Buffalo Bengals Defeat Cortland in OT

Brett Hope scored three minutes, 10 seconds into overtime as the Buffalo St. men’s hockey team defeated Cortland, 3-2, Saturday night in SUNYAC action. The Red Dragons fell to 0-1-1 with the loss, while the Bengals evened their record at 1-1.

Freshmen Dan Broderick (White Plains/New York PAL Islanders) and Tommy Nolan (Mahopac/Connecticut Oilers) each netted goals for Cortland. Senior Nick Zappia (Manlius/Kingston Voyageurs), junior Ryan Wagner (Buffalo/Aberbeen Wings) and freshmen Drazen Zack (East Greenbush/Connecticut Oilers) and Andrew McCann (Bowmanville, ON/Wellington Dukes) recorded one assist apiece. Freshman goalie Kollyn Jones (Cazenovia/New York PAL Islanders) stopped 29 shots in his first career start.

Hope finished with a goal and an assist for the Bengals. Anthony Beaumont and Jason Zaleski also scored for Buffalo St. Marcus Michalski collected two assists, and Taylor Pryce, Jake Rosen and Nick Berst each chipped in with an assist.

Broderick gave Cortland a 1-0 lead at eight minutes, 43 seconds of the opening period with his second goal of the season. The Bengals tied the game on a power-play goal from Beaumont at 16:07 of the first period. The Red Dragons were able to keep it a 1-1 game after killing off a five-minute major penalty spanning the end of the first period and into the second.

Buffalo St. took the lead on Zaleski’s goal with the man advantage at 12:45 of the second period, but Nolan scored his second goal in as many games at 9:27 of the third period to eventually send the game to overtime. The Bengals earned the win when Hope netted the game-winner with 1:50 left in overtime.
