GENEVA, N.Y.—The Geneseo men’s ice hockey team scored with six seconds remaining in overtime to edge No. 8 Hobart 4-3 in in a non-league game played tonight at The Cooler. It was the Statesmen’s third overtime game this year, and it was their first loss this season.
Hobart falls to 2-1-2 overall, while the Knights improve to 4-1-0 this season. The Statesmen scored two third period goals to tie the game up at 3-3 and send it into overtime, but the Knights snuck in the game-winner just before time expired.
Three different Statesmen scored in the game. Junior Terrence O’Neill (Kearny, N.J.) led Hobart with two assists. Sophomore goalie Lino Chimienti (Montreal, Quebec) played all 64:54 in goal for the Statesmen and made 27 saves.
Geneseo struck first in the opening period. At 7:48, Tyler Brickler notched his fifth goal of the season, this one on a shorthanded tally off an assist from Nate Brown. Late in the first, it appeared that first-year Nick Bingaman (Bedford, N.Y.) had scored a shorthanded goal for Hobart, but it was called off by the officials.
The Knights made it 2-0 just 3:44 into the second period. Garry Childerhose sent home a shot after passes from Jack Ceglarski and Connor Athoine.
The Statesmen out shot Geneseo 16-7 in the middle period and with just 18 seconds remaining in the stanza junior Peter Ryan (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) put Hobart on the board. O’Neill slid a pass across the blue line to Ryan who fired a hard slapshot into the back of the net. It was Ryan’s first goal this year. Sophomore Bo Webster (Aurora, Ontario) was also credited with an assist.
Just 4:41 into the third, junior Ian Coleman (Northport, N.Y.) evened the score at 2-2, chipping in his first goal this season. Junior Ryan Michel (Camillus, N.Y.) and sophomore Ben Gamache (Longlac, Ontario)earned the assists. A little over five minutes later, the Knights took back the lead on a goal by Zachary Vit. Matt Solomon registered the assist. Then at 12:34 in the third, junior Brad McBride (Lone Tree, Colo.) tied things up a second time for Hobart. He took a pass from O’Neill and broke through for a one-on-one with Geneseo goalie Bryan Haude. McBride snuck a shot under his pads for his first goal this year. JuniorBronson Kovacs (Sault Ste Marie, Ontario) also logged an assist on the play. Neither team could net the game winner in the rest of regulation.
The Statesmen took a penalty 22 seconds into overtime, but were able to kill off the Knights’ power play. Both teams were 0-for-4 on power plays on the night. With just six seconds left in the extra period, Stephen Collins logged the game winner after a pass from Cam Hampson.
Hobart held a 36-31 edge in total shots. Haude played all 64:54 in goal for the Knights and finished with 33 saves.
