PROVIDENCE, RI – After a crushing defeat to Yale last night, the Union College women’s hockey team bounced back and beat Brown University tonight, 5-1, for the program’s first ever season sweep over a league opponent.

Union last defeated Brown on Oct. 27, 6-3.

The contest started out evenly matched, but at 18:35 the Dutchwomen broke through. Haley Shugart netted the puck off a rebound and gave Union the 1-0 lead for the first period. Shots ended even at 12-12 for the stanza.

Brown responded early in the second period, settling the score at one a piece. However, this would be the Bears only response for the rest of the evening. After three minutes of a tied game, Shugart scored her second of the night and Union’s ultimate game-winner.

Later in the second period, Union would go up 5-3 on a power play. Senior Katie Laughlin would score with the second infraction still in the penalty box, and 10 minutes still to go in the second.

In the final period, the Dutch remained persistent and kept their foot on the gas. Katelynn Russ would score her sixth goal of the season, just three minutes into the third. Senior Brandy Streeter secured the Union victory with her second goal of the weekend with under a minute to play. Russ assisted Streeter’s goal.

Sophomore goaltender, Kate Spooner earned tonight’s win, with 27 saves. This is the first win of Spooner’s sophomore campaign.
