CANTON, N.Y. – Sophomore Will Reilly scored a pair of power play goals to help the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s hockey team to a 4-4 tie with St. Lawrence University at Appleton Arena on Saturday night. With the draw, the Engineers move to 1-4-3 overall (0-3-1 ECAC Hockey), while the Saints are now 1-8-1 (0-1-1 ECAC Hockey).

Trailing 4-3, the Saints netted the tying goal with just 28 seconds left in regulation, when senior captain Joe Sullivan (Las Vegas, NV/Indiana) netted his second goal of the game from the low right circle. Defensemen Ben Finklestein (South Burlington, VT/Kimball Union) and Nolan Gluchowski (Wixom, MI/Sioux Falls) picked up the helpers.

St. Lawrence outshot the Engineers 6-3 in overtime, but could not find a way past RPI freshman netminder Linden Marshall (Victoria, BC/Trail), who finished with a career-high 41 saves.

Sophomore Alex Gilmour (Uxbridge, ON/Pembroke) opened the scoring at 7:33 of the first, sticking home a rebound on the break. Freshman Keenan Suthers (Tecumseh, ON/Dubuque) had his initial shot turned aside by Marshall, before Gilmour swooped in and buried the loose puck.

RPI pulled even less than a minute later, as Will Reilly (Toronto, ON/Nanaimo) scored on the power play at 8:31. The Engineers worked the puck the blue line for Reilly, whose shot found its way through traffic and past St. Lawrence junior goalie Arthur Brey (Yorba Linda, CA/Sioux Falls).

Junior Evan Tironese then gave Rensselaer a 2-1 lead at 11:26 of the first, skating into the zone on the right and rifling a shot under the blocker of Brey for his fourth goal of the year.

St. Lawrence answered at 19:14 of the frame on Sullivan’s first goal of the evening. Finkelstein’s shot from the point was stopped by Marshall, but Sullivan was the first player to the rebound for the equalizing goal (2-2).

Freshman Callum Cusinato (Toronto, ON/Toronto) put the hosts up 3-2 at 11:05 of the second, firing home his team-leading fourth goal of the season. Helpers went to Gluchowski and freshman Cade Gleekel (Golden Valley, MN/Merritt).

Reilly brought the Engineers even (3-3) at 14:18 of the second period. Senior Mike Prapavessis (Oakville, ON/Toronto) found Reilly with some space at the top of the zone and his wrist shot found the top left corner of the net for a 3-2 lead. The man advantage tally drew a secondary assist from classmate Jacob Hayhurst (Missassauga, ON/Cedar Rapids).

Rensselaer regained the lead, 4-3, just 1:42 into the third, when freshman Emil Ohrvall (Halmstad, Sweden/Waterloo) found his brother Jesper Ohrvall (Halmstad, Sweden/Fairbanks) cutting the net for his first goal of the year.

The Engineers are back in action next weekend, when they host No. 11 Quinnipiac and Princeton on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (7pm), respectively, at the Houston Field House. St. Lawrence visits Yale and Brown next weekend.
