Men’s National Team Defeats Sweden

0
SOCHI, Russia – Thatcher Demko (San Diego, Calif.) stopped all 28 shots he faced, as the U.S. Men’s National Under-18 Team blanked Sweden, 4-0, here this evening at Shayba Arena in the quarterfinal round at the 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation Under-18 Men’s World Championship. Team USA moves on to the semifinals against the winner of Germany/Russia.
“We knew that we’d have to be at our very best facing a talented Sweden team,” said Don Granato, head coach of the U.S. National Under-18 Team. “Our goal is to get stronger and stronger each game. We’re happy with the performance today, but will continue to work hard tomorrow.”
Team USA opened scoring at 13:14 of the first frame on the power play. Will Butcher (Sun Prairie, Wis.) sent a shot wide of the net that caromed back to him just inside the blue line. Butcher blasted a shot past Swedish netminder Jonas Johansson for the goal. Tommy Vannelli (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Evan Allen(Sterling Heights, Mich.) earned assists on the play. The U.S. lead doubled when Hudson Fasching(Burnsville, Minn.) found Tyler Motte (St. Clair, Mich.), who put the puck under Johansson and into the net.
The U.S. found itself shorthanded on several occassions in the second stanza, including two extended 5-on-3 situations. Demko stood tall in net, blocking all eight shots he faced and the U.S. was successful in negating Sweden’s power-play opportunities to hold onto a 2-0 lead heading into the final frame. Team USA outshot Sweden, 20-8, in the period.
Skating on the power play, Tyler Kelleher (Longmeadow, Mass.) entered the zone and dropped a pass back to Michael McCarron (Macomb, Mich.). McCarron wristed a shot past Johansson at 6:50 for the score. Down three goals, Sweden pulled its netminder at the 13:06 mark. With an empty net, J.T. Compher(Northbrook, Ill.) iced the game at 15:08. Demko turned aside 12 shots in the period and 28 total in the victory for Team USA.
The U.S. Men’s National Under-18 Team will face the winner of the Germany/Russia game on Friday (April 26) at 8 p.m. local time (12 p.m. EDT), at the Bolshoy Ice Dome. The semifinal round game will be streamed live on FASTHockey.com. Team USA’s complete schedule can be found below.

USA Hockey Honored

0
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Hockey has been named the recipient of the 2013 Amazing Leader Award by the United States Olympic Committee, it was announced today. The Amazing Leader Award recognizes an individual or organization whose leadership in the Paralympic Movement has been transformative and who has mobilized and unified athletes, programs and organizations that improve the lives of people with physical and visual disabilities.
“We’re honored to be recognized by U.S. Paralympics with the Amazing Leader Award,” said Dave Ogrean, executive director of USA Hockey. “We’re an inclusive organization that works extremely hard to support both able-bodied and disabled athletes and this award is really a reflection of the thousands of volunteers across the country that champion those efforts.”
As the national governing body for both able-bodied and sled hockey, USA Hockey has been recognized for building a grassroots program that feeds into a successful high-performance pipeline. USA Hockey’s initiatives include an equipment lending program and the Sled Hockey Grant Program, which helps ease the initial financial burden of a new sled hockey program by providing five new sleds to a participating program. Additionally, USA Hockey has implemented player development camps that can identify athletes for the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team that has excelled on the international level, capturing the 2010 Paralympic gold medal and two of the last three International Paralympic Committee World Championships.
“The 2013 winners of our Paralympic Amazing Awards are delivering in the areas of grassroots development, elite high performance, sponsorship and philanthropy and telling the Paralympic story,” said USOC Chief of Paralympics Charlie Huebner. “Their success is making a significant impact on the delivery of high quality programming to persons with physical disabilities throughout the United States.”
The Amazing Leader Award will be presented to USA Hockey which during the USOC Paralympic Leadership Conference April 26-28 in Colorado Springs, Colo.

