Two of the brightest freshmen in women’s division III hockey on New York state teams squared off when the SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team went up against SUNY Canton on Saturday afternoon at Maxcy Ice Arena.
Rookie counterparts Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y. / Rochester Edge) for the Bears and Jessica Kistabish (Pikogan, Quebec / Ontario Hockey Academy) for the Kangaroos were showcased in the team’s second meeting this season.
Back on December 3, Ott scored twice to propel Potsdam to a 4-1 victory. Ott’s consistency has resulted in the ECAC West Rookie of the Week nod on six occasions. Kistabish was also a factor in that game as she assisted on a Karley Cree score for the ‘Roos lone goal.
But, but on Saturday, it was Kistabish’s turn to put on a show as the 5-foot-7 forward put 11 shots on net and registered a hat trick including the winning goal just 1:25 into overtime as Canton topped Potsdam 4-3 in a nonconference tilt.
Cree also scored and freshman Shayna Dominique was stingy in goal making 41 saves for the ‘Roos (8-13-3). Kistabish now had 16 goals on the season.
For Ott, her unassisted goal with 7:52 remaining in the third period knotted the game at 2-2 after she got the goaltender leaning in one direction on a one-on-one situation. The goal, her 18th of the season, broke the program’s single-season mark for most goals in one season.
Kistabish answered almost immediately just 21 seconds later on an assist from Rhea Coad.
Potsdam senior assistant captain Amanda Lucky (Kanata, Ontario / Clarkson University) forced overtime on an assisted score, her eighth of the season, with just 1:45 left.
Amanda Lucky also struck earlier in the game when Alyssa Brockman (Fairport, N.Y. / Rochester Edge) and her assisted senior forward Jessica Silveira (Brampton, Ontario / Brampton Thunder) for the game’s opening goal at 12:19 into the first period.
Silveira has been red hot with 14 points in her last nine games. Silveira leads the Bears with 28 points while Ott has 27 points.
Potsdam (11-8-3) held a 44-23 shots on goal advantage, but was unable to get a shot off in the overtime period. Ott was called for interference just 43 seconds into the extra session, giving Canton a huge power play opportunity that it was able to convert.
The Roos wound up making good on 2-of-6 power plays. Potsdam was 1-of-5 on such chances.
