HAMILTON – Nick Saracino tallied two goals, including the game winner less than four minutes into the third, to lift No. 3 Providence to a 4-3 victory over Colgate in collegiate men’s ice hockey action Saturday at Starr Rink.

Saracino opened the scoring midway through the first period and notched his second of the game early in the third to power the defending national champions to a sweep of the host Raiders.

Garrett Gamaz and Jake Walman also scored for Providence. Seniors Darcy Murphy and Tylor Spink, and sophomore Evan Peterson found the back of the net for Colgate.

After trading goals in the first period, Providence used tallies from Gamez and Walman to build a 3-1 advantage just past the halfway point of the contest.

Murphy pulled the Raiders within one on a power play goal at the 14:49 mark of the second, but Saracino netted his second of the game 3:55 into the third to restore Providence’s two-goal margin.

Colgate quickly made it a one-goal game again thanks to Spink, who notched his third goal of the season only 50 seconds after Saracino’s tally, but the Friars kept the Raiders from netting the equalizer to remain undefeated.

Rookie netminder Hayden Hawkey was victorious in his first collegiate start, turning aside 24 shots for the Friars. Junior Charlie Finn was between the pipes for the Raiders, finishing the contest with 35 saves.

“It was a great bounce-back game for us. I thought we had much better energy and our effort was better. We generated a lot more opportunities than we did last night. A couple of bounces and it could have gone our way tonight. That’s a good sign for us. ”