AMERKS CLOSE OUT REGULAR SEASON WITH 4-1 WIN OVER HAMILTON

0

(Hamilton, Ont.)… The Rochester Americans closed out the regular season with a 4-1 road victory over the Hamilton Bulldogs at Copps Coliseum on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Amerks finish with a 43-29-3-1 record and will advance to the 2013 Calder Cup Playoffs.

Maxime Legault, Matt Ellis, Phil Varone and Frederick Roy each scored for Rochester while Luke Adam collected two assists to give him five points (1+4) over his last two games.  Rookie Jason Beattie, a defenseman out of Niagara University, made his professional debut for the Amerks and registered his first point with an assist.  Goaltender Matt Hackett improved to 3-0-0 as an Amerk by stopping 30 of 31 shots on goal.

Hamilton’s Frederic St-Denis scored the Bulldogs’ lone goal while Jacob Gervais-Chouinard made 33 saves in goal.

After scoring three points in Saturday’s home win over Hamilton, Adam picked up where he left off in the first period of Sunday’s game by setting up Legault for the game’s first goal.  Alex Biega intercepted a pass along the blue line and moved the puck to Leagult, who left a drop pass for Adam and then drove to the net. Adam waited for Leagult to reach the slot and then sent a pass back to Leagult that the winger was able to tip in past the Hamilton netminder to give Rochester a 1-0 lead.

Hamilton tied the game at one early in the second period. With the Bulldogs on the power play, they worked the puck around the offensive zone before St-Denis fired a wrist shot from the right face-off dot that found its way through traffic and into the back of the net for the equalizer. Greg Pateryn and Alex Belzile collected the assists.

The Amerks regained their lead when Beattie set up Ellis for the rookie defenseman’s first professional point.  Beattie gained control of the puck along his own blue line and rushed up the right wing boards. After gaining entry into the Hamilton zone, Beattie sent a perfect cross-ice pass to Ellis, who pulled the puck to his backhand and slid it past Gervais-Chouinard for the goal. Rick Schofield also assisted on the goal.

Varone put the game out of reach when he made it 3-1 late in the third period, capitalizing on a feed from Dan Catenacci. Catenacci, who recorded a goal and an assist in his professional debut on Saturday night, made a cross-ice pass to Varone, who kicked the puck from his skates to his stick and knocked it in for the goal.

Frederick Roy then added an empty net goal off a pass from Adam, who recorded his second point of the night.

The Amerks have now finished the regular season and will advance to the Calder Cup Playoffs.  While an opponent and dates have not yet been determined, tickets for home games in the first round go on sale at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 22.

ROCHESTER, NY – Head Coach Scott McDonald and the RIT women’s hockey team announced its captains for the 2013-14 season. Juniors Celeste Brown (Great Falls, MT/National Sports Academy) and Lindsay Grigg (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Hornets) will serve as captains, while senior Melissa Bromley (Aurora, Ontario/Aurora Panthers) and junior Morgan Scoyne (Drumbo, Ontario/Stoney Creek Sabres) will serve as assistant captains. RIT enters its second season as a Division I program.

During my time at RIT, we’ve been fortunate to have a long line of strong leadership for our team captains,” said RIT Head Coach Scott McDonald, who recently completed his seventh season behind the bench in 2012-13. “These next four student-athletes will be no exception.  All have shown that they have the character on and off the ice to lead our program in the right direction. With the graduation of three multi-year captains and a large senior class, the role of team captain has been a vital position to establish during spring training.”

Brown, a forward, enjoyed a tremendous sophomore season with nine goals and 15 points, while playing at a plus-11. Brown was named the RIT Female Athlete of the Week and College Hockey America Player of the Week on Dec. 17. She recorded season-high totals of two goals and three assists in a 5-1 win over Lindenwood on Dec. 15. As a freshman in 2011-12, Brown scored the game-winning, go-ahead goal in the Division III National Championship game against Norwich.

