iconic attractions.

Fly with the company who started it all: Balloon Aloft has been flying over Canberra since 1986 after starting the Canberra Balloon Festival.

The event makes for a perfect family outing complete with entertainment, activities and delicious breakfast every morning of the festival.

Spectators will enjoy watching the balloons slowly expand to reveal their shape, before passing smoothly across the sky.

Pilots begin laying out and inflating their balloons from 6.30am on the lawns of Old Parliament House before they ascent into the sky.

This event is one of a kind, as Canberra is one of the few places in the world where balloons can fly at such close proximity to government offices and buildings of national significance.

Another event is the glamour and excitement of racing in the capital which takes on a special meaning at the Black Opal Stakes meeting.

Why not also take the opportunity to visit the National Gallery of Australia, Parliament House and Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House as they host special after-dark experiences. Soak up the history and culture of other world-class attractions including the Australian War Memorial, National Portrait Gallery, National Museum of Australia, the National Library and Questacon.

Now you will see Canberra in a whole new light.

For more details, visit http://www.events.act.gov.au/?/canberrafestival/event/63

Nostalgia surrounds The Atlantis in Dubai

0

By Rama Gaind

It has been the season for awards: the Oscars, the Golden Globes, the AFI accolades and one can’t help but reminisce about some of the sparkling gala events of recent years.

One of them was the opening of the spectacular hotel – The Atlantis, The Palm in Dubai.

It goes something like this…

An all-too-brief stopover in Dubai in the early 1990s left a desire for a longer stay – and the world’s only seven-star Hotel Burj Al Arab had not even been completed!

Now there’s another luxury hotel which opened in spectacular style last month as Dubai disregarded the worldwide economic crisis with the grand opening of the $1.5 billion hotel The Atlantis, The Palm.

It is South African billionaire, hotel and gambling tycoon Sol Kerzner’s Atlantis resort and also performing at the $20 million party was Australia’s Kylie Minogue.

More than 2000 world celebrities were invited to the event where a spectacular fireworks display was unveiled by Indian actress and former Miss World Priyanka Chopra.

The 28-year-old dazzled in a figure-hugging gold-yellow floor-length satin gown with a single jewelled shoulder, vertically pleated bodice and bandage torso.

Accessories included a chunky watch, teardrop earrings, golden heels and a glittery box clutch bag.

The fireworks display, designed and executed by the Grucci’s, lit up the 43km of the palm- shaped shoreline and illuminated the entire island with more than 100,000 specially-designed pyrotechnic devices.

Hollywood actors

Labelled “party of the decade”, the event was attended by Bollywood highflyers including Rani Mukerji, Preity Zinta, Mallika Sherawat, Bipasha Basu, John Abraham and Arjun Rampal.

Hollywood stars included Robert de Niro, Charlize Theron, Mischa Barton and Wesley Snipes, singers Lilly Allen and Janet Jackson, Shirley Bassey and catwalk model Yasmin Le Bon.

A leading international developer and operator of destination resorts, The Atlantis was created by Kerzner International Holdings Limited. The stunning new 1,539-room resort, which first welcomed guests in September 2008, is made up of two pale rose towers, which are linked by a bridge which houses a $35,000-a-night suite that has said to have a long waiting list.

The Dubai hotel is inspired by the original Atlantis that Kerzner built in the Bahamas, but is not an average 5-star hotel. The new lavish hotel is something quite extraordinary and the world has now come to know of its glittering entry on the world stage.

Atlantis, The Palm, in the enviable location atop the crescent of The Palm Jumeirah, is redefining tourism in Dubai as it is the area’s first integrated entertainment resort.

Guests are bound to be transported into a dazzling, imaginative world.

The resort encompasses a 46 hectare site with 17 hectares of water themed amusement at Aquaventure, extensive fresh and saltwater pools and lagoon exhibits, an open-air marine habitat with 65,000 types of sea life, along with an enormous whale shark, that swim in 11 million litres of water. There’s also a seemingly endless stretch of beach, luxury boutiques, numerous dining choices including four celebrity chef restaurants, an exciting nightclub, a spa and fitness club and 5,600sqm of meeting and function space.

