FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Oswego State men’s ice hockey team scored eight unanswered goals to the end game and defeat Fredonia 10-2 on Saturday night in Steele Hall Ice Arena. With the victory, the No. 3/3 Lakers remain perfect at 2-0 on the season and in conference action. Fredonia’s loss drops the Blue Devils’ record to 0-1-1, 0-1-1.

After scoring the contest’s first three goals and establishing its dominance, Oswego let in a goal right before the end of the first period. Coming out for the second 20 minutes, Fredonia cut the Laker lead to one at 3-2 just 1:47 into the period. That would be all that Fredonia could muster the rest of the way while Oswego stole back the momentum with six-straight goals to end the second stanza. Oswego tacked on one more score over the final period to arrive at the final score of 10-2.

Six different Lakers had multiple-point games on Saturday, paced by Krystian Yorke‘s five on four assists and one goal. The sophomore’s goal was one of the highlights of the night as he buried an impressive backhand while Oswego was playing a man down in the second period.

Alex Botten and Mitchell Herlihey were next on the scoring list against Fredonia, each finishing with three points on two goals and an assist. One of Botten’s goals came on a 2-on-1 breakaway that became the game-winner while his final was the Lakers last goal of the night. Herlihey’s opening goal at 6:18 of the second was the first of his career and also turned the tide by stopping Fredonia’s two-goal run.

Tallying two points on the night were Shawn HulshofKenny Neil and Andrew Barton. Hulshof’s goals were Oswego’s first and second of the night while Neil answered his game-winner in the final minute against Buffalo State on Fridaynight with a goal and an assist versus the Blue Devils. Barton nabbed a goal and an assist as well.

Also registering points on the night were Mike Wills (assist), JJ Hart (goal), Bobby Gertsakis (assist), Sean Federow (assist), and Matt Galati (assist).

Justin Gilbert started between the pipes for Oswego and made 27 saves in his second win of the year.

The Lakers dominated every fact of the game, including doubling up the Blue Devils on face-offs (50-25) while outshooting them 48-29. Oswego’s special teams were on point too, killing two Fredonia power plays while getting Yorke’s shorthanded score.

Next weekend will be the Lakers’ home-opener at 7 p.m. on Saturday when Cortland comes to the Marano Campus Center Arena. It will be Hall of Fame Night as the Oswego State Athletics Hall of Fame inducts seven new members.
