Army, Robert Morris Close with Tie

HOCKEY EARNS DRAW AGAINST ROBERT MORRIS

Nick’s Tying Goal Was First of Career

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Ryan Nick chose a great time to score his first collegiate goal as he helped the Army hockey team earn a 3-3 tie against Robert Morris on Saturday night at Tate Rink.

Army (2-3-1, 2-3-1 AHA) battled all night long against the Colonials, who came into Saturday night’s game with an undefeated record. Maurice Alvarez, Josh Richards and Nick were the goal scorers for the Black Knights. Andy Faust assisted on Richards’ goal for his first point in an Army uniform. Parker Gahagen pushed aside 27 shots in the tie.

Robert Morris (4-0-1, 3-0-1 AHA) got all of its goal scoring from one player, Cody Wydo. The senior recorded a hat trick, while Linemate Zac Lynch finished with two assists. Terry Shafer was peppered throughout the night with Army earning a 40-30 shot advantage.

“The guys skated really hard tonight and had a great effort all the way through overtime,” head coach Brian Riley said. “RMU was a big challenge for us, but we have a lot of depth this year and it really showed with the effort from all our guys. Even though we were down a goal, we kept pressing and getting shots on the net.”

Robert Morris took the early lead with Wydo scoring his fourth of the season. Linemate Zac Lynch interrupted an Army breakout in the neutral zone and connected with Wydo at the blueline. He took the puck into the Black Knight zone and beat Gahagen for the 1-0 with 11:36 remaining in the first period. Army did get the first power play of the game and Clint Carlisle had a golden chance. He tried to pick the top corner on the glove side of Shafer, but sailed it wide of the mark. Robert Morris had a 9-8 shot advantage in the first frame.

The second period was full of action with a combined four goals scored as the Colonials took a 3-2 lead going into the final frame.

Army fought back to tie the game twice during the period and the first goal came from Alvarez with a blast from the point. Nick DeCenzo carefully drew the defense down between the circles and slid a pass to Alvarez for the one-timer, which was his second of the season.

Robert Morris regained the lead with Wydo scoring his second of the night, going coast-to-coast to give the Colonials a 2-1 advantage. The Black Knights, however, didn’t go away with Richards firing a wrister from just outside the face-off circle. The shot found its way through traffic to tie the game at 2-2. Andy Faust won the draw back to Richards and he wasted no time putting it on net.

Wydo struck again to earn the hat trick late in the middle stanza with a power play goal. The goal was probably not his prettiest score of the night. The shot was an odd angle shot that went past Gahagen to give the Colonials a 3-2 lead with two minutes left in the second period.

The Black Knights didn’t let Wydo’s third goal disrupt the momentum in the game as they came out on fire and finished with a 12-6 advantage in shots in the third. One of those shots came from Nick as he tallied the first goal of his career. He collected the puck in the neutral zone and skated into the slot. He fired a shot that looked to mix up Shafer and it hit the back of the net to send the crowd into a frenzy and send the game to overtime.

In the extra frame, Army continued to get chances with three in a row coming in the final two minutes, but Shafer was able to steer them wide of the net and the game ended in a 3-3 tie.

The Black Knights are back at Tate Rink on Halloween night as they wrap up a month-long homestand with Brown coming to West Point for a 7:50 p.m. face-off.

0

Hobart College Hockey Head Coach Mark Taylor recently announced that seniors Bronson Kovacs (Sault Ste Marie, Ontario)Terrence O’Neill (Kearny, N.J.) and Peter Ryan (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.)will serve as team captains, while juniors Mac Olson (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) and Ben Gamache (Longlac, Ontario) will be alternate captains for the 2014-15 season.

This year’s captains were announced to the team by Pierre McGuire ’83, a Hobart hockey alumnus and Emmy award-winning sports correspondent during a recent visit to campus.

“Over their careers here, all of these guys have distinguished themselves as leaders in the classroom, at practices, in games and especially in their pursuit of expectations for the success of this team,” said Taylor.

