OMAHA, NE – The Union College men’s hockey team dropped a 5-3 decision to Omaha, as the Mavericks swept the weekend series on Saturday night at Baxter Arena.

The Dutchmen close out the 2017 calendar year with a 10-10-1 record, while Omaha improves to 9-8-1.

Union opened the scoring in the first period, scoring with just five seconds left in the period. The initial play was ruled a no-goal, but after video review, the officials determined that Ryan Walker’s shot did cross the goal line, netting him his fifth goal of the season.

With the 1-0 lead to start the second period, things quickly went awry for the Dutchmen. Five minutes in, Josh Kosack was given a major and a game, which resulted in the Mavericks scoring two power-play goals to take the lead before the midway point of the second. Omaha then scored twice more before the end of the period to take a commanding 4-1 lead.

Despite losing the lead, Union kept up the pressure in the third and eventually found the back of the net twice in the final minutes of the game.

While on the power play and with an empty net, Cole Maier scored a redirection goal to extend his career-best point streak to 10 games, with his sixth goal of the season. Omaha scored its fifth goal on an empty-net chance a minute later, before Walker scored his second of the game after with 52 seconds remaining in regulation.

Both teams scored two power-play goals, as Union went 2-for-5 on the man advantage, with Omaha going 2-for-6.

The 10 goals scored by Omaha over the weekend is the most goals Union has conceded over a weekend so far this season.
