U.S. Men’s National Team Tops Finland, 4-1, at 2013 IIHF Men’s World Championship

Craig Smith Tallies Hat Trick; John Gibson Stops 31 Shots
HELSINKI – Craig Smith (Madison, Wis./Nashville Predators/Univ. of Wisconsin) scored three times and goaltender John Gibson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kitchener Rangers) made 31 saves to help the U.S. Men’s National Team to a 4-1 triumph over host Finland here tonight in preliminary round action of the 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation Men’s World Championship.

“It was certainly a terrific win for our team in a hostile environment,” said Joe Sacco, head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team. “We played a solid game, particularly in the third period. I thought John Gibson was very good in goal and we continue to work hard and build chemistry.”

In front of a sellout crowd of 12,484, Finland took the lead 5:53 into the opening period when Jarno Koskiranta chipped a bouncing puck past Gibson. Team USA evened the score at 17:36 when Smith andDavid Moss (Livonia, Mich./Phoenix Coyotes/Univ. of Michigan) connected on a rush. Moss sped across the blue line, stepped inside a defender at the left circle and fired a low shot that Smith deflected into the net.
Neither team scored in the second period, however, Gibson made a series of saves in the final minutes of the stanza to maintain the stalemate. With 1:47 left, he made perhaps his biggest stop when he dove from post-to-post to deny Juhamatti Aaltonen’s wraparound attempt.
Team USA took the lead for good at 3:22 of the third period when Paul Stastny (St. Louis, Mo./Colorado Avalanche/Univ. of Denver) fed Smith in the right slot for a one-timer that beat goalie Antti Raanta.
Stephen Gionta (Rochester, N.Y./New Jersey Devils/Boston College) provided a 3-1 cushion for the U.S. at 11:29. Nate Thompson (Anchorage, Alaska/Tampa Bay Lightning) skated the puck up the right side and slid it across the circles to Gionta, who wristed the puck between the Raanta’s legs. Seconds earlier, Gibson stopped a partial breakaway to setup the transition opportunity.
Smith scored into an empty net with :42 left to complete his hat trick and seal the third U.S. win in four games at this year’s world championship.
Team USA has two days off before returning to action on Saturday (May 11) vs. France. Faceoff is 1:15 p.m. local time (5:15 a.m. EDT). NBC Sports Network will televise the game live and also stream it live in the United States through NBC Sports Live Extra.

GLEN FALLS, N.Y. – Niagara hockey goalie Carsen Chubak has signed an American Hockey League contract with the Adirondack Phantoms, the top affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers.

“We are very happy for Carsen and wish him well with his professional endeavors,” head coach Dave Burkholder said.  “The Phantoms are getting a very dedicated and focused individual.”

The Prince Albert, Saskatchewan native led the 2012-13 Purple Eagles to the school’s fourth NCAA Tournament appearance, and first since 2008, and the program’s first Atlantic Hockey regular season title.  Chubak was 23-7-5 with a 1.91 GAA and a .930 save percentage.

Chubak led the league this season in wins, goals-against average and save percentage, while finishing third with 2042:38 minutes played.  His six shutouts also led the conference, and were tied for first in the nation.  His achievements between the pipes earned him AHA Player of the Year honors, as well as a spot as a Top-10 Hobey Baker finalist.  Chubak is only one of three players—Paul Zanette and Joe Tallari—in Purple Eagle history to earn this distinction.

The Phantoms recently concluded their fourth season in the AHL, finished the 2012-13 campaign with an overall record of 31-38-7.

U.S. Men’s National Team Falls to Russia, 5-3, at 2013 IIHF Men’s World Championship Stastny Scores Twice; Bishop Stops 25

0
HELSINKI, Finland – Paul Stastny (St. Louis, Mo./Colorado Avalanche/Univ. of Denver) scored twice andBen Bishop (Denver, Colo./Tampa Bay Lightning/Univ. of Maine) made 25 saves, but defending world champion Russia broke a 3-3 tie with two goals in the final 6:30 on the way to a 5-3 victory over the U.S. Men’s National Team here tonight in preliminary-round action at the 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation Men’s World Championship.
“We played hard,” said Joe Sacco, head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team. “It was a good hockey game and while we didn’t get the desired result, I’m proud of our effort. We’ll get some rest tonight and be ready for an important game against Finland tomorrow.”

Russia opened the scoring at 5:23 during a delayed penalty call to the U.S.

