Dr Byron Hyde's Seminar on Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

0

Jigsaw Logo
Do you have, or know someone who has Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Fibromyalgia?
The ACT ME/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Society is hosting a Free Public Seminar by Dr Byron Hyde of Nightingale Research Foundation, Ottawa, Canada.
Time: 1.30 pm on Saturday,4 September
Venue: Southern Cross Club,Woden
Information: T 6290 1984 E:[email protected]. (event is NOT rsvp)
Dr Hyde’s talk will cover the latest research into Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E.), and Fibromyalgia. He will also be discussing diagnosis and treatment, understanding the complexities of these illnesses, and effects on children.
About Dr Byron Hyde and the Nightingale Research Foundation
Dr Hyde is one of the few physicians worldwide whose practice has consisted solely of the investigation of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E.) and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)patients since 1984. Dr. Hyde collaborated with over 100 experts to edit and publish in 1992 the first comprehensive and authoritative medical reference book on M.E. and CFS.
In order to widen resources to investigate M.E., CFS and related illnesses, Dr Hyde founded the Nightingale Research Foundation in 1988. Nightingale is dedicated to explore, understand and treat patients disabled with M.E. and CFS, fibromyalgia-type illnesses and post-immunization injuries.
Any male, female, child or adult can have M.E. or CFS. Those who have M.E. or CFS usually get the illness between the ages of 12-55 and many children are included in the population of those with M.E. and CFS-like disease. Up to 70 per cent of people with M.E. or CFS are female. A disproportionate number of people with the condition are professionals and semiprofessionals in the teaching, medical and associated disciplines.
The Foundation chose the Tiger for its logo since the animal is a natural killer and “one of the first scientific benchmarks of M.E. and CFS was the fact that patients lacked active natural killer cells.” (NRF website) Natural killer (or NK) cells are an essential part of the immune system.
Today, Nightingale’s priorities are individual patient-based research with total body/brain investigation of M.E. and CFS patients as well as the development of a sophisticated database to consolidate these findings for analysis and publication.
The uniqueness of Dr Hyde’s work is in its emphasis on total body mapping of all systems and organs so that he can understand the nature and complexity of the M.E. and CFS patients’ illnesses. Dr Hyde also manages a detailed data base of information based on his investigations into acute onset and gradual onset central nervous system dysfunction associated with fatigue and pain syndrome. This is from individual M.E. and CFS case research of over 3,000 patients and is more detailed than any other such research in North America.
The Foundation also has a separate, longitudinal database with some records spanning over twenty years. Such resources have led to new findings about the illnesses and Dr Hyde believes the vast majority of gradual onset type CFS patients were misdiagnosed with many subsequently found to have other conditions.
About the ACT ME/CFS Society

TOMMY FLEMING RETURNS DOWN UNDER

He has overcome the most serious of setbacks, boasts a legion of dedicated fans, has proven his place in the world of entertainment and has confirmed his tour in Australia in 2010. TOMMY FLEMING is returning!

Unquestionably one of Ireland’s most successful entertainers, TOMMY FLEMING’S career has been celebrated with 32 Platinum Albums, invitations to represent Ireland at major international events, sell-out concerts and adoration from his audiences.

TOMMY FLEMING will perform at selected Australian cities late this year with a schedule that will most likely mean he won’t be found tanning himself whilst in Australia at Bondi Beach or the Great Barrier Reef. That said, if the opportunity arises to escape the tour for a few days Tommy has already created a list of destinations to visit. “If I somehow get the chance I would love to see Uluru or go Great White cage diving off South Australia. I did it once in South Africa and it was one of the greatest thrills of my life”, said Tommy in anticipation of his September and October visit.

Known for not only his powerhouse voice but also his quick wit and humour, the humble and proud Irishmen is looking forward to his return to our shores on the back of his sell-out 2009 season. His formal introduction last year acquired new fans and cemented his name in those who saw him.