An alternate captain last season, Kovacs posted 14 points on six goals and eight assists. He ranked seventh in the ECAC West in defenseman scoring and was second on the team and tied for sixth in the conference with five power-play goals. Kovacs also finished the season tied for ninth in the league with 11 power-play points. He produced the game-winning goal in a 5-2 victory over Salve Regina.

Also an alternate captain in 2013-14, Terrence O’Neill saw time in 21 games last winter, posting three goals and 10 assists for 13 points. The All-ECAC West first team honoree ranked eighth in the league in defenseman scoring and was tied for sixth in the conference with two short-handed points. O’Neill registered the game-winning goal 56 seconds into overtime in a 3-2 victory at Elmira. He tallied three assists in a 5-1 victory over Manhattanville. O’Neill was selected the ECAC West Rookie of the Year in 2012.

Ryan, also a 2013-14 alternate captain, played in all 27 games last year. He chipped in two goals and two assists for four points. Ryan scored the Statesmen’s first goal in a 3-2 overtime win at Elmira, and the very next day, he assisted on the game-winning goal for a 5-4 overtime victory in Pine Valley. Ryan, Kovacs and O’Neill led the Hobart defensive unit that posted seven shutouts last winter. The Statesmen ranked second in the league in scoring defense (2.85 ga/gm) and first on the penalty kill (83.3%).

A forward and All-ECAC West second team selection, Olson led the Statesmen with 27 points and 15 goals, appearing in all 27 games last season.  He also chipped in 12 assists and notched three game-winning goals, including the game winner nine seconds into overtime against then No. 7 Williams in the Buck Supply Winter Classic. Olson finished the season sharing the ECAC West lead in goals, tied for third in game-winning goals and short-handed goals (2), tied for sixth in short-handed points (2) and tied for seventh in points. He was tabbed the ECAC West Rookie of the Year in 2013.

Also a forward, Gamache ranked second on the team with 25 points on 10 goals and 15 assists. He garnered All-ECAC West honorable mention last year. Gamache led the Statesmen with seven power-play goals and added two game-winning goals. He capped the season ranked second in the ECAC West in power-play goals, third in power-play points (17), tied for third in short-handed points (3), tied for seventh in game-winning goals, tied for 11th in points, tied for 12th in assists, and tied for 13th in goals.

“I feel really fortunate this year to have a team that has a good number of individuals that are experienced and respected leaders, both those who wear letters now and those who may not,” said Taylor. “This was very evident in the off-ice training this fall.  It was one of our best preseasons and I think that speaks volumes of the entire team and of the leadership within it.”

The Statesmen will begin the 2014-15 season on Friday, Oct. 31, when they travel to take on Brockport in a non-league game at 7 p.m.

Utica Women Open TODAY (Oct. 25)

10/24/2014 | Women’s Ice Hockey
Utica, NY (10/24/14)- The Utica College women’s hockey team looks to make it back to the ECAC West Conference tournament for the third straight year and the 13th time in the program’s 14-year history. The Pioneers break the ice on their 2014-15 campaign Saturday as they host the Ancaster Avalanche for an exhibition match up. Game time is set for 2 p.m.

LAST SEASON:
UC wrapped up its most successful season in six years as it finished 17-9-1 overall. The Pioneers made their 12th ECAC West tournament appearance in program history, before being knocked out in the semifinals by eventual conference and National Champion, Plattsburgh State. Utica finished the year in the receiving votes category in the final D3hockey.com National Rankings. The Pioneers remained just outside the top-ten as they received two votes, two behind St. Norbert and eight behind tenth-ranked Oswego State.

