Orange Women Tie UConn

SYRACUSE SCORES AS TIME EXPIRES TO TIE UCONN

It took every last second, but the Orange were able to salvage a tie with UConn on Sunday, thanks to the last-second heroics of Jessica Sibley and ‘Cuse’s extra skater unit.
With the Orange trailing 2-1, goaltender Jenn Gilligan on the bench and time waning, Sibley managed to deflect a shot from Alysha Burriss into the top of the net just before the horn sounded. After review, the officials determined that the goal stood and had crossed the line with less than one second remaining, sending Syracuse to overtime for the fourth-straight game.
Sibley’s goal capped off a dominant third period for the Orange in which pepper the Huskies’ net, attempting 31 shots (putting 14 on net and having 11 blocked) to UConn’s three – but it wasn’t until Sibley’s last-second goal that the Orange were able to get past UConn net minder Annie Belanger.
After a scoreless first period, Syracuse got on the board first in a wild second period that featured seven penalties as Emily Costales scored 52 seconds into the second period. The goal was the first of Costales’ career, with the assists coming from Nicole Renault and Stephanie Grossi.
The Huskies got the goal back with nine minutes left in the second as they took advantage of a 4-on-4 situation and Theresa Knutson beat Gilligan on a feed from Sara MacDonnell.
UConn scored again just under six minutes later when Emily Snodgrass scored on a Huskies’ power play to give them a 2-1 lead which they would take into the locker room.
After the Orange’s dominant third period, the Huskies saw more opportunities in the overtime period, but Gilligan and the ‘Cuse defense withstood the pressure to preserve the tie.
The tie is the fourth in a row for the Orange, tying the amount of ties the team had in the last two seasons combined and second only to the 2010-11 (6) season for most in an entire season.
Syracuse owned a 39-19 advantage in shots on goal in the game.

Canisius Defeats Army

0

West Point, N.Y. – Junior Ralph Cuddemi (Concord, Ontario) and freshmen Nolan Sheeran (East Amherst, N.Y.) and Reilly Turner (Temiscaming, Quebec) led the Canisius College hockey team to overcome a three-goal deficit in regulation for the first time in the program’s history as the Griffs earned a 6-4 road Atlantic Hockey victory at Army on Friday night. With the win, Canisius improves to 2-1-0 and 1-0-0 in league play, while the Black Knights drop to 1-2-0 overall and against Atlantic Hockey foes.

Cuddemi recorded the program’s 16th all-time hat trick in the rally, while Sheeran posted the first three points of his collegiate career, netting the game-winning third-period goal to go along with two assists. Turner played the final 27 minutes in net for the Griffs, stopping all 15 shots he faced in earning his first collegiate victory.

“The first half of tonight’s game was all Army as they out-worked, out-executed and was just the better team,” said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. “We found a way to band together through good-hard work and good special teams to get this win. It’s a really good and important team win to open our league schedule and we now need to carry this forward.”

Sophomore Shane Conacher (Burlington, Ontario) and senior Matthew Grazen (Clarence, N.Y.) also added short-handed goals in the comeback victory.

Canisius needed the rally after Army dominated the opening 20 minutes of action, being rewarded with a 3-0 lead at the first intermission. The Black Knights got on the scoreboard 3:17 into the game when Joe Llaurado broke free from the Canisius defense and finished 1-on-1 for the 1-0 lead.

The Black Knights then took advantage of defensive miscues by the Griffs to stretch their advantage. Joe Kozlak buried his chance after a Canisius turnover from behind its net for the 2-0 lead 6:13 into the contest, forcing an early Griffs timeout. Brendan McGuire added to Canisius’ misery with his first tally when two defenders collapsed on one player on a rush, leaving McGuire open for the 3-0 Army advantage 10:44 into the contest.

Overall, Canisius did not register its first shot of the game until more than 14 minutes had ticked off the clock, while the Black Knights recorded the first 11 shots of the game. Overall, Army outshot the Griffs, 13-3, in the first 20 minutes of the contest in building its 3-0 lead.

The momentum turned toward the Griffs during the second period with Canisius netting three goals to one for the Black Knights. Conacher finally got the Griffs on the scoreboard with a short-handed goal. The sophomore skated from his own end and finished high, glove-side for his first tally of the season. Senior Braeden Rigney (Singhampton, Ontario) registered an assist on the short-handed goal.