Comparing his homeland with Australia, Tommy commented on the similarities he had seen, “The Australian audiences are sincerely the best. They get so involved and become part of the show and they completely get my sense of humour which can border on a little dangerous if I get very relaxed in the show. It’s like we get each other. We’re probably all related somewhere along the line. We have the same sense of humour, we love our beer and we don’t take ourselves too seriously.”

The youngest of six children, Tommy’s singing career started while still at school. These days, TOMMY FLEMING remains one of the most sought after Irish artists of the decade and is on his way to being firmly established as an international sensation.

This aside, it has not been an easy road to success for Tommy. Just when things were really starting to take off for him in 1998, he was almost killed when he was involved in a car accident while on a promotional tour near his native Sligo. Narrowly escaping from a burning car, he was left with a broken neck and a metal brace, putting both his life and career in serious jeopardy.

The ordeal only strengthened his will to express himself through music. “It kind of gave me the incentive to fight for my career and fight for what I wanted. Sometimes I think that it was the best thing that ever happened to me,” he says.

As part of his long road to recovery, Tommy made a decision that even his closest friends or family did not expect. He took six months off and flew to Africa to work with the Irish aid agency GOAL where he was a field operative in war torn and famine stricken Sudan.

Commenting about his time in Sudan, Tommy said “It was the best and possibly worst decision I have ever made. Working with so much death and hardship made me realise who I am and how lucky I am. I don’t take things for granted anymore.”
His conquering of adversity and desire to succeed has taken him from the accident, near death, to Sudan and now to being held in the esteem of noted personalities around the world.

International celebrities are also considered fans of the ambitious Tommy Fleming with actor LIAM NEESON commenting, “.that one’s a hard act to follow – I hope he doesn’t take up acting”, after hearing Tommy.

Add to this ERIC CLAPTON’S comment of “The best I have ever heard, bar none”, for musical praise, you know the lad from the land of leprechauns boasts something special that’s not to be missed.

Tommy Fleming is touring nationally in 2010. Tour dates are set with tickets now on sale and already proving popular. Tommy Fleming will appear in concert at the following venues:

Live & Love Short Film Competition to destigmatise HSV (Herpes Simplex Virus)

0

Budding film makers are being challenged to shoot cinematic flicks designed to destigmatise HSV – the Herpes Simplex Virus commonly associated with cold sores and genital herpes – as part of the inaugural Live & Love Short Film Competition.

The competition, coordinated by The Australian Herpes Management Forum (AHMF), is inviting students (film, media, journalism, advertising and medicine), the film and media industry, and pop culture enthusiasts nation-wide to create high-quality, 30-second- long films that explore HSV and educate viewers about its prevalence, while encouraging open discussion about the virus in order to reduce its stigma.

The finalist films will be showcased, and the winners announced at the exclusive Live & Love Short Film Competition Awards – a red carpet event to be held in Sydney on Tuesday, October 19, 2010 – the evening prior to Herpes Awareness Day (Wednesday, October 20, 2010).

According to award winning film maker, Genevieve Clay, short films are an excellent medium for opening up dialogue about issues within society that are not often explored or discussed.

“Short films allow viewers to be transported from the real world for long enough to open their minds to subjects they would normally dismiss.

“Challenging people to create films on topics considered to be taboo, such as HSV, is a great way to explore the raw creative talents of film makers aiming to alter public perception through their work,” said Ms Clay.

This groundbreaking competition, themed Let’s talk about HSV, encourages entrants to use short films to debunk myths about herpes and facilitate conversation in the community about a virus affecting one in eight sexually active Australian adults.

Film makers have until September 24, 2010 to write, shoot and edit short films designed to destigmatise herpes. The Live & Love website, www.liveandlove.com.au, provides entrants with competition and voting details and information about HSV and support services, including a list of sexual health experts.

