Cortland Defeats Skidmore College, 4-2

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Four different players scored goals and sophomore goalie Drew Weigman (Gaithersburg, MD/Northern Cyclones) turned aside 44 shots as the Cortland men’s hockey team defeated host Skidmore College, 4-2, in the opening round of the Skidmore Invitational Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons improved to 3-3-2 and advanced to the championship game at 4 p.m. Sunday againt the winner of Potsdam versus Manhattanville. The Thoroughbreds fell to 2-6.

Senior Sam Pinsler (Chicago, IL/Green Mountain Glades) and sophomore Dan Broderick (White Plains/New York PAL Islanders) each tallied a goal and an assist for Cortland. Junior Casie Garrison (Cortland/Philadelphia Revolution) and sophomore Darren McCormick (Buffalo/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) netted one goal apiece, sophomore Dray Zack (Rensselaer/Connecticut Oilers) recorded two assists and sophomore Tommy Nolan (Mahopac/Connecticut Oilers) and freshman Andrew Gleason (Vestal/Syracuse Stars) picked up one assist.

Marc Cibelli registered a goal and an assist for Skidmore, Connor Pelkey scored a goal and three others collected one assist each. Goalie Jack McDonald made 29 saves.

Garrison gave Cortland a 1-0 lead at 12:47 of the first period with his first goal of the season. The lead held up until the third period as the Red Dragons killed off 1:09 of a Skidmore two-man advantage to close the second period.

The Red Dragons then successfully denied the Thoroughbreds for 59 seconds of a two-man advantage to start the third period to hold the 1-0 lead. After the midway point of the period, the teams traded the next five goals. Pinsler made it 2-0 at 13:22 on the power play before Cibelli pulled Skidmore to within 2-1 at 15:29. Skidmore pulled McDonald with 2:55 to play and Broderick capitalized with an empty-net goal at 18:28 to give Cortland a 3-1 lead. After lifting McDonald again for an extra skater, the Thoroughbreds cut the margin to 3-2 on Pelkey’s goal at 19:04. McCormick, however, iced the win with his empty-net goal 20 seconds later.
