BRIGHTON, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo sophomore forward Arthur Gordon totaled a goal and an assist to lead the No. 5 Knights to a 3-2 season-opening victory at Nazareth, Friday, at the Bill Gray’s Regional Iceplex.

Senior forward Jack Ceglarski and senior forward Stephen Collins also tallied a goal apiece while sophomore goalie Devin McDonald compiled 21 saves to preserve the victory.

After a scoreless first period, Ceglarski got the Knights (1-0) on the board in the second following a pair of Nazareth (0-1) penalties. The captain converted the two-man advantage, finishing off a right-wing feed from Gordon with a low-slot shot inside the right post with 11:07 on the clock.

Nazareth evened the score with 6:31 left in the period. Geneseo went on the power play following a Golden Flyer tripping penalty, but it was sophomore forward Brad Pizzey taking control of the ensuing face-off and beating McDonald for the short-handed goal.

The Knights answered with a short-handed goal of their own less than four minutes later. Gordon caused a turnover in the neutral zone and out-skated a Golden Flyer defender to beat Nazareth senior goalie Brandon Lane with a low shot with 3:04 on the clock.

Collins got into the action with 57 second left in the period, finishing an odd-man rush off a feed from senior forward Trevor Hills to stake the visitors to a 3-1 edge heading into the third period.

Nazareth made it a one-goal game with under eight minutes left in regulation. Following a Geneseo goalie interference penalty, senior forward Justin Lacorte scored the power-play tally, but the Knights were able prevent any further damage to clinch the victory.

Geneseo returns to action next Friday (Nov. 4), hosting SUNYAC-rival Cortland at 7:00 p.m. in the home-opener.