After Craig Smith (Madison, Wis./Nashville Predators/Univ. of Wisconsin) drove to the net, Stastny hammered the second rebound up and over Russian netminder Ilya Bryzgalov at 10:58 to even the game at 1-1. Stastny struck again 2:30 later, this time on the power play. Taking a feed from Justin Faulk (South St. Paul, Minn./Carolina Hurricanes/Univ. of Minnesota Duluth), Stastny walked down from the left faceoff circle and ripped a wrist shot high into the net.

The teams went to the dressing room tied after 20 minutes thanks to Ilya Kovalchuk’s goal at 14:04.

Each team scored once in the second stanza. Carrying momentum from a power play, the U.S. took a 3-2 lead at 7:09. Aaron Palushaj (Livonia, Mich./Colorado Avalanche/Univ. of Michigan) carried the puck up the side boards and slid a pass to Matt Hunwick (Warren, Mich./Colorado Avalanche/Univ. of Michigan) at the point. Hunwick’s blast deflected off a Russian defender before finding the back of the net. Russia’s Alexei Tereshenko scored the equalizer at 11:19.
The third period saw much of the back and forth play that dominated the first two periods, with both teams having quality scoring chances. Russia took the lead for good at 13:35 off a rebound and less than two minutes later, Alexander Radulov took a nice feed from Kovalchuk on the power play to account for the 5-3 final.
The U.S. pulled Bishop in favor of an extra attack for the final 2:13, but could get no closer.

Syracuse Stampede win 2012-2013 NSHL Cup

0
The championship game of the playoffs for the Northern States Junior Hockey League proved to be just as tight and action packed as the regular season.
The Syracuse Stampede beat the Lake George Fighting Spirit 5-4 to win the league’s “NSHL Cup” finals.  Syracuse’s Viktor Lundgren scored with 4:41 remaining in the 3rd period to break a 4-4 tie, proving to be the difference in an action packed final contest.
The Stampede broke the game open early with two goals in the first 5 minutes of the game.  Syracuse Captain Kyle Williams opened up the scoring with a point shot that found its way to the back of the net.  Josh Sova and Alex Foster added the helpers on the goal.  Just minutes later, Mike Iselmoe crashed the net on a shot by Rick Runyon, slipping the puck between the legs of Fighting Spirit netminder Nate DelGiudice. The Fighting Spirit got back on track and sustained pressure in the Stampede end towards the end of the first period, resulting in a power play for the efforts.  On the ensuing power play, Lake George Assistant Captain Henrik Linden ripped a loose puck through a pair of screens, beating Syracuse goalie Trace Pennock with just 1 second left on the clock.
In the 2nd period, both teams exchanged scoring opportunities early on, however neither team was able to capitalize on their chances.  It wasn’t until midway through the second, on another Lake George power play, Henrik Linden buried his 2nd goal of the game on a point shot passed by Mitch Purdie, tying the game 2-2.  Exactly one minute later, Syracuse regained the lead on a power play goal of their own.  Brandyn Morgan tapped home an Alex Huizenga pass, putting the Stampede back on top by a score of 3-2. Dalton Moore added the other assist on Morgan’s power play goal. After 40 minutes of play, the score was 3-2 in favor of the Stampede.
The 3rd period was an exhilarating display of what hockey is all about.  The two teams battled for every puck, leaving everything they had on the ice.  Both teams came out on fire, trying to get the pivotal next goal.  On a Lake George dump in, Stampede goaltender Trace Pennock played the puck to Nicklas Pettersson, who looked up ice and hit a streaking Alex Foster for a breakaway pass.  Foster released a quick snap shot in the upper corner, giving the Stampede a 4-2 lead. However, the Fighting Spirit responded passionately to the Stampede’s 4th goal.  Rather than folding, the young men from Lake George took their play to another level.  They regained the momentum with their hard work, showing their never quit demeanor. Blake Tarbell cut the Stampede lead to 1 after he made the Stampede pay for a defensive zone turnover, releasing a quick snap shot into the back of the net.  Lake George continued to battle carrying the momentum through the middle of the 3rd period.  Off a faceoff in the Stampede zone, Fighting Spirit Captain Tyler Simmons won the draw to a streaking Mike Gough, evening the score 4-4 with 6:19 left in the third.
Just as they had done all game long, the Stampede found an answer to the Lake George comeback.  With just under 5 minutes remaining in the 3rd period the Stampede found their spark, sustaining pressure in the Lake George zone. Syracuse defenseman Dalton Moore took advantage of the tired opposition, controlling a loose puck and shooting it to the net.  In the right place at the right time, Stampede veteran Viktor Lundgren put home a rebound, placing it just under the bar, in what proved to be the game winning goal.
The hard fought battle between the top two teams in the NSHL ended with the Syracuse Stampede edging out the Lake George Fighting Spirit 5-4, making the Syracuse Stampede the 2012-2013 NSHL Cup Champions. Syracuse forward Jon Lauer was awarded playoff MVP.