The Pioneers graduated seven seniors including All-AmericanMegan Myers (Las Vegas, NV/LA Selects), Jennifer Hamel (Ithaca, NY/Northwood School), who tied the program’s career win record, as well as Vanessa Maines (Boxborough, MA/Acton-Boxborough Regional), Meredith Tice (Hershey, PA/Washington Pride), Caitlyn Moccaldi (Clinton, NY/Clinton High School Boys), Alicia DiCenzo(Canton, MA/Boston Jr. Shamrocks), and Kristen Beckman(Arnold, MD/Northwood School).

CAPTAINS:
Utica welcomes back 16 players from last year’s squad including captains Nikki Kieffer (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy), Nicole Schwartz (Danville, CA/San Jose Sharks), and Kelsey Dowdall(Smiths Falls, ONT/Nepean). Kieffer, who is also a member of the field hockey team, registered 11 points on two goals and nine assists in 23 games last season. She will provide veteran leadership on the Pioneer blue line. Schwartz averaged just under one point a game as she had five goals and six assists in 12 games before missing the second half of the season due to injury. Dowdall will add power up front and looks to improve upon her five goal, 11 assist production from a year ago. The 5’3″ center dished out nine assists during an eight-game scoring streak as a junior.

OFFENSE:
On the offensive end, the Pioneers return ECAC West All-Rookie selection Gabrielle Schnepp (Northville, MI/Belle Tire), who finished second on the team with 15 goals and 26 points. She ranked fifth in the nation in rookie scoring with 1.00 points per game. Junior Morgan Reed (Fort Myers, FL/Cushing Academy) is coming off a solid sophomore season in which she lit the lamp 11 times and added 14 assists to finish third on the team in scoring.

ON THE BLUE LINE:
Apart from Kieffer, senior Samantha Pucci (Pearl River, NY/Connecticut Polar Bears) will also provide much needed experience on the Utica defense. Pucci has played in 72 games for UC, the second-most among active players, and has registered ten career assists. She is a solid D who can jump into the rush when needed. Junior Janessa Haasbeek (Grand Forks, ND/Canadian International Hockey Academy) tallied eight assists in 25 games as a sophomore. As one of only four returners of the defensive core, she will look to step into a bigger role this season.

IN THE CREASE:
The Pioneers will have to fill the void left by the graduation of last season’s starting goalie, Jennifer Hamel (Ithaca, NY/Northwood School). Senior Marissa McNamara (Camillus, NY/Lysander Lightning), junior Gabrielle Abbott (Scottsdale, AZ/St. Marks), and sophomore Keira Goin (Dobbs Ferry, NY/Hotchkiss School) will all battle for the starting spot, which is currently up for grabs. McNamara has seen action in seven games in her career, while Goin got one start in net last season.

NEWCOMERS:
Utica welcomes 10 new faces to the squad including forwards Taylor Osowski, Carlie Smith, Nikki Clover, and Jennifer Arts, defenders Veronique Lortie, Samantha Husak, Allison Buch, Kelly Kritzer, and Emily Holtshouser. Amanda Lupo will also challenge for playing time between the pipes this season.

LOOKING AHEAD:
The Pioneers open regular season play Nov. 8 and 9 with a home-and-home series against ECAC West newcomer, William Smith College. UC will travel to Geneva, NY on Saturday, Nov. 8 for a 4 p.m. game. Both teams will then travel to Utica for a 3 p.m. face off on Sunday, Nov. 9.

Canisius Victorious

Three goals in the final 10 minutes of the third period led to a victory for the Canisius College hockey team against AIC on Friday night, 3-1. With the win, the Griffs improve to 3-2-0 on the season and 2-1-0 in Atlantic Hockey play, while the Yellow Jackets drop to 0-3-1 and 0-2-1 against league foes.

“It was well-played hockey game both ways,” said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. “We were able to get a timely power-play goal, some big saves and a huge 5-on-3 penalty kill with the game on the line. We showed excellent demeanor with intensity from start to finish in a hard-fought victory.”

Seniors Cody Freeman (Toronto, Ontario) and Matthew Grazen (Clarence, N.Y.) and sophomore Shane Conacher (Burlington, Ontario) all scored in the victory.