Finalists will be invited to Sydney to mingle with a host of arts industry representatives, including Genevieve Clay and the well known ABC series ‘Beached Az’ creators, Anthony MacFarlane & Jarod Green, at the Live & Love Short Film Competition awards screening on Tuesday, October 19, 2010. The event, to be held in Sydney, will showcase five shortlisted finalist entries and five People’s Choice award winners before the official announcement of the Judges’ Choice award.

A total prize purse of $15,000 is up for grabs. The winner of the Judges’ Choice Award, to be decided by a panel of celebrity, medical and patient judges, will clinch $10,000 cash, while the five People’s Choice Award winners will take away $1,000 each.
The People’s Choice Awards will be granted to the films that receive the highest number of public votes at www.liveandlove.com.au.

According to sexual health physician, Dr Catriona Ooi, “The Live & Love Short Film Competition presents a fantastic opportunity for film makers to encourage discussion about HSV and pass on the message that people living with the virus are not alone.

“By talking publicly about HSV, we can help break the stigma and shame felt by those affected,” Dr Ooi said.

To register in the Live & Love Short Film Competition, or for more information, go to www.liveandlove.com.au.

Bundanoon Highland Gathering Inc. Presents "Tossing the Caber"

Tossing the Caber:
“Desire for strength is greatest where manliness is strongest”

“When you have the caber balanced in the cup of your hand, a
little dancing around can help you keep yourself in control, but
the best advice there is if you feel you are losing it is ‘get out from
under it!'” From an instruction book

Surely the quintessential event at any Highland Games is the tossing of the caber. It has been written about since the 16th Century, yet most people today see it as a bit eccentric, if not quite a mad thing to attempt. It looks
difficult and it is.

What are its origins?

According to David Webster in his book Scottish Highland Games, the most probable is that it was devised by Scottish woodsmen in their leisure time and maybe came from the practice of throwing tree trucks into the river for easy transport. An old saying tells us that the “Desire for strength is greatest where manliness is strongest” so it is more than likely that contests
involving strength and skill were popular with these brawny lads. With logs readily available, caber tossing would be easy to arrange and would appeal to their taste in sport. So foresters most likely brought the sport to
the games. Another theory lays the origin in a military discipline to breach fortifications and barriers — yes Scotland is a harsh country requiring hard men!
The dimensions of the caber (or cabar in Gaelic) can vary but the norm is 18ft (5.3m) long and weighs over 150lbs (68kg).
Contrary to popular belief, the caber is not thrown for distance but as a measurement of strength, accuracy and skill. The idea is to attempt to throw and upturn the caber so that it rests like a hand of a clock at 12 noon.

The winner will be the toss that comes as close as possible to this position. Three tosses are allowed and all three are scored to determine the winner.
As you watch the action on the field see if you can identify the 4 basic steps;
. The ‘pick’ where the competitor lifts the caber off the
group — and the other get well out of the way!
. The ‘approach’ where the athlete get momentum
going by running forward but first performs the little
balancing dance
. The ‘plant’ when both feet take root to provide a good
throwing platform
. The ‘toss’ where the caber is actually flipped end over
end (or at least attempted)

Of course in this era of equal opportunity we welcome young fit lassies to take the challenge and so at Brigadoon we have a women caber tossing championship alongside that of the lads.
Enjoy the spectacle and marvel at the strength and skill!
Tossing the Caber:

