Cortland Comes Back To Down Chatham, 4-3

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Katie Gili (Brooklyn/New Jersey Rockets) scored a power-play goal just past the midway point of the third period to complete a Cortland comeback in a 4-3 victory versus Chatham Friday night in ECAC West action at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons improved to 8-7-1 overall and 4-6-1 in the conference with the win. The Cougars fell to 6-10-1 and 2-8-1.

Freshman Charlie Calamari (Barrington, IL/Chicago Fury) recorded a goal and an assist for Cortland. Senior Niamh O’Connor (Paramus, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) and junior Josie Fletcher (Wasilla, AK/Alaska All-Stars) also netted goals for the Red Dragons, while seniors Corey Temple (Troy, MI/Ohio Flames) and Madison Fischl (Basking Ridge, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) and junior Richelle Skarbowski (Orchard Park/University of New England) each chipped in with an assist. Senior goalie Deanna Meunier (Parsippany, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) turned aside 19 shots.

Junior Jenny Jones (Kernersville, NC/Anaheim Lady Ducks) and sophomores Kasandra Petersen (Faribault, MN/Minnesota Blades) and Marissa Janiga (East Aurora/Buffalo Stars) tallied one goal apiece for Chatham. Junior McKenzie Haskins (Anchorage, AK/Team Alaska) recorded two assists, and three others each registered one assist. Sophomore goalie Sydney Isbell (Thunder Bay, ON/Thunder Bay Queens) made 16 saves.

Petersen gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead at 11:20 of the first period with a slap shot from the point through traffic on the power play. Jones made it a 2-0 game just 19 seconds into the second period. Fletcher’s first goal of the year on a one timer at 7:12 of the second period cut the lead to 2-1, but Janiga gave Chatham a 3-1 advantage with a deflection in front on the power play at 8:29. Calamari pulled Cortland to within 3-2 at 17:55 of the period, scoring on a slap shot from the point while the Red Dragons skated with a two-player advantage.

O’Connor tied the score at 4:23 of the third period, forcing a turnover deep in Chatham’s defensive zone and beating Isbell one-on-one. Gili netted the game winner at 11:29 on the power play, her fourth goal of the season. The Cougars pulled Isbell for an extra skater over the final 1:30 but could score the equalizer.

The same two teams meet on Saturday at 2 p.m.
