William Smith’s Salmon Named To National Team of the Week

William Smith College junior Maggie Salmon (Medford, Mass./Governor’s Academy) was named to the D3hockey.com National Team of the Week following a 1-0-1 record in goal for the Herons.

The ECAC West Goalie of the Week, Salmon, was spectacular in goal for the Herons this weekend, stopping 113 of the 115 shots she faced for a .983 save percentage. After allowing an early goal on Friday night, she shut the door on the nationally ranked Lakers, sending William Smith to a 3-1 victory, its first win over a ranked opponent in program history. Salmon’s 55 saves in the game were the most by a Heron goalie in a win in regulation. Salmon added an assist, the second of her career, on first-year Gina Scibetta’s(Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square) Nation empty-net goal in the third period.

The next day, she matched her career-high with 58 saves as William Smith and Oswego skated to a 1-1 tie. The Lakers again scored in the first period but Salmon stopped the final 54 shots she faced, including 24 in the third period and overtime. In the final three minutes of regulation, Oswego had 1:34 of 5-on-3 time and Salmon stopped all three shots she faced during the two-skater advantage for the Lakers.

Salmon finished her junior season with a career-best 6-8-4 overall record in goal, stopping 656 shots. She recorded a program-record 1.92 goals against average, the first goalie to finish a season with a sub-2.00 GAA in program history. Salmon also produced a record .951 save percentage, which was second best in the ECAC West.

William Smith concluded its third varsity season with a 7-12-6 overall record and a 4-9-5 record in ECAC West play. The Herons finished in seventh place in the ECAC West, the program’s highest finish.