Senior Keegan Asmundson (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) stopped 24 shots to earn the win in net.

Neither team scored during the first two periods of play but it wasn’t without chances. The Yellow Jackets seemingly grabbed the lead less than three minutes into the contest but after a review, the officials disallowed the goal due to goalie interference in the crease. Canisius then carried the better of the play of the second period and had a great chance to score with the goalie on the ice but the AIC netminder kicked his leg in the air to keep the puck out of the net.

Canisius finally tallied a goal when Conacher netted his second of the season, scoring on the power play with 9:34 remaining in regulation. Junior Ralph Cuddemi (Concord, Ontario)sent a pass through the slot and found his linemate open on the other side. Conacher then buried his chance for the 1-0 lead. Freshman Nolan Sheeran (East Amherst, N.Y.) also registered an assist on the extra-man tally.

The Griffs then wasted no time adding to their lead, scoring just 92 seconds later. On a rush, Freeman scored off a rebound from a Mike Sabatini (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) shot for the 2-0 advantage. Freshman Jack Stander (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) added an assist on the goal for his first collegiate point with 8:02 left in the third.

AIC cut the Canisius lead in half when Nathan Sliwinski scored right after the Yellow Jackets had a full two minutes of 5-on-3 power-play time, making the score 2-1 with 5:04 left in the contest.

Canisius, however, sealed the victory with 3:00 remaining. From the corner, senior Tyler Wiseman (Burlington, Ontario) found Grazen wide open in front of the net and the senior finished for his second goal of the season. Senior Braeden Rigney (Singhampton, Ontario)also posted an assist for the 3-1 final score.

The Griffs finished the game with a 35-26 advantage in shots on the night, including 16-8 edge in the third period. Canisius was 1-for-3 on the power play, while killing all three AIC extra-man chances.

The same two schools wrap up the series tomorrow night with game time set for 7:05 p.m.

Game Notes: Canisius has scored 14 goals this season with eight coming in the third period … The Griffs did not allow a power-play goal for the first time this season … The 35 shots are the most for Canisius this season.

WEST POINT, N.Y. – After a scoreless first period, Robert Morris netted two goals in the second frame and downed the Army hockey team, 3-0, on Friday night at Tate Rink.

The Black Knights (2-3-0, 2-3-0 AHA) saw Parker Gahagen make 38 saves between the pipes to lead the way. Army had its chances on the power play with five opportunities, but couldn’t find the net.

The Colonials (5-0-0, 3-0-0 AHA) remained undefeated with Matt Cope tallying two points on a shorthanded goal and an assist, both coming in the second period. Dalton Izyk pushed aside 36 shots to earn the shutout, with 14 coming in the opening period.

“It was a 2-0 hockey game going into the third and we were still in a good spot,” head coach Brian Riley said. “Parker had been playing well for us, certainly you have to score at least one to give yourself a chance. I’ve got to give their guy in goal a lot of credit. He made some timely saves.”

The first period featured a lot of action without a goal being scored. The teams combined for 30 shots on goal and both netminders were able to keep the puck out of the net. Army had great puck movement on one of its power play opportunities, but couldn’t find an opening. Gahagen stood tall late in the frame recording back-to-back stops with Robert Morris knocking on the doorstep.

Robert Morris took the first lead of the game 1:40 into the second frame with a shorthanded goal from Cope. Army tried to keep the puck in the zone at the blueline and Cope blocked the re-entry bid. The puck went off the side boards and Cope sidestepped the Army defender. He skated in all alone against Gahagen and roofed it for the 1-0 advantage.

Mann gave the Colonials a 2-0 lead with 7:36 left in the middle period with his first of the season. He fired a shot that a defender blocked, but unfortunately for the Black Knights, the puck came right back to Mann. He wound up and sniped a shot from the outside and past Gahagen. Cope and Greg Gibson were given assists on the play.

