NEW YORK – Ten members of the Union College men’s hockey team traveled to New York City in early May to meet with alumni in the finance industry.
“This trip was a great opportunity for us to hear advice directly from alumni in the industry,” said senior Michael Ryan. “It also stressed the importance of academics and preparing ourselves for our futures. The alumni were very generous to invite us into their firms and show us their world.”
Seven total stops were made at firms on Wall Street including Credit Suisse, Atalan Capital, Bank of America, Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA), Cantor Fitzgerald, Newmark, and CBRE. The firms involved showcased different sides of the financial industry including investment banks, commercial real estate, and hedge funds.
New York City is a hub for many Union alumni and the team was fortunate to meet with alumni at each stop, including several former hockey student-athletes.
“Union College is a close-knit community,” said Kevin Sullivan ’14. “It’s important to create relationships with alumni and ask questions about career development. This trip is something I wish I did when I was a student.”
Aside from getting an inside-look at several major corporations, students were able to ask questions related to career development and receive advice from alumni in the field.
“Union is a great liberal arts education,” added Sullivan. “The students got to come to New York City and visit some of the biggest corporations. This was an opportunity to show students from all over the world what New York City has to offer while showcasing the different sides of the finance industry.”
The trip was organized by members of the team with the hopes that this might become an annual trip.
