PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The top-ranked Plattsburgh State women’s ice hockey team saw its 13-game winning streak snapped in a 3-2 loss against No. 9 Oswego State in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women’s West action at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals go to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the league, while the Lakers at 7-1 and 5-1. Both teams’ rankings are according to the latest U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) Division III national poll. Plattsburgh State had not lost since Feb. 13, 2016, and the Cardinals’ 24 home-game winning streak also ended on Sunday.

Plattsburgh State senior Melissa Sheeran (Schaghticoke, N.Y./Millbrook School) and sophomore Courtney Moriarty (Estero, Fla./Northfield Mount Hermon) both scored. Senior Jordan Lipson (Davis, Calif./Pomfret School) provided two assists, while classmate Melissa Ames (Rochester, N.Y./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite U-19) and junior Kayla Meneghin (Clifton, N.J./The Gunnery) both had one assist. Senior Camille Leonard (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Jr. Hornets) totaled 15 saves.

Oswego State freshman Jacquelin White scored and assisted once, with junior Olivia Ellis and freshman Eryn Stewart both netting one goal. Senior Alexa Aramburu contributed two assists and junior Mariah Madrigal stopped 48 shots.

Plattburgh State owned a 1-0 lead during its 11-shot first period. Cardinal sophomore Karen Hudson (Sykesville, Md./Washington Pride) found herself on a breakaway after coming out of the penalty box at 9:07, but Madrigal kicked away the shot. Moriarty then put the hosts up, 1-0, at 12:41. Lipson fed a left-circle pass that was redirected by Ames into Madrigal’s leg pads but the rebound bounced to Moriarty, who stuffed home the puck inside the right post. Oswego State tried to equalize with 5:46 but Leonard snagged senior Alyssa Brockmann’s right-circle bid. Plattsburgh State sophomore Ashley Songin (Springville, N.Y./Nichols School) ended the opening period with a point-blank shot that Madrigal stopped.

Both teams netted one goal in the second period. Just 62 seconds into play, Lipson’s mid-slot shot kicked out to Sheeran, who deposited the power-play puck into the lower right side to give the hosts a 2-0 lead. At 11:33, Oswego State senior Ashley Lyman saw her low right-circle bid gloved by Leonard. The Lakers then broke onto the board at 15:48 after a defensive poke check in the Cardinals’ zone caromed to White, who snapped the puck over Leonard’s left shoulder to put the score at 2-1.

Despite being outshot 17-7, the Lakers tallied two third-period goals. While accounting for just one power-play shot during a mid-period player-advantage chance, the Lakers pulled even on Stewart’s goal at 11:06 when she buried a rebound off of freshman Julieann White’s initial bid. Oswego State then converted on its next chance just 21 seconds later as Ellis gave the Lakers a 3-2 edge. Leonard was pulled for the extra attacker with 1:25 remaining, and the puck never left the Cardinals’ offensive zone, with five shots going on net. Junior Megan Crandell (Fullerton, Calif./Saint Norbert) hit the left post with 31 seconds to go and Lipson’s final shot sailed over the crossbar.

Plattsburgh State travels to Castleton University for a non-conference contest on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