Educational enlightenment in Shanghai

Shanghai - a bustling city.
Educational enlightenment in Shanghai
By Rama Gaind

You don’t need to check out reports and delve into facts and figures to realise that more Indians are now travelling abroad than ever before. Compared to a decade ago, it’s not uncommon these days to see, bump into or even talk to Indians on the streets of a foreign land!
It’s not unusual then to build up acquaintances, and to feel an instant comraderie, with someone you’ve never met before – even if it is for a short time.
While popular destinations for Indians have always been the US, UK or Europe, now Singapore, Australia, the Middle East and China are proving to be the favoured spots.
Even meeting one Indian on my visits overseas I have found to be a bonus in the past, but on my recent visit to China, it was heart-warming to meet a few of them during my short stay.
At the airport in Shanghai, I spoke briefly with Sanjay Jaitly who had come to investigate business options from Kanpur; another man from Chennai, who was working there, said a fleeting hello; I saw three separate family groups at my hotel, in the street and at the Shanghai Museum, all supporting cameras, eagerly checking out the sights.
Colonel Rajwant Singh, of Jalandhar, and Brigadier Raza, of Pakistan, were taking in the sights of the museum along with a group of defence personnel and mingling with another contingent from Bangladesh.
After having spoken to my fellow countrymen, the few hours I spent at this large museum of ancient Chinese art was further made memorable.
Boasting 120,000 Chinese art pieces and archaeological findings, the Shanghai Museum is an architectural showpiece. Seen sideways, it resembles an ancient tripod, with a glassed rooftop dome which is modelled on a Han Dynasty mirror.
Permanent exhibits feature an amazing array of paintings, ceramics and bronzes, among other artefacts
Divided into 11 galleries and three exhibition halls, the galleries cover most of the major categories of Chinese art: Ancient Bronze, Ancient Ceramics, Paintings, Calligraphy, Ancient Sculpture, Ancient Jade, Coins, Ming and Qing Furniture, Seals, and Minority Nationalities.
Exquisite bronze ware of the Shang and Zhou dynasties contribute to an understanding of ancient civilization with more than 400 pieces.
Among the more than 500 pieces in the ceramics collection are artwork from various dynasties, such as painted and grey pottery from the Neolithic age, the well-known tri-colored glazed pottery from the Tang Dynasty, blue, white and black glazed as well as painted porcelain from the Song, Jin and Liao, and the brilliant works from Jingdezhen, Jiangxi, the centre of the industry during the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties.
The Gallery of Chinese Ancient Sculpture focuses mainly on Buddhist sculptures, while
Chinese paintings and calligraphy provide an insight into the overwhelming traditions and exclusive national styles.
In 8000-year history of jade carving, China has produced countless great artists and highly skilled artisans. Jade in ancient China was both decoration and the symbol of wealth and power.
Over the years, minority nationalities have contributed some of their own colourful cultures which can also be viewed from clothes to textiles, artwork, sculptures, pottery and metal, lacquer and bamboo wares.
Enlightenment comes in many ways, but to appreciate the educational aspects, a visit to the museum is essential. In line with a Chinese saying: “It is better to see for oneself than to hear many times”.

'Inception' is a challenging, mesmerising journey

0

Film: Inception
Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard
Screenwriter/co-Producer/Director: Christopher Nolan
Reviewer: Rama Gaind

It’s a mind-boggling premise, but one that makes for compelling viewing: a rogue operative intent on extracting people’s secrets after ‘entering’ their minds.
That’s exactly what Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) does: as an infiltrator of other people’s minds, he’s able to roam at will through their dreamscapes and pinch the buried secrets.
What’s more, this ‘extractor’ goes a step further – therein comes the film’s title – and plants a dangerous thought in their mind. How audacious is that?
This sci-fi thriller is multi-layered where the extraordinary screenplay challenges us to envisage that time simultaneously moves at four different speeds – and shows how in one particular scene.
Intellectually challenging, British director Christopher Nolan (‘Batman the Dark Knight’, ‘Memento’) has excelled in the presentation of this bold concept.
Not only that, he has also presented images in a storyline that’s easily absorbed. Nolan weaves a multi-layered gossamer labyrinth that draws you in.
The film is said to be inspired by the experience of dream incubation and lucid dreaming.
The storyline for ‘Inception’ started developing almost 10 years ago. That took a lot of resilience and patience. It was certainly worth the wait: this is a phenomenal result on celluloid – and it’s just mesmerising!