Army quickly reclaimed its three-goal lead when Tyler Pham scored on the resuming power play. However, Cuddemi responded with two power-play goals in the final six minutes of the period to pull Canisius back within one. The junior netted his first of the day with 5:42 remaining when Sheeran’s back-door pass was tipped by senior Cody Freeman (Toronto, Ontario) right to Cuddemi, who finished on the open net for his first goal of the season.

The same three players would hook up on another Canisius power play just a little more than three minutes later. Cuddemi and Freeman connected on a give-and-go with Sheeran registering the second assist for 4-3 score after two periods of play.

Canisius then completed its comeback with three additional tallies in the third period. The Griffs were whistled for three-consecutive penalties to start the third, resulting in a total of 1:34 of Army 5-on-3 action. Not only did Canisius kill the power plays but Grazen scored a short-handed goal with 12:58 remaining to tie the game at four. Senior Tyler Wiseman (Burlington, Ontario) outskated the Army defenders to gain possession in the Black Knights’ zone. The senior then passed the puck back to classmate Stephen Farrell (Ottawa, Ontario) on the blue line, who fired a shot that was tipped into the back of the net by Grazen, knotting the game at four.

After Turner stopped an Army breakaway attempt, Sheeran gave the Griffs their first lead of the night with his first collegiate tally with 10:24 left in regulation. Sophomore defender Geoff Fortman (Crystal Lake, Ill.) gloved a clearance pass down at the blue line and then the rookie redirected Fortman’s shot past the Army netminder for the 5-4 advantage.

Canisius would seal the victory and the comeback when Cuddemi completed his hat trick, scoring an empty-net goal with 47.8 seconds remaining. Conacher added an assist on the game-clinching tally.

Overall, Army outshot the Griffs, 35-23, in the contest. Canisius won the special teams battle, 4-1, going 2-for-5 on the power play in addition to its two short-handed goals. The Black Knights were 1-for-6 with the extra-man advantage.

Union Posts Victory Over Maine

Union continued its success against Hockey East opponents, posting a 3-0 win over Maine in the Dutchmen’s road opener before 4,895 at the Alfond Arena. Union has now won nine straight against against Hockey East, dating to December 2012.

Senior goaltender Colin Stevens was named the game’s No. 1 Star after making 29 saves to record his 10th career shutout. Maine’s biggest threat came in the third period, when Union was whistled for back-to-back penalties.  The Dutch, however, killed off both short-handed situations.

Mike Vecchione earned No. 2 Star honors, opening scoring on a slap shot from outside the blueline that deflected off the glove of goaltender Matt Morris and trickled across the goal line.  Vecchione has scored in all three games this season.

The second-ranked Dutchmen added a pair of goals in the third period.  Matt Wilkins put his blade on a pass from Kevin Shier for a chip-in 5:31 into the period before freshman Spencer Foo sealed the win with an empty-netter at 18:49.

Panowyk Scores Game Winner for Colgate

0

HAMILTON – Freshman Mike Panowyk scored the game-winning goal midway through the second period and sophomore goalie Charlie Finn recorded his second career shutout as fourth-ranked Colgate defeated Northeastern, 3-0, in collegiate men’s ice hockey action Friday at Starr Rink.

Panowyk’s goal at the 9:44 mark of the second period broke open a scoreless contest and Finn made the freshman’s first collegiate tally count as he notched 24 saves, including 16 during the third period, to keep the Huskies off the scoreboard and propel the Raiders to their second victory of the season. Juniors Darcy Murphy and Kyle Baun also scored for Colgate as the duo notched a pair of third period tallies to give the Raiders some breathing room during the final stanza.

With the win, Colgate Head Coach Don Vaughan recorded the 350th victory of his career, becoming one of only 11 active coaches in NCAA Division I Hockey to reach the milestone.

Union’s Vecchione ECAC Hockey Player of Week

Sophomore center Mike Vecchione of Union College has been named ECAC Hockey Player of the Week.

Vecchione scored both nights in Union’s season-opening sweep of American International (Oct. 10) and 19th-ranked New Hampshire (Oct. 11) at Messa Rink.

Vecchione recorded a shorthanded goal and assisted on Jeff Taylor’s game-winner against AIC, then followed by registering a goal and assist two minutes apart versus UNH.  The Saugus, Mass., native leads the Dutchmen in scoring with four points.

Second-ranked Union (2-0) travels to Maine (0-2) this weekend (Oct. 17-18).  Friday’s game will be carried by Fox College Sports Pacific.

