Despite pouring in five goals – the highest output of the season – the Syracuse hockey team couldn’t outlast Vermont in overtime and fell 6-5 on Friday night.

The Orange (3-5-5, 2-1-1 CHA) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period, but the Catamounts (7-4-1, 1-2-0 WHEA) rallied to score three in the second and both teams scored a pair in the third to send the game into overtime.
Syracuse applied a heavy barrage of pressure to start the overtime period, but after Akane Hosoyamada was taken down chasing after a loose puck, Vermont’s Brittany Zuback took advantage netting the game-winning goal.
Freshman Stephanie Grossi got the Orange on the board by finishing a feed from Alysha Burriss and Kaillie Goodnough. Grossi chipped in a pair of assists later in the game to add to her team-leading 11 points.
Sophomore Jessica Sibley notched the Orange’s second goal when she deflected a shot from Dakota Derrer with 1:39 to go in the period and Melissa Piacentini struck with 14 seconds remaining in the period – with assists from Grossi and Knerr – to cap off a 3-goal period.
The Catamounts got three back in the 2nd with Dayna Colang notching two of her three goals and Amanda Pelkey adding the third with 1:47 to go in the period.
Sibley scored her second goal of the night on the power play 1:09 into the period, with Goodnough and Hosoyamada credited with the helpers, but Vermont would answer with two goals in under three minutes midway through the third to take a 5-4 lead.
Renault scored with under-eight to play on the third power play goal of the night, with assists to Larissa Martyniuk and Grossi to even the game at five and send the game into overtime.
Junior Jenn Gilligan made 21 saves in the loss.
