Neumann Women’s Hockey Top Cortland, 4-3

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior Bek Lucas (Feasterville, PA/New Jersey Colonials) scored two breakaway goals to lead the Neumann women’s ice hockey team to a 4-3 victory over Cortland Friday night in ECAC West action at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons dropped to 0-5 overall and in the league, while the Knights improved to 2-5 and 1-4.

Freshman Olivia Monzel (Batavia, IL/Chicago Fury) scored her first two career goals for Cortland. Freshman Miranda Kolb (Watertown/Syracuse Nationals) recorded one goal and one assist, freshman Carly Weigold (Mahopac/Millbrook Mustangs) collected two assists and senior Richelle Skarbowski (Orchard Park/Univ. of New England) and freshman Emily King (Tonawanda/Buffalo Regals) each chipped in with an assist. Freshman goalie Rachael Farmer (Grand Island/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) made 23 saves.

Sophomores Jackie Schneider (Holland, PA/Lady Patriots) and Jordyn Cholish (Exton, PA/Washington Pride) each contributed a goal for Neumann, and six players recorded one assist apiece. Senior goalie Julia Fair (Meadville, PA/Pittsburgh Elite) registered 20 saves.

Schneider gave the Knights a 1-0 lead at 6:38 of the first period with a power-play goal on a deflection in front. Monzel tied the game, also on the power play, at 13:14 with a shot through traffic from the high slot. Kolb gave Cortland the lead two minutes later on a scramble in front.

Lucas tied the game at 8:28 of the second period when she converted a breakaway on the backhand while short handed. Lucas then gave Neumann a 3-2 lead just 21 seconds into the third period on another rush in alone on Farmer. Cholish’s power-play goal at 10:53 proved to be the game winner as Monzel netted her second goal of the night with 24 seconds to play with an extra skater.

The same two teams meet in Cortland tomorrow at 2 p.m.
