NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Phoebe Staenz recorded a hat trick to lead the Yale University women’s hockey team to a 7-2 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Friday night at Ingalls Rink. With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 3-1-1 (1-1-1 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 3-7-1 (1-2-0 ECAC Hockey).

The scoring came early for Yale, starting with a diving power play goal from Krista Yip-Chuck at 4:44 of the first. A goal by sophomore defenseman Julia Yetman gave Yale a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

RPI got within 2-1 on a goal by forward Katie Rooney at 5:20 of the second, setting the tone for a period in which the Engineers outshot Yale, 14-7. The Bulldogs eventually expanded their lead to 4-1 on goals by Staenz and Murray, ending Selander’s night after just 31:48 and 14 saves.

Kira Bombay came on in relief and RPI closed within 4-2 on a goal by forward Sabrina Repaci at 13:29 of the second.

Yale then put the game away with a big third period, outshooting the Engineers 21-5 in the final frame and scoring three goals. Staenz scored twice in a span of less than seven minutes to finish off her hat trick, and freshman defenseman Saroya Tinker added a final highlight by scoring on a power play at 16:44 for her first career goal.

Yale hosts Union Saturday (3pm), while the Engineers visit Brown (3pm).
