Hobart Plays to Tie With Nazareth

0

The No. 9 Hobart College hockey team played through 65 minutes to a 4-4 tie with Nazareth tonight in an ECAC West game played in Rochester, N.Y. It’s the second straight tie for the Statesmen who are now 1-0-2 both overall and in the conference. The Golden Flyers are 1-1-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the ECAC West.

Junior Bronson Kovacs (Sault Ste Marie, Ontario) led Hobart with a goal and an assist. Junior Brad McBride (Lone Tree, Colo.) chipped in two assists. Chris Murray scored twice for Nazareth. Ben Blasko and Jordan Ciccarello both produced a goal and an assist for the Golden Flyers.

With 2:30 left in the first period, Chris Murray put Nazareth up 1-0. Blasko earned an assist on the play. Just 46 seconds into the second period the Golden Flyers went up 2-0 on a power-play goal by Ciccarello. Tom Seravalli and Mark Zavorin were credited with the assists.

Hobart took over the momentum for the middle of the second period, scoring three straight goals. Nazareth was called for a five-minute major penalty and then for another two-minute cross-checking penalty. In the 5-on-3 that followed, Kovacs put the Statesmen on the board at 9:01 in the second. He blasted a one-timer that bounced off the post and into the back of the goal after passes from first-year Jon Neal (Encinitas, Calif.) and McBride.  While still on a 5-on-3, sophomore Ben Gamache (Longlac, Ontario) made it 2-2 with his power-play goal. Kovacs set up the play. With 1:33 left in the second, first-year Carl Belizario (Dorval, Quebec) notched his first collegiate goal to put Hobart up 3-2 during a 4-on-4.

With 1:11 remaining in the second and just 22 seconds after Hobart had tied up the game, Blasko answered for the Golden Flyers with the teams still 4-on-4, tying the game at 3-3. Murray and Ciccarello logged the assists.

With 3:51 left in the third period, Murray produced his second goal of the night to put Nazareth up 4-3. Hobart pulled its goalie for an extra-attacker and with just 24 seconds left on the clock, sophomore Mac Olson (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) knotted the game at four for the Statesmen. Junior Ryan Michel (Camillus, N.Y.) and McBride registered the assists.

The Statesmen held a 3-1 advantage in shots in the extra five minutes, but could not find the game-winning goal. Hobart recorded a 44-21 lead in total shots. The Statesmen were 2-for-8 on the power play, while the Golden Flyers went 2-for-5. Sophomore Lino Chimienti (Montreal, Quebec) played 64:22 in goal for Hobart and made 17 saves. Ed Zdolshek played all 65 minutes in goal for Nazareth and finished with 40 saves.

Ohio Over NU

The Ohio State Buckeyes scored a pair of third period goals within a 60-second span to pull away with a 4-1 victory over the Niagara hockey team at the Value City Arena on Friday evening.

At 18:17 of the third and the Buckeyes up 2-0, Niagara was slice the OSU lead in half as captain Ryan Rashid‘s rising, turnaround shot beat Ohio State goaltender Matt Tomkins to make it a 2-1 contest.  The Buckeyes quickly crushed any momentum the Purple and White had 10 seconds later as Max McCormick scored on a 2-on-1 opportunity, and then followed that with an empty net tally  to put the game out of reach for NU.

Niagara (1-5-1) was unsuccessful on the man-advantage, going 0-for-5 in the overall, while Ohio State (5-4-0) went 1-for-5.

“Unfortunately a really good effort in all areas of our game goes for not, but the game was up for grabs in the third period and their top line made a really good play on the power play goal that’s the difference in the game,” head coach Dave Burkholder said.  “Overall I thought it was a pretty even game.  We had a lot of great chances, but nothing in regards to second chance opportunities so we will have to improve on that tomorrow to have a chance.”

Neither team able to establish much flow in the first 20 minutes of the contest as the period ended with zeros on the scoreboard, and the Purple Eagles holding a 10-6 advantage in shots.  Ohio State registered the game’s first few chances, but as the period wore on, NU was able to break up the Buckeyes’ attack; not allowing its B1G opponent to sustain any pressure.

The Bucks came inches away from obtaining the lead with a little over one minute remaining in the frame, but OSU could not capitalize on a pair of great chances in close.  The initial shot by McCormick was stymied by NU goaltender Jackson Teichroeb, but the follow up sharp-angled shot from Alex Szczechura clanged off the iron.

The squads traded opportunities in the second frame, but the goaltenders remained steadfast between the pipes.

The Purple and White had the period’s first golden opportunity about five minutes in.  Rashid forced a turnover in the OSU defensive zone, and slipped a feed to Chris Lochner who was waiting to the right of Matt Tomkins.  Lochner skated in on net and tried to push the puck under the pads of the goaltender, but without success.  Teichroeb had to come up big shortly after with a superb toe save off a Tyler Lyndey attempt.

