Beauts Sign 2nd-Round Draft Pick

0

BUFFALO – The Buffalo Beauts announced today that they have signed their 2021 2nd-round draft selection Anjelica Diffendal. The signing is Buffalo’s second for a 2021 draftee and their second one from Robert Morris University. Diffendal was the first pick in the second round of the 2021 NWHL Draft and the seventh player selected overall.

“I am most excited about getting the opportunity to be able to play at the next level and compete against some of the best athletes,” said Diffendal. “Buffalo has talented players and hopefully I will be able to contribute to the team’s success. They have great organization and I am thankful for the chance to be a part of it. l cannot wait to get started!”

A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Diffendal suited up for 122 NCAA games for her hometown RMU Colonials. Across that time the 6-foot skater tallied 24 goals, 16 assists and 40 points. Her finest offensive production came during her 2019-20 junior campaign when she set career highs for goals (9), assists (9) and points (18) through 36 games.

“We like a lot of what we see in Jell,” said Beauts General Manager Nate Oliver. “It is why we selected her as early as we did. For such a big body, she is a very deceptive player. If you look at the goals she has scored and the offense she has generated, you see that it is due to the fact that she can sneakily get behind the defense. We like her reach and her hockey sense. She is a quieter leader and earned a lot of respect during her time at RMU. We are very much looking forward to working with her.”

Diffendal is a product of the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program throughout her teenage years. She was only the third Pittsburgh-born player in RMU’s women’s hockey history. During her senior season she helped lead the Colonials to their first CHA Tournament championship since 2017. Diffendal’s eight tallies in 25 games en route to the championship tied her for third most among RMU skaters. Four of her 24 career NCAA goals were game-winners.

Diffendal is eager to show Beauts fans what she is capable of on the ice. For those who have not had a chance to see her play before, they are bound to enjoy her style and flair.

“I hope to impress the fans with my deceptive speed,” Diffendal said. “I tend to be explosive in the neutral zone and sometimes catch the defense off guard. My teammates also liked to point out my goal celebrations, so I am hoping to bring some of that to each game as well!”

Beauts Ink Top Draft Pick Emilie Harley

0

BUFFALO – The Buffalo Beauts announced that their 1st round selection in the 2021 NWHL Draft has signed a contract with the team. Defender/forward Emilie Harley will suit up for the Beauts in the upcoming 2021-22 season following a highly successful college career at Robert Morris University. The Beauts selected her with the second overall pick in the draft.

“As a female athlete, just to be a part of a draft at all is pretty special so I’m really thankful that the NWHL and the Beauts gave me that opportunity,” said Harley. “I’m honored to be the Beauts first selection in the draft. It makes me feel like the coaches and the GM have the confidence in me to play a big role for the team. Out of all the eligible picks, the fact that Buffalo chose me just validates my goal to play at the highest level possible and makes me feel like all my hard work has paid off.”

A native of Syracuse, New York, Harley played 130 NCAA games for the RMU Colonials. Across that time she scored 10 goals, 36 assists and 46 points. Four of Harley’s 10 career goals came on the power play. Showcasing her leadership abilities, she wore an “A” on her jersey during her 2020-21 senior season. Known primarily as a defender during her time for RMU, Harley also has experience at center.

“Emilie checks all of the boxes for us,” said Beauts GM Nate Oliver. “ She has awesome reach with the puck given her 6-foot frame, and she controls it very well once it’s on her stick. She skates strong and powerfully, and is confident in her stride. We love Emilie’s professionalism and her character. We knew going into the draft that we were getting a great hockey player who is also a top notch person. I think you’ll see her become a great ambassador for our game at the professional level. A player of her caliber and persona rarely comes along.”

Harley was a decorated player even before and during her collegiate career. She is a 2-time member of the USA U18 Development Camp in 2015 and 2016. Harley was a 2017 MVP for the Ontario Hockey Academy. As a sophomore at RMU she was named co-Student-Athlete of the Year in the CHA for posting a 4.0 GPA as a biology major. Harley was selected to the College Hockey for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion initiative – a group comprising players, coaches and administrators from men’s and women’s college hockey across the country working to promote cultural change throughout the sport.Harley is excited to bring her game to Buffalo and suit up for the Beauts organization.
“As a defenseman I think I see the ice really well and distributing the puck is one of my best skills,” said Harley,” so hopefully that will give us more time in the offensive zone. I’m a solid defensive player and my height gives me an advantage to keep my opponent away from our net which is my main goal. My experience as a forward also gives me the confidence to make plays or skate with the puck to try and score.”

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – RIT head men’s hockey coach Wayne Wilson recently appointed former Tiger standout Shane Madolora the program’s Volunteer Goalie Coach. Madolora returns to the Tiger bench for the first time since 2012 after capping one of the most prolific goalie careers in RIT history.

