William Smith Falls To Franklin Pierce

WINCHENDON, Mass. – The William Smith College ice hockey team fell to Division II Franklin Pierce 4-0 this afternoon at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. The Ravens improve to 11-2-1 while the Herons fall to 2-10-1 on the season.

Colleen Doucette opened the scoring for the Ravens at 11:44 of the first period with a power play goal. Hailee Craig carried the puck behind the goal line and sent a pass in front of the cage to Doucette who collected her sixth goal of the season. Karsyn Baker also notched an assist on the play. Franklin Pierce doubled the lead in the final three minutes of the period when Hayley Arnold blasted a shot from the point into the top right corner of the net. Samantha Bureau had the initial shot blocked back to Arnold at the point. Craig added her second assist of the night on the goal as well.

Sarah Sheils scored the game’s final two goals to match game-high point honors with Craig. Just under two minutes into second period with the Ravens on a power play, Sheils one-timed a shot just inside the right post to give Franklin Pierce a 3-0 lead. Sheils’ second goal came at 10:46 of the third period.

Maggie Salmon<http://www.hwsathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5549> started in goal for William Smith making 32 saves Shannon O’Neil got the start in net for Franklin Pierce stopping all 23 shots she faced. The Ravens scored on two of their four power plays while the Herons were unsuccessful on all six of their power plays.

William Smith returns to The Cooler next weekend when they host the reigning national champions, SUNY Plattsburgh, for a pair of games. The Herons will square off with the Plattsburgh Cardinals at 4 p.m. on both Friday, Jan. 16th, and Saturday, Jan. 17.
