Cornell Posts 5-1 Victory Over Colgate

ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell scored three times in the first period to post a 5-1 victory over Colgate in ECAC Hockey action Friday at Lynah Rink.

The Big Red jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the game was three minutes old. Christian Hilbrich opened the scoring 1:11 into the contest and Trevor Yates doubled the Cornell cushion just 66 seconds later.

Mike Borkowski’s power play tally midway through the opening frame trimmed the Raider deficit to 2-1, but Mitch Vanderlaan found the back of the net with less than two minutes remaining to restore Cornell’s two goal margin before the first intermission.

The Big Red grew its lead to 5-1 in the second with goals from Patrick McCarron and Matt Buckles. The two teams played a scoreless third period to determine the final margin.

Mitch Gillam got the start in goal for Cornell and finished with 23 saves. Charlie Finn made10 stops between the pipes for Colgate in the first two periods before being replaced by Bruce Racine at the start of the third.

“I think we had a really slow start. To give up two quick goals in this building sets you back on your heels. I thought we had our moments. I thought our power play looked really good. There were no surprises. Cornell played the game that we thought they were going to play. We got behind early and could not dig ourselves out of that hole.”