Grigg, who has shuttled between forward and defense in her first two seasons with RIT, finished the 2012-13 season with 14 points on two goals and 12 assists. She is a tremendous two-way player, who can be counted on in any situation, from the power-play, even strength, and penalty killing units. Grigg recorded a season-high three points in a win over Sacred Heart on Jan. 19 and scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 win over Robert Morris on Jan. 4.

Bromley, a 5-foot-11 defenseman, recorded a plus-16 in 34 games to go along with six points during the 2012-13 season. Bromley scored her lone goal of the season on Dec. 8 at Ohio State and added five assists. She used her size and speed to emerge as a strong stay at home defender, and will be looked upon to play an even greater role in 2013-14

Scoyne, a defenseman who stands 5-foot-8, tallied 10 points in 37 games, while playing hard nosed defense. She scored two goals in 2012-13, including the game winner in a 3-0 win over Yale at Blue Cross Arena. She is expected to step in on RIT’s top defensive unit in 2013-14.

All four have been able to step up and we believe they will excel with their new responsibility of leading this program,” said McDonald. “Their work ethic on the ice, in the classroom and in the community will set the standard for this team and all future RIT women’s hockey players.”

The Tigers enjoyed an excellent transition to Division I in 2012-13, finishing with a .500 record (16-16-1) and advancing to the semifinals of the College Hockey America Postseason Tournament. RIT finished tied for third in the CHA standings and won its first two postseason contests as a Division I program.

In league play, RIT went 3-0-1 against 2012 Tournament Champion Robert Morris, while going 5-0-1 vs. league rival Penn State. Out of conference, RIT defeated ECAC foes Yale and Brown, while taking NCAA Tournament Participant North Dakota to the final buzzer in a one-goal defeat. Overall, RIT was involved in 17 one-goal games during the season and recorded a five-game unbeaten streak in the second half of the season.

Forwards Phil Varone (1+2) and Luke Adam (1+2) each finished with three points on the night while Dan Catenacci, making his professional debut, picked up his first pro points with a goal and an assist. Defenseman Nick Bailen registered the first multi-point game of his career with two assists on the night, and goaltender David Leggio stopped 29 of 30 shots to earn the win.  Maxime Legault and Evan Rankin (1+1) rounded out the scoring for Rochester, while Olivier Archambault scored the lone Hamilton goal.

In a first period that featured multiple power play chances for both teams, the Amerks scored the only marker on a goal by Adam. With the Amerks skating on a 4-on-3 advantage, Varone set Bailen up for a one-timer, and the rookie out of RPI blasted a shot through traffic that Adam tipped in past Hamilton goalie Dustin Tokarski to give Rochester a 1-0 lead at 18:41 of the opening period.

The Amerks extended their lead to 2-0 early in the second period as Catenacci scored his first career goal at 3:31 of the middle frame.  Varone picked up his second assist of the night as Catenacci tipped in his shot after Varone had collected a drop pass from Rankin and quickly snapped it on net.

Archambault got Hamilton on the board later in the second period with his first AHL goal. The rookie sprinted up the middle of the ice, through the neutral zone and in on Leggio with two Amerk defenders in close pursuit. Patrick Rissmiller was able to catch Archambault and poked the puck off the Bulldog forward’s stick, but the puck hit a skate and bounced right back to Archambault, who regained possession at the top of the crease and swept it past Leggio for the goal.

Rochester went back up by two goals at 12:57 of the second period as Varone scored to record his third point of the night.  Bailen wound up for a slap shot from the right point, but instead of shooting, passed across to Adam at the left face-off dot. Adam then fired a slap shot that trickled through Tokarski and came to rest in the crease. Varone was there to quickly pounce on the loose puck and slam it home for the goal.

Rochester tacked on two more goals in the third period as Adam set up Legault on a 2-on-1 to make it a 4-1 game.  Rankin then capped things off on another 2-on-1 rush, capitalizing on a feed from Catenacci.

The Amerks will bring the 2012-13 regular season to a close on Sunday, April 21 when they travel to Hamilton to face-off with the Bulldogs again.  Game time is slated for 3 p.m. with all the action on Sports 1280 WHTK.