Robert Morris added to its lead with 12:49 remaining in the game as Brady Ferguson scored his second of the season. Army was caught up ice and Zac Lynch spotted Ferguson at the blueline and he glided in alone on Gahagen and beat the netminder to close out the scoring at 3-0.

The two schools are back on the ice tomorrow night at Tate Rink for a 7:05 p.m. face-off.

Union Downs St. Cloud

0

Second-ranked Union is off to its best start in 24 season of Division I hockey after defeating ninth-ranked St. Cloud State, 5-1, before a sellout crowd of 2,295 at Messa Rink on Homecoming Weekend.  The 5-0 Dutchmen also extended their school-record winning streak to 17 games, and their home winning streak to 15 games, both marks dating to last season.

Union wasted little time getting on the board, striking three times in the opening nine minutes to chase goaltender Charlie Lindgren. Michael Pontarelli scored a power play goal just 1 minute, 51 seconds into the contest, followed by defenseman Sebastien Gingras’ goal at the 4:07 mark.  Mark Bennett added to the lead by throwing a shot on goal from along the blue line, that snuck inside the right post.

St. Cloud came back strong in the second period, outshoting Union by a 12-5 margin.  The Dutchmen, however, built their lead to 4-0 on Sam Coatta’s goal at 6:52.

Max Novak struck for Union’s second power play goal late in the third period to seal the win.  The Huskies, however, foiled Colin Steven’s shutout attempt by scoring with five seconds left in regulation, a rebound shot from Ben Storm in the slot.

Colgate Defeats Sacred Heart; Breaks Tie in Third

0

Fourth-ranked Colgate scored three times in the third period to break a 2-all tie and defeat Sacred Heart, 5-2, in collegiate men’s ice hockey action Friday at Milford Ice Pavilion

Sophomore Tim Harrison’s first collegiate tally proved to be the difference as his re-direction of a Spiro Goulakos slapshot at the 3:39 mark of the third period broke the 2-2 deadlock and allowed the Raiders to pull away from the upset-minded Pioneers.

Goulakos finished with three assists in the contest to lead a Colgate power play that finished the night 3-for-5 with the man advantage. Junior Kyle Baun also notched three points on a goal and two assists while Harrison finished with a goal and an assist.

Sophomore Charlie Finn recorded 20 saves in goal for Colgate to pick up his fourth win of the season.

Bottom Line

Colgate 5, Sacred Heart 2

Won-Lost Records

– Colgate improved to 4-1-0 on the season as it won its third straight contest.

– Playing its first non-conference game of the season, Sacred Heart slipped to 2-3 on the campaign.

How It Happened

– Junior Tyson Spink opened the scoring at the 3:52 mark of the first period, putting home a feed from Goulakos on the power play to give Colgate a 1-0 margin. Baun was credited with a secondary assist on the play.

– Sacred Heart notched the equalizer less than five minutes later. Zach Sabitini found a streaking Zach Luczyk behind the Raiders defense to send him on a breakaway. Luczyk made the most of the opportunity, putting his shot into the back of the net with 8:23 elapsed in the frame to knot the score at 1-1.

– Baun gave the Raiders a 2-1 lead early in the second period. Junior Mike Borkowski won a faceoff in the left circle to Baun, who took the puck to the net and put it home at the 5:14 mark of the frame for his team-leading fourth goal of the season.

– The Pioneers would once again draw level with the Raiders, this time using a wrist shot from Ben Lake in transition to make it a 2-2 contest. Alec Butcher drew an assist on Lake’s goal, which came at 13:33 of the second period.

– Harrison put the Raiders in front for good early in the third period, deflecting home a one-timer from Goulakos during a power play opportunity less than four minutes into the final frame to put the Raiders ahead, 3-2. Baun earned a secondary assist on Harrison’s tally.

– Senior John Lidgett staked Colgate to its first two-goal cushion of the evening when he snuck a shot under the cross bar from just below the right faceoff circle with 11:41 elapsed in the third to make it a 4-2 game. Goulakos picked up his third assist of the evening as the Raiders struck for their third power play goal of the contest.