Potsdam Names Thomas, Simon and Campagna as Captains!

POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Potsdam men’s hockey coach Chris Bernard has announced
that junior forward Todd Thomas (Davidsville, Pa./Hartford Wolfpack) will
serve as the Bears’ captain for the 2014-15 season. Senior forward Ken
Simon (Norwell, Mass./Philadelphia Revolution) and junior defenseman Brad
Campagna (Monroe, N.Y./New York Bobcats) will be Potsdam’s assistant
captains this year.

Thomas played in 24 of the Bears 25 games last season, scoring three goals
and adding 11 assists for 14 points. In his two seasons, the Davidsville,
Pa. native has 24 points on six goals and 18 assists in 49 games.

“Todd has proven to be a consistent model for our team identity,” said
Bernard. “He is a responsible, two-way player who has earned the respect
of his peers with his consistent and hard-working approach to the game.
Our guys know he is a team-first person.”

Simon played in every game last season, totaling five goals and nine

“Both Simon and Campagna compete hard every day,” Bernard said. “They hold
themselves accountable and are fully invested in representing the best
interests of their teammates. They will push people to be better.”

While this trio will don the letters, leadership is not in short supply
with this edition of the Bears.

“With so many seniors, who have contributed such a great deal over the
past several years, we are fortunate to have a great deal of quality
leadership,” added Bernard.

Potsdam hopes to give SUNY Plattsburgh a frightening Halloween when the
Bears host the Cardinals to open the season at 7 p.m. on Oct. 31.

Men’s hockey to host Boston College as part of Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend Saturday

0

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT men’s hockey team celebrates Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend on Saturday, as perennial power Boston College, ranked No. 7 in the current USCHO.com Division I poll, comes to Blue Cross Arena for non-conference contest beginning at 7:05 p.m. On Friday, RIT will host its annual “Skate With the Tigers” event at the Gene Polisseni Center, starting at 7 p.m.

Saturday’s game at Blue Cross Arena was officially announced as a sellout on Tuesday evening, four days in advance of the contest.

It will be a reunion of sorts for Boston College head coach Jerry York, RIT head coach Wayne Wilson and associate head coach Brian Hills. York coached Wilson and Hills at Bowling Green State University in the early 1980s. Click here for an in depth feature on the trio in the most recent RIT University Magazine.

The Tigers come into Saturday’s game with a 1-1 record after splitting a pair of games last weekend at the Gene Polisseni Center, defeating St. Lawrence, 5-2 in front of 3,103 fans Friday, while falling to Clarkson in front of a crowd of 3,502 Saturday. On Friday, Alexander Kuqali (Pittsburgh, PA/Sioux City Musketeers) andBrad McGowan (Langley, British Columbia/Surrey Eagles) had two goals apiece, while Josh Mitchell(Osoyoos, British Columbia/Alberni Valley Bulldogs) tied a career-high with three assists and Jordan Ruby(Tavistock, Ontario/Wellington Dukes) stopped 21 shots. On Saturday, Ken MacLean (Concord, MA/Kalamazoo Wings) made his first home start, stopping a career-best 31 shots, while allowing just two first period goals.

Cameron, who scored just one goal in 32 games last season, scored a goal in both games last weekend. Kuqali’s two goals on Friday matched his total from the previous 57 games, dating back to Dec. 2012. His first goal on Friday was No. 3 in NCAA Hockey’s Top-Five Plays of the Week, which came out on Oct. 14. Click here to view.

In addition, RIT will wear special warm up jerseys that will be auctioned off via silent auction during the game, with proceeds going towards international tiger conservation efforts, as part of the university’s Tigers for Tigers organization.

The Eagles come into Saturday’s game looking for their first win of the season after falling to No. 17 UMass Lowell by a score of 5-2 last Friday. Ryan Fitzgerald and Chris Calnan scored, while Thatcher Demko made 19 saves.

Boston College has eight current players who have been drafted by NHL teams, including first round picks Michael Matheson (Florida, 2012) and Alex Tuch (Minnesota, 2014). Three current Eagles were second round picks.

Tonight will mark the second meeting between the two schools, as Boston College defeated RIT, 6-0 in the championship game of Minnesota’s Dodge Holiday Classic on Dec. 30, 2007.

Saturday’s game will be the fifth straight sellout RIT has enjoyed at Blue Cross Arena for its annual Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend contest.

