U.S. Women’s National University Team Falls, 4-1, to Japan in Second Prelim Matchup at World University Games

GRANADA, Spain—The U.S. Women’s National University Team fell, 4-1, to Japan in its second preliminary matchup of the 2015 Winter World University Games today at Mulhacen Pavilion. Japan opened the scoring in the first period, and after a scoreless second period, Team USA tied the score about midway through the third frame. But in the final 3:12 of the period, Japan scored three unanswered goals, making it 4-1.

The U.S. Women’s National University Team will face host country Spain on Monday (Feb. 9) at 2:30 p.m. ET in its final game of the preliminary round. Check USAHockey.com for coverage of both the men’s and women’s squads at the 2015 Winter World University Games.

U.S. Men’s National University Team Trumps Kazakhstan, 3-2, in Shootout in Second Contest of World University Games

GRANADA, Spain—The U.S. Men’s National University Team picked up its first win of the 2015 Winter World University Games, beating Kazakhstan 3-2 in shootout. Goaltender Matt Cooper (Duluth, Minn./Iowa State University) made 26 saves, plus three in the shootout, while Bryce Johnson (Des Moines, Iowa/University of Oklahoma) scored the only goal for either team in the shootout to give the U.S. the victory.

The U.S. Men’s National University Team will be back in action on Tuesday (Feb. 10) in a game to qualify for the quarterfinal round of the tournament. Team USA’s opponent will be determined tomorrow following the close of the preliminary round and the re-seeding of all 12 competing teams based on points. Check USAHockey.com for updates.
