Five Different Goal Scorers Power Cortland Past Canton

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Five different goal scorers powered the Cortland men’s hockey team to a 5-2 victory over Canton Friday night in non-conference action. The Red Dragons improved to 2-3-1, while the Kangaroos fell to 1-6-0.

Freshman Zach Felser (Sylvania, OH/Philadelphia Little Flyers) scored his first career goal for Cortland and added an assist. Senior Sam Pinsler (Chicago, IL/Green Mountain Glades), Sophomores Andrew McCann (Bowmanville, ON/Wellington Dukes) and Tommy Nolan (Mahopac/Connecticut Oilers) and freshman Shane Bennett (Grand Island/Halton Ravens) each netted a goal. Sophomore Darren McCormick (Buffalo/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) recorded two assists and classmates Dan Broderick (White Plains/New York PAL Islanders) and Dray Zack (Rensselaer/Connecticut Oilers) as well as senior Ryan Wagner (Buffalo/Aberdeen Wings) tallied an assist each. Sophomore goalie Drew Weigman (Gaithersburg, MD/Northern Cyclones) made 25 saves.

Junior Nick Vasilopoulos (Montreal, QC/Kantana Stallions) and sophomore Josh Sova (Oswego/Syracuse Stampede) each scored a goal for Canton. Sophomores Kasey Kulczycki (Laval, QC/Kantana Stallions), Kyle Matsumoto (Walnut, CA/Wilkes-Barre Scranton Knights) and Brett Costello (Lombardy, ON/Smiths Falls Bears) recorded one assist each. Freshman goalie Josh Erickson (Woodbury, MN/Kirkland Lake Gold Miners) turned aside 30 shots.

Cortland held a 2-1 lead after the first period. Nolan was able to beat the Canton goaltender on a breakaway off of a pass from Felser to put the Red Dragons up 1-0. The Kangaroos answered just over two minutes later when Vasilopoulos was able to score on the power-play. Pinsler closed the scoring in the period when he was able to convert off of assists from McCormick and Broderick.

Bennett helped extend the Red Dragon’s lead when he scored a shorthanded goal just six seconds into the second period. Canton came within one when Sova scored with 8:53 remaining in the period. Felser scored just over a minute later off of an assist from Wagner to put Cortland up 4-2.

The lone goal of the third period came on the power-play for the Red Dragons. McCann was able to tap the puck into an empty net after the quick passing from McCormick and Zack put the Canton goalie out of position.