– Freshman Evan Peterson closed out the scoring at the 18:02 mark of the third, recording an empty-net tally for his second goal of the season. Harrison and junior Ryan Johnston were credited with assists on the play.

Key Raider Information

– Baun has scored a goal in each of the last three contests. He also took over the team scoring lead with six points (4G/2A) thanks to his three-point output.

– Baun and Goulakos are the first two Colgate players to record three points in a game this season. Goulakos is also the first player with three assists in one game this year as he now leads the team with five assists.

– Harrision became the fourth different Colgate player to record a game-winning goal this season. All four game-winning goals this season have been scored by a player tallying the first game-winning goal of their respective careers (sophomore Derek Freeman and freshmen Evan Peterson and Mike Panowyk).

Inside The Box Score

– Colgate held a 28-22 shot advantage in the contest. The Raiders enjoyed a 9-1 margin in shots attempted in the third period.

– Baun led all players with five shots taken in the contest while Goulakos and Lidgett notched four shots apiece.

– Colgate posted a 39-26 margin in the faceoff circle. Borkowski was 17-of-28 and freshman Mike Panowyk was 12-of-15 to pace the Raiders at the dot.

– Colgate was 3-for-5 on power play while Sacred Heart was 0-for-3 with the man advantage.

Finn’s Shutout Streak Comes To An End

– With the goal by Sacred Heart’s Zach Luczyk at the 8:23 mark of the first period, Colgate sophomore goalie Charlie Finn’s shutout streak to a close.

– Finn had a not allowed a goal since the 15:02 of the third period of the Raiders contest against St. Cloud State on Oct. 11, a span of 133:21 that included back-to-back shutouts of Northeastern last weekend at Starr Rink.

Quotable

Colgate Head Coach Don Vaughan

(On game)

“We talk about it all the time. There are no easy games in college hockey and tonight was no exception. We’re a veteran club and we stuck to the task.  We knew how we wanted to play against Sacred Heart. We stuck with it and got the result that we wanted.”

(On third period)

“It was our best period of the night. We made some adjustments and the guys use to the atmosphere and the facility. Our power play came to life. We moved it around well all night, but we were able to get some shots through in the third. At the end of the night, the power play proved to be the difference.”

(On power play)

“I thought we found seams really well tonight. Spiro (Goulakos) was able to get open in the middle and when he gets shots from the middle, good things happen. I was really happy that John Lidgett was able to get his goal in the third. Spiro found him through the seam and Lidgett didn’t miss, tucking it under the cross bar. It was a great goal and a huge goal for us tonight.”

Canisius Weekend Notes Oct. 22

Canisius (2-2-0, 1-1-0 AHA) at AIC (0-2-1, 0-1-1 AHA)
Dates: Friday, October 24 / Saturday, October 25
Times: 7:05 p.m. / 7:05 p.m.
Location: Springfield, Mass.  |  Olympia Ice Center

DI Series History: Canisius leads, 30-13-4

The Canisius College hockey team returns to action on Friday, starting a two-game series with Atlantic Hockey foe AIC. The schools are set to meet on Friday and Saturday at 7:05 p.m. in Massachusetts.

SCOUTING THE GRIFFS
• Canisius has split its first two series of the season, including one against Army last weekend in its first two Atlantic Hockey games.
• Six different players have recorded a team-best three points this season. Junior Ralph Cuddemi leads the squad with three goals.
• Senior Keegan Asmundson has started all four games in net with a 3.90 goals against average and .870 save percentage.

CUDDEMI NAMED AHA PLAYER OF THE WEEK
• After helping the Griffs to their first conference win of the season against Army on Friday, junior Ralph Cuddemi was named Atlantic Hockey Player of the Week.
• Cuddemi netted the 16th hat trick in the program’s history in a come-from-behind win against the Black Knights.
• The junior leads the Griffs in goals (3) and is tied for the team lead in points (3) and power-play goals (2).