“Shane will be a great addition to our staff and we are excited to welcome him back to RIT,” said Wilson. “He was one of the best goalies to put the pads on for us, and we look forward to him sharing his wealth of knowledge and experiences as we further develop our goalies.”

Madolora established single-season program records as a junior which still stand, leading the nation with a .935 save percentage to go along with a stingy 1.93. Colgate’s Borges Promoted To Associate Head Coach

0

HAMILTON – Colgate Men’s Hockey Head Coach Don Vaughan has announced the promotion of Dana Borges to Associate Head Coach.

Now having wrapped up his third season, Borges joined the Colgate hockey program as an assistant coach for the 2018-19 campaign after previously serving as a volunteer assistant coach for the Raiders in the 2016-17 season.

Dana Borges Promotion

“Dana is one of the brightest young minds in college hockey and in my opinion, he is one of the very best coaches in the country,” Vaughan said. “He is an excellent recruiter and clearly understands what it takes for a student-athlete to succeed at Colgate, both on the ice and in the classroom. He works incredibly hard and has helped us clearly define our culture. I am grateful for his loyalty and all he brings to Colgate Hockey, and to the campus and Hamilton communities.”

Borges’ most recent recruiting class included two players who were named to the ECAC Hockey All-Rookie Team, while the group included the addition of two NHL Draftees.

“Dana’s promotion to Associate Head Coach and added responsibilities is just one more step towards his goal of becoming a head coach,” Vaughan said. “I appreciate the support of our Athletic Director Dr. Nicki Moore and for her understanding like mine of the value Dana Borges brings to the Colgate Hockey program.”

In his first season with the Raiders, Borges helped lead the Colgate program to four wins over nationally ranked opponents in the 2018-19 campaign. Borges worked extensively with special teams where the Raiders held their opponents scoreless on the power play on 16 occasions.

“We talk about trust within our program on a daily basis,” Borges said. “To have earned the trust of Coach Vaughan, our administration, and our players to take on an expanded role is an honor.

“Coach Vaughan has provided me with incredible leadership and autonomy necessary to grow during my time at Colgate. Together, we have revamped our recruiting philosophies and installed a student-athlete centered development model and both are already yielding great results. Colgate has become my home and I am excited to see continued growth within the program.”

Borges continues to connect with Raiders who go on to play professional hockey in the ECHL, AHL, and European leagues after their time at Colgate. Last season, Bobby McMann ’20 signed with the Toronto Marlies, the AHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the NHL.

“Dana has always shown strong abilities as a coach through both his leadership on the bench and his passion to develop players individually,” said McMann. “He works every day studying the game to learn the latest skills and habits out there so that he can provide the team and players with the best opportunity for success.

“He played a huge role in my development by helping me improve not only my skating and skills on the ice but also helping me deal with the pressures I faced off the ice. Dana has always been someone to connect well with the players and will undoubtedly continue to lead the program in the right direction.”

Prior to coming to Hamilton, Borges joined the University of Alaska-Anchorage men’s hockey program as an assistant coach and spent the 2017-18 season at Williams College (MA) as an assistant coach. Getting his start in collegiate coaching, Borges spent two and a half seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Stonehill College, where the Skyhawks went 42-25-8.

“Dana’s passion for the game is unparalleled,” said graduate captain Paul McAvoy. “He’s always searching for innovative ways to improve our collective and personal development through his commitment, leadership, and loyalty. Over the last few years, Dana has helped me grow as a player, leader, and person in unimaginable ways. I could not be prouder and more excited for this next step in Dana’s coaching career.”

Over the same time period, Borges served as the USA Hockey Associate Coach in Chief for the Massachusetts District-Director of ADM as well as a camp coach at the 2016 USA Hockey National U-17 Camp. Borges is still active in the USA Hockey coaching community today.

A four-year letter winner at Stonehill, Borges served as a two-time captain and was named Northeast-10 Man of the Year in 2013, as well as a Capital One All-American. After his successful collegiate career at Stonehill, Borges played professionally for one season with the Evry Peaux Rouges of the French Division.

A native of Taunton, Massachusetts, Borges graduated Magna Cum Laude from Stonehill in 2013 with a degree in sociology.

Beauts Draft Seven In 2021 NWHL Draft

0

The Buffalo Beauts made a splash at the 2021 NWHL Draft on Tuesday evening. Thanks to trades earlier in the year, the Beauts had seven total picks, including the second overall pick in the draft.

The Beauts used their first round pick to select Emilie Harley, a 6’0” tall forward/defender who played for four seasons at Robert Morris University. The Beauts traded their first overall pick to Connecticut in exchange for the second overall pick and 14th overall pick in the 2021 NWHL Draft.

“I’m so happy to be joining the Beauts organization. Being drafted is a really rare and special moment as an athlete and it’s one I will remember forever,” said Harley on her selection. “I feel really grateful for this chance to continue my hockey career and I’m looking forward to the challenge of such a high level of competition. I know I’ll be surrounded by nothing but good energy and genuine people with Nate, Rhea and this team and I’m excited to get started.