During Niagara’s third penalty kill of the game with 7:20 remaining in the second, Teichroeb made several solid stops, but it was Niagara with the best opportunity while a man down as Hugo Turcotte raced in on Tomkins on a 2-on-1 with Lochner.  The sophomore opted for the shot just inside the faceoff circle, but it was waffled aside by the OSU netminder.

Tanner Fritz broke the scoreless game late in the second period, scoring his first goal of the season at 18:02.  The junior received a cross ice pass from Max McCormick and his slapshot from far out beat Teichroeb stick side.

Teichroeb held Niagara in the game throughout the final frame, making a number of key stops, however the Purple Eagles were unable to capitalize on their opportunities and fell into some penalty trouble which cost them Ohio State’s second tally of the contest.

With 7:44 remaining in regulation, Szczechura slipped a feed to an open Ryan Dzingel who settled the puck onto his forehand before walking in from the faceoff circle and slipping it underneath the outstretched glove of Teichroeb for a power play goal.

Teichroeb wrapped up the evening with 25 saves, while his counterpart made 30 stops.

Student-Athlete Spotlight: Men’s Hockey Player Brett Hope

0
By Sports Information Intern Chris Dierken
Summer vacation for college students usually means one thing: relaxing.
The summer is a time to kick back, relax, and take a breather after a long, busy school year.
But for Brett Hope, a sophomore forward on the Buffalo State men’s hockey team, summer vacation means something completely different. When he goes home for summer, it means he can finally get back to the racetrack.
Hope races in the mini-mod division at the South Buxton Raceway in Merlin, Ontario. The dirt racetrack provides Hope with the opportunity to get his mind off of school and hockey when he’s home on vacation.
“I think it helps me in that when I come back I’m focused and ready to go,” he said. “I think it helps me just relax away from hockey, and when I come back it’s way easier to just get back into it. I’m not worn out.”
As a Canadian, one might expect Hope to be playing hockey year-round. But, he said, growing up in a small, rural town, racing and motor sports were a part of the fabric of his childhood.
Hope grew up in Blenheim, Ontario, about three hours west of Buffalo. Blenheim has a population of just under 5,000, so Hope said he and his brothers would keep each other occupied by competing against each other in every way imaginable, including racing.
“We lived on a farm back home, and it was always dirt bikes and go-karts,” he said. “It was always the competitiveness that came into it with my brothers.”
From there, Hope started to get more involved, helping his dad, brothers and other dirt track racers whenever he could, until he finally got his own car five years ago.
Since then, he’s been racing every summer. This year, he finished ninth out of 25 racers in his division, including a handful of top-five finishes.
Elliot Wilton, a friend and fellow racer in the mini-mod division, said that he’s seen constant improvement from Hope on the track over the last five years.
“Ever since he got his mini-mod a couple years ago, he seems to always be improving, and he’s pretty much a consistent front-runner,” Wilton said. “He’s always there in the top five in the mix somewhere.”
Now back in school, Hope’s focus has shifted back to classes (pursuing degree in business) and hockey. Although there might not be any obvious parallels between the track and the ice, Hope said he draws on his experience from both sports to help keep himself calm.
“I think I’m pretty good at controlling myself in a big game, I just stay calm and I think that helps me in racing,” he said. “(If) you get a caution late in a race and I’m right there, I don’t get all fired up and over-drive or anything, I just stay calm and just do what I’ve been doing all race.”
For the hockey team, Hope is expected to be a consistent contributor this season after having a solid rookie year.
He had four goals and 13 assists as a freshman, good for fifth on the team in points. Hope also contributed on the penalty kill and power play units, something assistant coach Jeremiah Crowe said made him a valuable asset.
“Last year we were real happy with him,” Crowe said. “Whether he was on the first line or fourth line, he could find a way to contribute.”
Before this season, Hope was elected as an alternate captain by his teammates, thanks in large part to his team-first mentality and willingness to contribute in any way he can.
Hope said that he was surprised to be given a letter as a sophomore, and that he’s grateful that his teammates felt he was ready for a leadership role.
“It was a huge honor,” he said. “The team voted on it, and obviously I earned the respect last year from all the guys on the team, and it’s a huge honor that they think highly of me to let me be a leader on this team.”
Two games into the season, Hope has one assist and two blocked shots for the Bengals.
Hope said that he expects Buffalo State to contend in the SUNYAC this season, and possibly even win the conference.
“I expect us to be real good this year,” he said. “…Every year it’s a possibility for us to win (the SUNYAC). With all these seniors, and the veteran team we have, I see it as a possibility for us this year.”
As for his experience racing cars, Crowe said he anticipates the experience will help Hope’s growth and development on the ice.
“I think it’s good that he has another interest other than hockey that he can get away from it, dedicate time, and work towards. When guys typically have things like that, I think it helps them hockey-wise as well.”

Sophomore Kyle Baun has seven points on four goals and three assists, which is a career-high through the first eight games. Last season, the rookie led the Raiders in goals with 14 and had six points on three goals and three assists. He has four goals this year with three coming on the power play and both marks lead the team.