Team USA Defeats Austria At Men’s Worlds

0

HELSINKI, Finland – Erik Johnson (Bloomington, Minn./Colorado Avalanche/Univ. of Minnesota) scored twice to lead the U.S. Men’s National Team to a 5-3 win vs. Austria today at the 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation Men’s World Championship at Hartwall Arena. Team USA (1-0-0-0, W-OTW-OTL-L) trailed by two goals early on but used a four-goal second period to seize control of the game.

“We got off to a tough start but rebounded well,” said Joe Sacco, head coach of the 2013 U.S. Men’s National Team. “Overall, I thought both teams played a pretty good first game. It’s obviously nice to get that first win under our belt and we’ll spend tonight looking at how we can be better against Latvia tomorrow night.”

Austria jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals at 4:58 and 5:38 of the opening period.

Team USA halved its deficit thanks to a power-play goal by David Moss (Livonia, Mich./Phoenix Coyotes/Univ. of Michigan) at 10:02. Moss tucked in the rebound off a point shot by Justin Faulk (South St. Paul, Minn./Carolina Hurricanes/Univ. of Minnesota Duluth).

Just over a minute into the second period, goaltender Ben Bishop (Denver, Colo./Tampa Bay Lightning/Univ. of Maine) made a save on Thomas Vanek’s breakaway attempt to keep the Austrian lead at 2-1.

“That was a turning point in the game,” said Sacco. “If he doesn’t make that save we’re down by a couple of goals and it’s a tougher hole to get out of.”

Two minutes later, Johnson knotted the game at 2-2 with a one-timer from the center point. Nick Bjugstad (Minneapolis, Minn./Florida Panthers/Univ. of Minnesota) provided the primary feed after holding the puck in at the blue line.

Tim Stapleton (La Grange, Ill./Dynamo Minsk/Univ. of Minnesota Duluth) put the U.S. ahead for good at 9:31. Team USA cycled the puck along the right side and created a wide-open rebound opportunity that Stapleton buried from the low slot.

The U.S. capitalized on a three-on-two rush at 10:57, expanding its lead to 4-2. Aaron Palushaj (Livonia, Mich./Colorado Avalanche/Univ. of Michigan) snapped a low shot into the net following a cross-ice pass by Danny Kristo (Eden Prairie, Minn./Hamilton Bulldogs/Univ. of North Dakota).

Team USA’s four-goal run was stopped at 13:21 when Austria converted on a breakaway chance.

Johnson reestablished the two-goal lead on USA’s second power-play goal of the day.Jamie McBain (Edina, Minn./Carolina Hurricanes/Univ. of Wisconsin) faked a shot and fed Johnson in the left circle for a one-time blast.

Team USA’s defense limited Austria to two shots on goal in the third period to seal the victory.

Bishop made 18 saves to collect his first career win for Team USA. Austria’s Bernhard Starkbaum stopped 24 shots.

USA Hockey Honored

0
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Hockey has been named the recipient of the 2013 Amazing Leader Award by the United States Olympic Committee, it was announced today. The Amazing Leader Award recognizes an individual or organization whose leadership in the Paralympic Movement has been transformative and who has mobilized and unified athletes, programs and organizations that improve the lives of people with physical and visual disabilities.
“We’re honored to be recognized by U.S. Paralympics with the Amazing Leader Award,” said Dave Ogrean, executive director of USA Hockey. “We’re an inclusive organization that works extremely hard to support both able-bodied and disabled athletes and this award is really a reflection of the thousands of volunteers across the country that champion those efforts.”
As the national governing body for both able-bodied and sled hockey, USA Hockey has been recognized for building a grassroots program that feeds into a successful high-performance pipeline. USA Hockey’s initiatives include an equipment lending program and the Sled Hockey Grant Program, which helps ease the initial financial burden of a new sled hockey program by providing five new sleds to a participating program. Additionally, USA Hockey has implemented player development camps that can identify athletes for the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team that has excelled on the international level, capturing the 2010 Paralympic gold medal and two of the last three International Paralympic Committee World Championships.
“The 2013 winners of our Paralympic Amazing Awards are delivering in the areas of grassroots development, elite high performance, sponsorship and philanthropy and telling the Paralympic story,” said USOC Chief of Paralympics Charlie Huebner. “Their success is making a significant impact on the delivery of high quality programming to persons with physical disabilities throughout the United States.”
The Amazing Leader Award will be presented to USA Hockey which during the USOC Paralympic Leadership Conference April 26-28 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
