OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team (10-9-1) ran into a hot goalie in Stevenson’s Sarah Modzelewski Sunday afternoon, as the Mustangs (6-9-1) held off the Lakers in a 1-0 decision at the Campus Center Ice Arena. Modzelewski tallied 29 saves for her second shutout of the season.

The first period ended in a scoreless tie, but the frame was not without its scoring chances. Stevenson appeared to have scored with 1:12 remaining in the stanza when Jessie Capanelli swatted a rebound out of the air near the left post. However, the officials waved the goal off due to Capanelli using a high stick. Thirty seconds later, the Mustangs nearly struck again, but Oswego State goalie Tori Trovato (Fr., Fulton, N.Y.) made a diving stick save behind her to keep the puck from crossing the goal line.

Stevenson put up the game’s first goal at 2:43 in the second period when Ana-Sophia Brand fed Megan Donahue just inside the blue line to Megan Donahue. Donahue skated across the slot where she took a shot that went five-hole on Trovato, who finished with 21 saves. It proved to be the lone marker of the frame despite the Lakers having three power-play chances.

Oswego State had two more power-play opportunities early in the third, but Modzelewski thwarted the Lakers during each chance. Oswego State continued to press the issue in the offensive zone to no avail, as Trovato kept it a one-goal game by making 12 stops in the stanza. The Lakers pulled Trovato with 49 seconds to play, but were unable to force the game into overtime.

Neither team scored on the power play, as Oswego State went 0-for-7 with the extra attacker and Stevenson went 0-for-3.

Oswego State has a weekend off before closing out the home portion of its schedule on February 8-9 against Elmira. Friday night’s game will serve as Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night followed by Senior Day on Saturday.