DOMINATING CLASS

After leading the team in total points last season, the sophomore class has been putting the goals and assists on the board. The Class of 2016 has recorded 30 points out of the 54 scored this season, which is 55 percent of the scoring output. They have scored 13 of the 20 goals this year and all top five scorers for Colgate are sophomores.

SCOUTING THE DUTCHMEN
The Dutchmen host Colgate with a three-game unbeaten streak, all coming on the road. Union tied Connecticut 2-2 before beating ECAC opponents Harvard and Dartmouth 7-2 and 4-2, respectively. Union is 3-2-2 on the season.

Kevin Sullivan has yet to score a goal on the season, but he leads Union with 11 points. That being said, the Dutchmen have had no problem scoring, with four being their magic number; they are averaging four goals per game and have four players with four goals on the campaign. Combing his four scores with five assists, Daniel Carr ranks second on the team with nine points.

The Dutchmen have scored on nine of 41 power plays (22 percent), but are 0-for-10 in conference play. All four of freshman forward’s Michael Pontarelli’s goals have come on the advantage. Union has killed 23 of their 29 penalties, a rate of 79.3 success.

Three different goaltenders have manned the crease for Union this season with Alex Sakellaroupoulos getting the most time. The freshman netminder has played five games in goal, saving 87 shots while surrendering 16 scores. He has posted a 3.46 goals against average. In both of Union’s ECAC games, Colin Stevens has played in goal, making 35 saves against four goals allowed. The junior has a 1.90 goals against average for the season.

SERIES HISTORY
The Raiders and Union have matched up 62 times prior to this weekend and Colgate has had the advantage in the series with a 38-22-2 advantage since the first meeting back in 1928-29. The two teams split the season series last year and have faced eachother 10 times in the last three years.

SCOUTING THE ENGINEERS
The Raiders travel to Rensselaer to play a team that has lost only once in its previous six games. The Engineers are enjoying a 5-2-1 start to the season.

RPI has gotten its offensive production mainly from two sources; Ryan Haggerty is the team-leader in both goals (10) and points (12) while Brock Higgs trails him in each of those categories with six goals and 11 points. No other player on the team has more than three goals, but Matt Neal and Jacob Laliberte have assisted on six and seven goals respectively, to put up eight points so far on the year.

The Engineers have scored eight times, seven of those coming from Haggerty and Higgs, in 35 chances on the power play (22.9 percent). Rensselaer has been especially stingy killing off their own mistakes. Opponents have scored on only four of 27 power plays, a kill rate of 85.2 percent.

Scott Diebold has seen the majority of the time in net for RPI, playing in seven of the team’s eight games. Diebold has made a season-high 31 saves on two separate occasions, a 3-1 win over Boston University on Oct. 18th and a 7-1 victory on Nov. 2nd over Dartmouth. He has a .946 save percentage for the season to go along with his 1.58 goals against average.

SERIES HISTORY
Rensselaer and Colgate will be playing for the 119th time on Friday night since 1915-16 and this series is the oldest in Raiders hockey history as it stretches 98 years. Colgate has played more games against Clarkson and Cornell, but those two series began in 1927. Colgate’s first ever game was against the Engineers in 1915-16 with the Raiders winning 6-1. It was the only game of the season. With Rensselaer sweeping the series last year, the Engineers lead the series, 59-56-3.

Canisius Loses First of Doubleheader to Miami

0

The Canisius College hockey team lost to sixth-ranked Miami on Friday night, 3-0. The loss drops the Griffs to 1-3-0 on the season, while the nationally-ranked RedHawks improve to 4-2-1.

“We played the way we wanted to play in the first period but couldn’t find that early goal that could have turned the momentum our way,” said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. “We played hard the entire game but a couple unfortunate bounces didn’t go our way. If we can sustain the way we played for the first, it gives us a great chance to win in the future.”

Making his second start of the season, junior Keegan Asmundson (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.)recorded a career-best 37 saves to anchor the Canisius defense.

The RedHawks took the lead with 3:52 remaining in the opening period when Alex Wideman found the back of the net on the power play to give Miami the early advantage. Wideman would then extend the RedHawk advantage to two with 12:12 remaining in the second. A Canisius defender broke his stick on a one-timer and Wideman would finish an odd-man rush on the other end for the 2-0 lead.

Miami extended its lead 7:48 into the third period. The puck bounced off the glass behind Asmundson and fell right to an open Blake Coleman, who buried his sixth goal of the season for the 3-0 lead. Coleman’s tally would prove to be the game’s final goal as Miami recorded the 3-0 shutout victory.

The RedHawks finished the game with a 40-20 advantage in shots. Miami was also 1-for-3 on the power play, while killing all three Canisius extra-man chances.

Ryan McKay stopped all 20 shots on goal to earn the shutout victory for Miami.
