RYE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women’s ice hockey team broke out of their scoring slump with an offensive explosion against the Nichols College Bison Saturday afternoon, finding the back of the net nine times to pick up a much needed win in New England Hockey Conference play.
Freshman Jordan Roetzer (Buffalo, N.Y./Niagara Junior Purple Eagles) had a huge game for Manhattanville, picking up five points on two goals and three assists. Sophomore Cassandra Kent (Lake Placid, NY/Northwood) and Jenifer Machin also scored twice in the win for Manhattanville, and juniors Lindsay Diot (Bethel, Conn./Boston Shamrocks) and Kayley Romano (Viera, Fla./Boston Shamrocks), and freshman Kat Reilly (Holbrook, N.Y./Boston Shamrocks (JWHL)) each tallied a goal apiece for the Valiants.
In goal for the Valiants, junior Olivia Drew (York, Maine/Portland Jr. Pirates) recorded her first shutout of the season, stopping eight shots on the afternoon to pick up her fourth win of the season.
After being held scoreless for 224:42 of action entering today’s contest, the Valiants (7-12-0 overall, 5-7-0 NEHC) broke out of their offensive slump with the nine-goal output and a season-high 60 shots on goal in the win. Roetzer got the scoring started for Manhattanville on a wrist shot from sophomore Monika Molnar (Budapest, Hungary/Vasas HC). Machin continued the scoring for Manhattanville in the opening period with a goal from Roetzer and sophomore Maeve O’Brien (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy).
The Valiants continued their offensive prowess in the second period, tallying four goals while holding the Bison (3-16-0 overall, 1-10-0 NEHC) without a shot in the period. Roetzer picked up her third point of the day with an assist on a goal by Romano.
Roetzer picked up her third assist of the day on a great shot by Machin early in the third period. She rounded out her big day for Manhattanville by scoring on the power play with 4:38 remaining in the game, burying a loose puck from senior Melissa Hauptman (Smithtown, N.Y./Sound Shore Warriors (MAWHL)) and Romano.
While the Bison were unable to get much offense going, they had their best chance of the afternoon when Julia Mastrototaro picked up a loose puck near the blue line and came in on a breakaway against the junior goaltender, but was turned away with a scrambling kick save.
With the win, the Valiants pick up their tenth point in conference play this season and remain in a solo sixth place among Division III teams in the New England Hockey Conference. After having the week off, Manhattanville returns to action with two home games next weekend when they host Salve Regina and Amherst.