“I had really good conversations with RMU’s head coach Paul Colontino about Emilie when we were first inquiring about her. I have a ton of respect for Paul, and he put it to me this way: ‘Nate – Emilie is the player that you want. She’s the one’. And he was exactly right,” said Beauts general manager Nate Oliver. “We love Emilie’s ability to play either defense or forward. Being six feet tall she obviously has tremendous reach. I think with the time that she has spent playing center as well as D she has developed hard, crisp passing and has really good vision on the ice.”

The Beauts used their second round pick to pick up another sizable addition, also from Robert Morris University. Buffalo drafted forward Anjelica Diffendal, a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native, who finished her career at RMU with 40 points in 122 career games.

“It has been awesome as a female athlete to watch the NWHL grow and I am honored to be drafted, becoming a part of this community,” said Diffendal. “I am very excited to get the opportunity to play for the Beauts. They have an amazing program, and I cannot wait to begin this journey!”

In the third round of the draft, the Beauts had three consecutive picks with the 13th, 14th, and 15th overall selections. The Beauts picked up their third third-round pick in a trade last season, acquiring Boston’s 2021 third-round pick in exchange for their second-round pick in the 2020 draft.

The Beauts started off their third round selecting Kennedy Ganser. Ganser is a forward coming from the University of Alberta, and Beauts fans will be glad to see this player on Buffalo’s draft board – Ganser was Autumn McDougall’s center during their time together with the Pandas. The 5’3” forward scored 85 points in 112 U Sport games, averaging .76 points per game.

With their second pick in the third round, the Beauts selected defender Anna Zíková from the University of Maine. The 5’6” blueliner put up 25 points in 63 NCAA games, and at the age of 23, is a four-time member of the Czech Republic women’s national team. During her time in the Czech Republic national team pipeline, she’s picked up a bronze medal at the U18 level in 2014, won a gold medal at the 2015 Division 1A Women’s World Championships, and was named one of the three best players at the 2016 Women’s World Junior Championships.

The Beauts used the 15th overall pick to select Missy Segall, a forward from Hamilton College. In 76 games, the Wellesley, Massachusetts native scored 51 total points.

After a whirlwind third round, the Beauts made their sixth selection of the evening in the fourth round, choosing defender Allison Attea from Holy Cross. The 5’7” defender finished her NCAA career with 20 points in 111. Attea will also get to return home with the Beauts – she’s a Buffalo, New York native.

Finally, the Beauts wrapped up the 2021 draft by selecting defender Casey Traill from Castleton University. The South Shields, Great Britain native put up 33 points in 93 games with Castleton, and though she’s just 22 years old, has already represented Great Britain at the national level. She’s played for Great Britain at the U18 team three times and has also been on the senior national team for three seasons. She is the first British player to be drafted in NWHL history.

“I think that as our league continues to grow and build that it will become more imperative for teams to scout talent outside of North America.  Zíková I have known for 7 years or so, so it was about waiting for the right time to select her…Her caliber as a defender and a shot-blocker go a long way,” said Oliver. “Casey Traill is a player whom we are looking to develop and whom we believe can benefit us in the long term. She has plenty of international experience as well. I think as time goes on people will be impressed with the level of talent that British players possess and continue to develop… With selections like Zíková and Traill we feel that we did our homework and found players that other teams might have overlooked.”

Midway through the period, the U.S. had its first power play opportunity and wasted little time, cycling the puck up high until Wallace delivered a pass from the far dot into the slot, giving Farmer an open net to put the U.S. up 1-0. The U.S. continued to push, with Pauls forcing another turnover to spring Roybal into the zone on an offensive rush.

Roybal pushed the puck up to David Eustace (Stoneham, Mass.) and Travis Dodson (Deming, N.M.) finished the play putting the puck under the arm of Larocque.Canada scored on the power play off a cross-ice pass out of the reach of Steve Cash (Overland, Mo.) with 1:06 left in the period to cut the U.S. lead in half. Team USA spent most of the second period possessing the puck, and extended its lead to 3-1 at 4:20 with a two-man advantage.

Pauls scored from the side of the right circle off a feed from Wallace after Farmer won the faceoff. Roybal followed up the power play effort with back-to-back scoring opportunities, but to no avail. The U.S. went up, 4-1, after Wallace delivered a pass from behind his own net to the far blue line, springing Farmer loose on a breakaway.

Farmer handled the puck under the front of his sled, pulled the puck to his forehand, and tucked it beyond the outstretched Larocque. The U.S. killed off a Canada power play early in the third period to maintain momentum. Eustance added the fifth goal for Team USA at 8:27 putting one high over Larocque from point-blank range off a nifty cross-ice feed from Dodson.

Royal also drew an assist on the play.Cash picked up the win in the U.S. net as Team USA outshot Canada by a 39-1 count.