Saturday’s game will be aired live on Time Warner Cable Sports channel 26 with Gene Battaglia and John DiTullio bringing you the action from Blue Cross Arena.  In addition, the game will be broadcast over the airwaves on WITR 89.7 FM and witr.rit.edu. Live stats are also available here.

On Friday, the team will hold its annual “Skate with The Tigers” event at 7 p.m. at the Gene Polisseni Center. Admission is $5.00 and includes the event, a team picture, autographs from your favorite players, and a tour of RIT’s new locker room. Skate rental is available at Ritter Arena to bring over to the Polisseni Center. All proceeds from the event will go to “Hockey Coaches Care”, the official charitable foundation of the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA).

“Hockey Coaches Care” was created by hockey coaches to assist members of the amateur hockey community in the United States. It has been designed to help a coach or family member or other member of the greater amateur hockey community who is ill or injured in an accident or who has lost a job or has in some other way come upon hard times.

Come out and support your Tigers this weekend and make RIT’s 2014 Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend a memorable one.

Stamp Series Highlights NHL Players

0

The 2014 Original Six Defencemen series highlights a star from each team in the era that ended with NHL expansion in 1967.

In the new Original Six issue, the incomparable Bobby Orr of the Boston Bruins leads a stellar lineup that also includes: Tim Horton (Toronto Maple Leafs), Pierre Pilote (Chicago Blackhawks), Red Kelly (Detroit Red Wings), Doug Harvey (Montreal Canadiens), and Harry Howell (New York Rangers). All players, except Horton, a three-time member of the NHL’s First All-Star Team, won the Norris trophy for best defenceman. Horton finished second twice over his brilliant 23-year NHL career, once to Orr.

Designed by Avi Dunkelman and Joe Gault for Mix Design Group of Toronto, each stamp features an image of the player in uniform, their enlarged jersey numbers in the background:

Bobby Orr: Boston Bruins, Number 4. Born in Parry Sound, Ontario, Orr became the first and only defenceman in league history to twice win the Art Ross Trophy for scoring. Orr led the Bruins to victory in the Stanley Cup final in 1970, scoring the winning goal in overtime and earning the Conn Smythe Trophy as most valuable playoff player. Orr’s Bruins won the Stanley Cup again in 1972. Orr also won the Calder Trophy as best rookie in 1966-67, three consecutive Hart Trophies as the league’s most valuable player (MVP), and was named to the NHL First All-Star Team eight consecutive times from 1968 to 1975. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1979 at age 31.

Tim Horton: Toronto Maple Leafs, Number 7. Horton hailed from Cochrane, Ontario. Though he never won the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s best defenceman, his achievements rival those who did. He helped carry the Leafs to four Stanley Cup victories and was a three-time NHL First Team All-Star. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1977.

Pierre Pilote: Chicago Blackhawks, Number 3. Born in Kénogami, Quebec, and raised in Fort Erie,Ontario, Pilote won the Norris Trophy three times from 1963 to 1965. He was instrumental to the Blackhawks’ 1961 Stanley Cup win and earned places on the NHL’s All-Star teams for seven consecutive years from 1960 to 1967. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1975.

Red Kelly: Detroit Red Wings, Number 4. Hailing from Simcoe, Ontario, Kelly won the first Norris Trophy awarded in 1954. He won eight Stanley Cups, four as a defenceman with the Detroit Red Wings and four with the Toronto Maple Leafs as a centreman. He also won the Lady Byng Trophy as the NHL’s most gentlemanly player four times and was a six-time First Team All-Star. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1969.

Doug Harvey: Montreal Canadiens, Number 2. Harvey was born in Montréal, Quebec, and played for the Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues and Detroit Red Wings. He was an 11-time All-Star who earned the Norris Trophy seven times and gained an immortal place in the history of the Canadiens for the role he played in the Habs’ record-setting five straight Cup wins from 1956 to 1960. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1973.

Harry Howell: New York Rangers, Number 3. Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Howell played 25 professional hockey seasons from 1951 to 1976. He won the Norris Trophy in 1966-67, the last season of the Original Six, was a First Team All-Star in 1967 and played in seven All-Star games. He played for the Oakland Seals and Los Angeles Kings before moving to the WHA in 1973 to play for the San Diego, New Jersey and Calgary franchises. He retired from hockey in 1976 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1979.

Canada Post has produced more than 50 NHL-themed stamps since 1992. The first hockey-themed stamp was issued on January 23, 1956 and featured three players wearing “Canada” jerseys.
