Union’s Black Records 700th Save But Dutchwomen Lose 5-0

SCHENECTADY, NY—The Union College women’s ice hockey team fell to No. 4/4 Quinnipiac 5-0 on Saturday, Jan. 8 at Messa Rink.

Melissa Black tallied her 700th save of the season while putting up 48 saves in the game. Union posted 25 blocked shots. Elizabeth Otten and Jessica Kaminsky each had five blocked shots.

After nine minutes of play, Quinnipiac posted their first goal as Nicole Brown popped one behind Black off assists from Kristen Tamberg and Melissa Samoskevich. The Bobcats lead the Dutchwomen 1-0 at the end of the first period.

In the second period, Union held Quinnipiac for about 16 minutes until Nicole Connery chipped in a puck from the right side. Shannon Cherpak and Tamberg. Three minutes later, Nicole Kosta quietly slid the puck in Black’s left side off a Lindsey West assist.

The Dutchwomen trailed the Bobcats 3-0 going into the third period. Meghan Turner passed in a shot that ricocheted off Black’s left pads that bounced into the back of the net to put Quinnipiac up 4-0. With 30 seconds left, Taylar Cianfarano put her 19th goal of the season into the back of the net from an Emma Woods and Connery assist.

Union takes on crosstown rival RPI on Friday at RPI at 3 p.m., and at Messa Rink on Saturday at 3 p.m.