Indian actress Priyanka Chopra at the opening of the $1.5 billion Atlantis, The Palm hotel in Dubai, UAE.

Major attraction

Being one of Asia’s major tourist destinations, Dubai is a sight to behold with astonishing artificial islands and palm-fringed beaches, sand dunes, theme parks and historic ruins.

Referred to as the ‘Venice of the Gulf’, it offers tourists a remarkable choice of sightseeing and recreational opportunities.

A must on your sightseeing tour is the Dubai Museum with its fine collection of life-size figures and galleries depicting Arab houses, marine life, desert and date gardens are a must.

Other highlights include Al Fahidi Fort, Grand Mosque, Sheikh Saeed Al-Maktoum House, Heritage Village and Jumeirah archaeological site.

Fervent efforts will now have to be made to stay at the Hotel Burj Al Arab which dominates the Dubai coastline and was designed to resemble a billowing sail of 321 metres. Of course, equal time also needs to be spent at Dubai’s ultimate fantasy hotel – The Atlantis!

Can a dream become reality?

Landmarks of China, and the Bollywood connection

0

By Rama Gaind

There is a rich tapestry of monuments, landmarks and buildings in China, but one can’t ignore the Bollywood connection which is now very easy to define.

Time needs to be taken first to enjoy the best-known tourist attractions including the Great Wall of China, the Temple of Heaven, Tian’anmen Square, ruins of the Old Summer Palace and the World Heritage sites of the Forbidden City and the Ming Dynasty Tombs. However, don’t forget the many other countless temples, cathedrals, mosques, museums, parks and relics of bygone ages.

India’s first Hindi film to be shot on location in China was Chandni Chowk to China starring Akshay Kumar and Deepika Padukone. Released in 2009, this is an action-comedy about a lowly Indian chef who is mistaken for the reincarnation of a fabled Chinese warrior.

It also stars Hong Kong action cinema expert Gordon Liu, a veteran of martial arts films and Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill series.

Directed by Nikhil Advani it was Hollywood studio Warner Brothers’ first Bollywood movie that’s meant to be entertaining.

The film came as tentative steps were taken for greater co-operation between the two nations. The first China film festival was held in New Delhi in 2008 amid talks of possible future joint cinematic ventures.

What’s more Bollywood films are becoming increasingly popular for Chinese movie buffs. Perhaps, they are rediscovering India through its colourful fashions and the romance of music and dance?

Whether you are in Guangdong, Nanchang, Shanghai or Beijing you are bound to meet Indians sightseeing, Indian restaurants or items in a store which remind you of home.

While in Jiangxi Province, channel surfing uncovered Aishwarya Rai Bachchan speaking in Chinese in Provoked – now that was an odd experience!  Remember this 2007 UK-based English film directed by Jag Mundhra with a musical score by A.R. Rahman? It also stars Naveen Andrews, Miranda Richardson, Robbie Coltrane, Nandita Das and Steve McFadden. The film is based on the true story of Kiranjit Ahluwalia who killed her abusive husband.

Before Kiranjit’s appeal hearing the Southall Black Sisters brought her plight to the media’s attention by organising rallies for her freedom. She is ultimately freed by the judicial system in a landmark case called ‘R v Ahluwalia’, which redefined provocation in cases of battered women in the UK.

Pirate copies of Bollywood blockbusters like Dhoom 2 sell cheap, especially in Guangdong Province. If you sell upto 10 DVD copies a day, it’s considered a ‘good day’s’ trading. Engage in some deft bargaining and you could come up a winner. Even CDs of film songs are sold by hawkers at open markets. I’ve been told that finding an Indian VCD in Kunming near Yunnan University campus is not unusual.

However, one needs to be careful when it comes to getting a guarantee that a DVD and a CD is an original or a VCD is good copy. That’s a risk you have to take for paying bargain prices.