POWERFUL THREATS
• Canisius enters the weekend with the nation’s 13th-ranked power-play unit and one reason why is due to multiple threats.
• Both senior Tyler Wiseman and junior Ralph Cuddemi have netted two extra-man tallies this season. Canisius is one of only four teams in the country with two players to have multiple power-play goals (Bowling Green, North Dakota and Ohio State are the others).
• Overall, the duo is tied for fourth nationally (and two of 18 players with two or more) power-play goals this season.

POWER PROTECTOR
• The Griffs aren’t only a threat to score when on the power play.
• In Friday’s rally, Shane Conacher and Matthew Grazen each netted short-handed goals. It marked just the sixth time in the program’s Division I history with multiple man-down tallies in a single game.
• The Griffs are one of five schools with at least two short-handed goals early in the 2014-15 campaign.

CANISIUS – AIC SERIES HISTORY
• In a series that dates back to 1992, the Griffs are 30-14-4 all-time against the Yellow Jackets, including a 30-13-4 edge in Division I meetings.
• Canisius has defeated AIC more than any other school at the Division I level.
• The Griffs have dominated the series as of late. Since the start of the 2008-09 season, Canisius is 13-1-2 against AIC. The Yellow Jackets, however, ended a 15-game winless streak in their most recent meeting, which was the longest for Canisius versus any single team in program history.
• Last season, the schools split a pair of games in Springfield with Canisius winning the opener, 4-1, before AIC earned a 4-3 win in the finale.

ABOUT THE YELLOW JACKETS
• AIC enters the weekend with a 0-2-1 record, including a 0-1-1 mark in Atlantic Hockey play.
• Johno May leads the Yellow Jackets with four points on a goal and three assists. Alexander MacMillan and David Gandara have each netted a team-best two goals.
• Hunter Leisner has started 2-of-3 games in net with a 5.05 goals against average and .881 save percentage. Alex Murray started one contest, stopping 53-of-55 shots in a 2-2 draw.

Union Weekend Notes Oct. 22

0

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

October 22, 2014

THIS WEEK

A pair of nationally-ranked squads square off this weekend (Oct. 24-25) in Schenectady as No. 2 Union College (4-0) plays host to No. 9 St. Cloud State University (1-1). Faceoff is 7:00 p.m. both nights. The matchup at Messa is one of just two series taking place across the nation featuring a battle of top-10 teams, the other series being No. 5 Providence at No. 3 North Dakota.

STREAKS GALORE

Union brings several notable streaks into this weekend’s series, including a school-record 16-game winning streak and a 21-game (20-0-1) unbeaten streak, both dating to last season. The Dutchmen have also won their last 14 home games, the longest active streak in the country. Union is off to its best start since the 2003-04 team also went 4-0.

RANKED OPPONENTS

The Dutch have excelled against nationally-ranked teams during Head Coach Rick Bennett’s tenure. Since October 2011, Union owns a 31-9-6 (.739) record against ranked opponents, which includes eighth straight wins going back to last season.

LAST TIME OUT

Union passed its first road test of the season, sweeping a road series at Maine before near-capacity crowds at Alfond Arena. Colin Stevens made 29 saves on Friday to notch the 10th shutout of his career in a 3-0 win. Union survived a more physical game on Saturday, using two goals from Daniel Ciampini to surge past the Black Bears, 5-2.

VECCHIONE … AGAIN

For the second time in as many weeks, Mike Vecchione has earned ECAC Hockey Player of the Week honors.

Centering a line with Ciampini and Spencer Foo, Vecchione recorded a goal and four assists in the Maine series. In the opener, he scored the game-winning goal and was named the game’s No. 2 Star. The next night, Vecchione registered a career-high three assists and earned No. 2 Star honors once again.

