CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Laura Drew (Andover, MA/Canterbury School) scored three minutes, 48 seconds into overtime to lift the Cortland women’s ice hockey team to a 2-1 victory versus William Smith in ECAC West action Friday night at Alumni Arena. With the win, the Red Dragons improved to 10-12-1 overall and 6-10-1 in the conference and clinched the final ECAC West playoff berth. The 10 wins sets a team record since the program was re-established during the 2000-01 season. The overall record is 13 victories registered during the 1978-79 campaign.

Senior Maggie Corbett (Queensbury/Queensbury H.S.) also netted a goal for Cortland, while seniors Corey Temple (Troy, MI/Ohio Flames) and Madison Fischl (Basking Ridge, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) each recorded an assist. Senior goalie Deanna Meunier (Parsippany, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) turned aside 31 shots.

Freshman Stephanie Hampton (Quispamsis, NB/New Hampton) tallied the goal for the Herons (8-14-2, 3-12-2) off assists from sophomores Krista Federow (Niagara Falls, ON/Kent School) and Rebecca Begley (Fremont, NH/Holderness School). Sophomore goalie Laurel Brown (Cleveland Heights, OH/Gilmour Academy) made 39 saves.

Corbett gave Cortland a 1-0 lead on the power play at 8:29 of the opening period. Temple won a faceoff to Corbett, who deked Brown and netted her sixth goal of the season.

The score remained 1-0 until late into the third period. After a Cortland penalty at the 18:20 mark, Hampton scored on a one timer in front 17 seconds later to send the game into overtime. Needing two wins against the Red Dragons to earn a playoff berth, the Herons pulled Brown with 1:48 remaining in overtime for an extra skater. After the Herons pressured Cortland for nearly 30 seconds, Fischl controlled the puck on the corner boards in the Red Dragons’ defensive zone and swung the puck around the boards on the left side and into center ice. Drew skated onto the puck and fired a shot into the empty net for her team-high eighth goal of the season.

The same two teams meet on Saturday at 2 p.m.