Vecchione, who has started the season with four straight multiple-point games, leads the Dutchmen in scoring with three goals and six assists for nine points in four contests. He is tied with Nebraska-Omaha’s Jake Guentzel for the national lead in points.

COACH RICK BENNETT

Now in his fourth season, Bennett owns an overall record of 84-27-16 (.724). During his time in the Electric City, Bennett has led Union to a national championship, two Frozen Four appearances, three Whitelaw Cups and two Cleary Cups. Last year he was named Coach of the Year by the American Hockey Coaches Association, College Hockey News and U.S. College Hockey Online.

DUTCHMEN NOTEBOOK

The “U” stands fourth nationally in scoring offense (4.5 goals per game) and eighth in scoring defense (1.5 goals per game) … freshman Ryan Scarfo and J.C. Brassard scored their first collegiate goals last Saturday at Maine … Stevens stopped 55 of 56 shots (.982) and allowed just one goal in 111 minutes of action against Maine in one of college hockey’s toughest buildings for visiting teams … Josh Jooris (2010-13) became the sixth former Dutchman player to appear in an NHL game on Oct. 17. The Calgary forward scored in his NHL debut, going top shelf on Columbus’ Sergei Bobrovsky at 11:43 of the third period in the Flames’ 3-2 road loss … Union opens ECAC Hockey action next week with a home-and-home series against Rensselaer.

Ostersund, Sweden, to host 2015 Ice Sledge Hockey B-Pool World Championships

USA vs Canada in game in October in Buffalo

IPC Ice Sledge Hockey has announced that Ostersund, Sweden, will host the 2015
World Championships B-Pool from 15-21 March.

Teams from South Korea, Sweden, Great Britain, Slovakia and Poland are expected
for the competition which takes place the month before the World Championships
A-Pool in Buffalo, New York, USA.

IPC Chief Executive Officer Xavier Gonzalez said that the announcement is hugely
important for ice sledge hockey following its success at the Sochi 2014
Paralympic Winter Games.

"With World Championships now confirmed in both North America and Europe for
2015, we are in a good position to develop the sport after Sochi 2014.

"The bid from Ostersund was incredibly strong. The facilities are excellent and
the city itself has a long winter sports history.

"I am confident that the athletes and teams will have everything they need to
put on a great show for fans once again."

Sweden's National Paralympic Committee Secretary General Johan Strid said
"Östersund has arranged sports competitions for a long time, and have done so
very well.

"The region has now shown that they want to contribute to the development of the
para-sport Movement and that they have a strategic ambition of being a global
centre for winter para-sports.

"We are of course delighted that they have been given the opportunity to arrange
the IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships B-Pool."

In early 2014, IPC Ice Sledge Hockey announced the competition cycle and
qualification criteria for the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games.

Within the new cycle, an A-Pool and B-Pool World Championships will be held in
both 2015 and 2017. The top two finishers from the 2015 B-Pool event will be
promoted to the A-Pool for 2017 and the bottom finisher will be relegated to the
new C-Pool event that will launch in 2016.

A new World Series was also announced for 2014-15, to develop the wider
competition calendar. The first event will take place from 24-26 October in
Langenhagen, Germany.

The last World Championships B-Pool were held in 2013 in Nagano, Japan, drawing
six teams on the road to Sochi 2014, as the host nation lost to Germany in the
gold-medal game of the tournament.

The 2015 IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships A-Pool will be held in
Buffalo, New York, USA from 24 April-2 May.

Every player will carry a military name patch on the right chest of the jersey with the last name of each of these men and women.  The team will also honor fallen Rochester Police Officer and veteran Daryl Pierson on one sleeve, as well as the “One Team One Fight” phrase on the back. RIT is honored to be part of a larger community effort to recognize and remember all of our veterans.

The fourth annual RIT Veterans Day Breakfast and program for the RIT community veterans and families will occur from 8 a.m. – 10 a.m. in the Gordon Field House on Nov. 11.
